I've been looking to get the ARTWORK, near the front pages of this yearbook, for years... but I'm trying not to have to BUY a 1979 Yankees yearbook from e-Bay. Specifically, I want the drawing of Graig Nettles in multiple fielding poses at the :28 second mark of this clip. Does anybody with a '79 Yankee yearbook mind scanning that image and e-mailing it to me? I'd appreciate it. I'll check back here for responses.
The first theme was the ending scene from Star Wars the same year(1977) that the Yanks won the series ...Vaders theme came out in 1980 when The Empire Strikes Back came out
I was in the Color guard for games 3 and 5 Got to meet Yogi and a few others Very cool. During the Star Spangled Banner my hat blew off at the beginning of game 5
Anyone read "The Bronx Zoo"? What an incredible whiner Sparky Lyle is!!! He could have been the first great set-up man in major league history .... but instead he choose to pout and cry because the got Gossage to close. The set up role was wide open for him but he sounded like a total baby ("I'm not a long man".... I can't pitch well unless the game is on the line" .. I ain't pitching - I'm going home!")
Wouldn't you be mad if you had won the Cy Young award the year before and was the most dominant closer in the game the year before and then you had to take a back seat the following year. The Yankees never pitched him in 78' even when Goose was getting lit up in the beginning. Lyle was not a whiner, he was a great pitcher who didn't deserve to get tossed aside the way he was. of course Goose was great, he made the HOF, but Sparky had a legitimate beef.
reggie got it done n the big spot and they would never have made it to the 77 series if it was not for sparky lyles great relief work 9 inning ptched gave up 1 run
The reason why there is so many Yankee hater's is because they were either not born or old enough to have a real appreciative respect and concept of the intense history of this team. It is impossible describe something 30 years ago in 1977 when I first followed them or before my time some 60 years ago when people saw the team 10,20,30... times better than even 1977,1996 or even 1998.
I can't speak for other baseball fans, but I DO appreciate the Yankees history. I'm a Red Sox fan, and I don't hate to see the Yankees winning because of the players. I appreciate the talent of the players. I don't like seeing them win because the fans (though certainly not ALL the Yankee fans) come across as the worst winners in the history of sprots fandom. True, the fans of other teams aren't perfect, but they're not as bad as those of the Yankees.
worst winners? might want to check redsuk fans, before "04 and "07 i was never really sure how the average redsuk fan was, well let me tell you they are by far the worse! They are not even happy when they win! Also the least knowledgible fans i've ever seen period!
@hop2171 def agree with you there; I rarely ever saw anyone wearing sox stuff until 04, or phillies stuff until 08. Now people suddenly LOVE them. "B" is for BANDWAGON.
Might I add, I didn't really start to pay attention to the game until 08, but I've been a fan my whole life. I wish I could've been around in the 70s to see these awesome games.
"Canadian925", that has not been my experience at all. The biggest Yankee haters That I've encountered are those older fans who experienced the 1950s. It seems like those (non-New Yorkers) old enough to have seen them dominate in the unprecedented way they did that decade, hates them with a passion. (Not that I can really blame them, I mean can you imagine having been a Red Sox fan during those years? Shoot, I'm a Tigers fan who wasn't even born then, and I hate even thinking about it!) ; )
WOW!! I had to pull out the '79 YB which features the '78 team.Remember,Tiant and John were not not on the team. They would arrive for the '79 season.I remember that season vividly. Not only did they fight among themselves,as is detailed in Sparky Lyle's "The Bronx Zoo",but they overcame injuries to key personnel, and in each and every playoff series, came from behind.Memorable season indeed!
I suppose the Star Wars music is right for the time.
Although I'm one of those who doesn't care for the Yankees, this is the era of baseball I remember fondly. I still like Bucky Dent, and the veteran Roy White.
My favourite moment of the 1978 World Series? Gotta be in game two when young rookie reliever Bob Welch came out in the ninth inning and struck out that big bully.
Don't forget the Yank's lost Randolph for the '78 series,so an unknown by the name of Brian Doyle came out of nowhere, and between he and Bucky, the came from 0-2,to sweep past the Dodgers in 6.If only we could turn back the hands of time.
I remember that the Yankees winning percentage in 1977 and 1978 were very high in August and September. Although there were few superstars on the 1978 team as they have today, the 1978 team were great at clutch hitting and making great catches when most needed it. When they needed that hit the most, they would really do their best at getting it. They also had something called team spirit which seems to be missing today. I miss this team.
The Defining moment of Yankee Baseball in the 1970's, and is some ways of the entire Steinbrenner era, was Chambliss' walk-off home in the 1976 ALCS off Mark Littel. That is the most dramatic moment in Yankees Stadium History.
Let's hope we get another this year. Boston looks awfully tough. It's hard to kae the playoffs every year, let alone win the division. I cannot imagine the yanks without Torre as manager.
Awesome video! I was 9 in '78, and still remember everything about that season. I'd love to see the standings that year, when Boston held a 14 1/2 game lead on the Yanks in mid-July. Then everything fell apart for the Bosox, including that Boston Massacre. I have that yearbook somewhere in my basement - Thanks for making me relive it.
I was 8 and missed the whole summer because my mother took me to S.America. Still haven't forgiven her for that, but I did make it back for the one game playoff, and the rest of the run.
luis tiant played for the red sox in 1978???
