alfa 156 is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. it's an original alfa that combines sport legacy with modern luxury. BUT...archeiluxury is right about selespeed. it's the worst transmission system no matter how you drive-true story.-
You´re a completely morron, to drive an Alfa as requirement you´ll need a stunning nails kit, you think that a selessped has a similar behaviour as a regular gearbox you´re wrong. I am pleased that you dumped your Alfa, you simply don´t deserve it.
you might all talk about the selespeed problems. but the short story is. selespeed was not good when it got out. alfa had factory taken back the car to change it. that DID NOT happen in australia though. secondly most of you and DO NOT LIE are normal dirvers changing gears at about 2000 to 2500 rpm. my friend had constant problems with selespeed untill i told him what i do with mine. instead of changing at low revs i rev it up to 3 to 3.5 thousand RPM. since then no problem has occured.
@strasharo it doesnt change that much. i cant talk about mine cause i have a costum exhaust pipe modified ecu modified air intake ect. so i can only do 400 k's but from 2.5 grand to 3 grand it wont make that much of a diffirence. and if you are worried just shift to 3 grand in first and second gear. but it does make it better. i have to say i drive it like mad so i tend to change at redline or at 5 grand and it still goes liek stink
indeed alfas are beutifull but just that nothing more...they are all problematic and no reliable.i own a hyundai accent 2008 and one day i went to the local alfa dealer and he was laughing about my car.now i am gonna show him that video about alfa 156...thanks mate and stay away from italian cars
these 156's are are absolute money pits my dad bought one a few years ago and the same as u, the nightmares began. we replaced the gearbox twice and it broke the third time in the middle of a busy road... long story short it's been sitting in the garage ever since.
Just wanna add another thing: I've owned 3 Alfas in my life (classic model 1980 Giulietta 2.0, a beauty and the other a mediocre Alfa 33). Both reliable and never a days problem with either of them. That being said, this experience with the 156 has been a dealbreaker for me, a real passion killer. I will never buy Alfa again. Maybe I'm emotional because of this experience but that's how I feel at the moment.
Exactly the same story as yours Archie. Mine has been taken away on the back of a truck more times than I care to remember due to the Selespeed. One problem after the other, actuator, hydraulic pump and now it seems ( a week ago) the gearbox. I'm waiting for the final verdict (second opinion). Depending on the outcome, I'm selling this car as scrap. It's just financially unwise to spend another dime on this junk, it's really not worth the money or the stress. Lesson learned. Alfa get fukd!
i am sorry for your problem, but i have 156 2003 selespeed i am first owner, almost 8 years it is in my property,180000km,regulary serviced no problems with selespeed,it is exelent car that is my opinion,...just for a teep, few days ago i buy new alfa QIULIETTA 1.4 TB 170HP MULTIAIR!
Mate problem is alfas are KNOWN to have lots of problems. but you buy it if you dont care if your a sort of person who doesnt care about them. problem is it costs alot
Yes I experienced same problem what you have told us so far. After purchasing my alfa 156 after a month the gear wouldnt change so had towed to euro car specialist Zegames in Melbourne after a weeks they started working on then they have found more problems with it.And they said to me actuator cost me 2368 and clutch kit 1069 and labor work end up $5180. Now after about 7weeks im getting the car back this week. Lets hope i wont experience same problem:(
One other thing, I bought the software to calibrate the Selespeed myself, and I did take the actuator apart just for the fun of it. I agree that manual transmission is a better choice if you'd rather not be on intimate terms with the Selespeed ;-)
I found this video quite chilling, quite sad, quite funny, and very interesting... thank you for taking the time to make it.
I have a 2003 156 Selespeed which I bought last year with 234000km on the clock. The car is from Singapore and is the 'second series' type. I decided to replace most of the suspension, the brakes, and the clutch as a precaution, and I also modified the engine to minimise the oil consumption (I reduced it from 1L/600km to less than half a litre in 4000km).
