It was, indeed. I remember when I first watched it. At home in Dallas, TX. I was about 4. My dad and I stayed up late, and sat in front of out B/W TV and watched it. I was a bit unnerved afterwards. Another one we watched that gave me nightmares was "Jason and the Argonauts." The giant Talos was especially creepy.
The movie as a whole is standard B-Grade 50s Science Fiction, the only reason to see it is because of Ray Harryhausen's Special effects