... well, luckily I have done all this work myself, plus the modification of the suspension with springs from Germany and shocks from England. Anyway, since then I have enjoyed a year of trouble-free driving (12,000km)... :-) It's quite a lot cheaper than a Corolla, too... -Alex
@Iam18yearsolddddd man its nice to drive very laxury car and rare u seen it on the road but if i was u wouldnt u will end cost u alot like me and this video talking
@leon6266 HI! I bought the car already, parts are relatively cheap here in Bosnia and the engine is 1.9 jtd 105 hp. I have done few things in my garage to save me some money like cleaning the EGR, MAP, MAF, intercooler and pipes and the intake manifold which was very dirty. I would recommend the diesel version because I talked to some alfa romeo owners and they say that 2.0 TS has problems with rod bearings. I'm planning to chip tune it, should give 131 hp.
Before buying any car , you must go online to get reviews , that can shed some light and you can get an idea of what you will face , was thinking of Alfa Alfa Alfa.
PS Alfa parts are cheap, the labor is expensive, here in romania i changed everything from my suspension bushings, arms, made the oil change & filters + changed the timing belt and so one..and the bill was...wait for it....aprox 800 euros...so how the F*** do they charge you >5000 dolars ???in your countrys.
i have to agree the salespeed are broblematic,i have a 2001 156 jtd manual from new....i have now with the car 238.000 km...and no problems so far......
Alfa Romeo 156 is a great car. It looks excelent inside and out, it is practical, it performs extremly good and is cheap. I am telling you that because I have one, a Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 with a proper manual gearbox. But please do not buy the Selepeed because everyone knows that is rubish .
the selespeed ones are problematic, the manul dieser or petrol are very ok and are good in reliability.there are some versions of selespeed that have some problems,i don't know witch are thow.
To tell the truth my friend (all my cars was italians and alfas) and all of them has not a true reliability i tell you 1000% i feel you .i make my cross with my fiat coupe.I have the same car with you now..in the 7:10 you say ..has a trick you stop the car and is ok if stuck in the speed ,you restart the engine
ll due to a lack of knowledge. the actuator is a very expensive part, but the reality is, its usually a seal or o ring in the actuator that fails, and someone who knows the cars properly (sadly not a lot of dealers) can rebuild the actuators for very minimal cost. avoid dealers and go to the independent experts.
i have the exact same problem with my 02 JTS! receive the bill today it will cost me $5300 to replace the actuator 2nd hand $2570! i only had the car 14 months i replaced timing belt $1800 and cat converter cost me $2900AUD just 3 months ago. i regret buying this car but its a nice car though. its the same thing with the lp640 with e gear! I should have stayed with audi it is more reliable. im thinking of just trading this car for a push bike!
My opinion is if you buy one choose a manual transmission. I have not heard of any problems with manual 156 twin sparks.
I drive a 2000 156 TS Manual and is a stunning car to drive.
My mum drives a 2002 Selespeed and has had the actuator replaced at 40,000 k's. This is also the facelifted model so you would think changes were made to the reliability of the transmission.
As far as i'm concern its the selespeed transmission itself which can be quite costly with it's terrible reliability.
Not just the Alfa's Selespeed robotised transmission has a lot of failures, the same situation with the similar components and absolute does not matter that car is an Alfa or a BMW, maybe a Smart.
It's not just the same of the Alfas
The worst parts of the nowdays cars are the electronic devices ! If you don't know anything about robotised transmission, the service guys sucks every Pounds from you
heh, i own a 156 1.8 , gladly its mechanic..... but it keeps giving me problems ........... and i cant sell it, couse peaple are affraid of the car.. as my friend sayd- alfa romeo is a beutiful girl, but its a expensive and higly demanding slut..
I've had the same problems but much worse.. You don't buy an Alfa for it's reliablilty - you buy it for the passion (on both sides). I bought mine for $9K when they were worth $16K and replaced actuators, cam belt, rev sensor (Main problem for all my faults and was worth $100.00). Have spent a further 4.5K on it and it is a superb machine to drive... even though I am living in a cardboard box (Not really but I can see the box on the horizon if I try to feed the passion for too much longer!!
ok cars do break down but this is not the reason to pray to Jesus and being so miserable
