  • i like how they censored it

  • @maidensnowflake i give you a word you give me a paragraph. #winning

  • @nitsnshit

I give you two sentences, you think it's a paragraph. #educated.

  • @maidensnowflake i actually invented paragraphs. #winning

  • @nitsnshit

Heh. Sad, that's the best you came up with. Oh look, another paragraph. Uh, not anymore, it's more than 2 sentences. Internet children are not worth my time :)

  • @maidensnowflake wouldn't it be awesome if i raped your mom? ohh god i would love to rape your mom.

  • By the way, this video still sucks even 2 years later. And it's not even just the censoring this time, these people cannot even sing it correctly, with the right pitch, tone, or timing.

  • This is so clever! Love it!

  • harmonies are good.

  • That was so clever the way you censored it well done

  • I think it's cool that they did that for the one word. If you think about the other meaning, it kinda makes a point about how the adults were censoring them from that whole topic. That's just what occured to me.

  • um......seriously, it's like A Very Potter Musical just less epic and on crack!

  • it's kind of funny...but the point of the song is kind of lost..you know?

  • Hi! My name is Alex Oyen and I directed this piece and I'm the one with the guitar. I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who has watched this video. We did this in our sophomore year of high school and I haven't watched it since. I am so surprised/proud to see that it's received over 50,000 views. We've all headed off to college now, and I am feeling so nostalgic watching it. So, whether you loved it or you hated it- here's to the pursuit of trying. Thank you guys :)

  • ...This is the worst video I've ever seen... but it's so insanely amusing.

  • you can say dhit but not fucked?? :S!!! its only a word say it!! :) lol

  • Hey that's me!

  • That was quite good... apart from the fact the word fucked wasn't in it..

  • wow ur a really good singer (kid with guitar) haha :D

  • i know that theatre. :) us florida state thespians are the best kind of thespians. <333

  • anyone know the tabs to the song? can't see them clearly and can't find them on the net either..

  • despertar de primavera ♥

  • haha great job! nice censorship!

  • the kid with the guitar sorta sounds like Zac Efron

  • very creative!

  • this is sooo cool!

  • awweeeeee Dr. Phillips will forever = amazing

  • A High School.. WOW

  • very good

  • haha!! you guys did a great job with that. i dont know if my school could ever pull this off. our thes-fest is coming up. sure wish we could have planned something like this!

  • Very wel done. Although I have never understood the fine line of censorship that'll allow you to say "shit" but not "fuck."

  • loveed the drumsticks

  • I thouroughly enjoyed this!! And I NEVER like high schools doing things from shows, especially Spring Awakening!! Bravo.

  • This actually seems like a way the production would put it on. I saw the tour and the stomping was very much part of the show.

Very creative way to do it.

  • and also i still got chills at the second blah blah blahs (:

  • this is soo creative and amazing great job!!!

  • Very very ceative, i wanted to do this but i didnt think of a way we could get out of the cussing bc the judges deduct points of obsessive cussing

  • thats my district! i was there for this...and at districts...one of the girls got so into it @ districts that she broke her stick!

  • seeing spring awakening on tour, i actually like this for a high school! sure i dont get the point of being able to say shit and not fuck, but w/e, the vocals and performance were definately there...just not all the words

  • omg i was there, i loved that performance, district 5 baby

  • I wish my school would do something from Spring Awakening, but they wouldn't even consider it.

This was so creative and original...I loved it!

  • Wait, you're allowed to perform "Totally Fucked" in high school?

Oh, they took out the fucks. But isn't that pretty much half the song and mostly the chorus?

(And saying shit is okay? Weirdness.)

  • you have to admit.... the reality is high schools cant do everything, but their creativity was smash ON and it did not bother me one bit. Every percussive beat..... and your mind FILLED IN THE FUCKS.

  • Yeah, even without the fucks it was pretty balls-y. I'm totally there with you. My school wouldn't even consider singing "The Song Of Purple Summer," which is the most PG-rated song.

  • as long as it has it has an asterisk, you can say all the shits, and damns you want.

but i agree maybe saying fuck would be pushing the asterisk rule...

  • This was the BEST performance at Opening!!!!! It was waaaaaaay better live. The drumsticks were amazing. And it was funny when he didn't say the whole word. you didnt expect it. Florida State Thespians RULE!!!!!

  • Thank you Floridians! What a creative way to teach CURRENT and Relevant theater to our kids. I just want to thank you for the courage and after seeing the original cast twice in NYC, I loved your video!!!!!!!

  • can I just say, when you say current theatre.... Spring Awakening was written in 1891...

yes this is the musical, but it is virtually the same just with music...

BTW I love spring awakening it was fantastic when I saw it in London!!

  • But not the musical version.

  • by "Current" I meant it is from a very very recent Broadway Season....not like most high schools who do stuff only from 1955, or 1965, or 1975..... flash forward to only two seasons ago..... THAT IS CURRENT BROADWAY.... and not many high schools are doing that.

  • It was a lot better in person but the acoustics of the drumsticks and the video camera's sound quality make a bad video but it was really good in person of course its better to hear the actual lyrics but it was the best they could've done for the song.

  • Why even do a song that has to be censored? The drumsticks are a really cheesy distraction and they take away the power of the teenage angst the characters in Spring Awakening are trying to express.

  • if you think about this, it actually is good. i mean the concept of it is great. the performance was good. and the singing obvs is good. idk why some ppl dont like it. i tohught it was good.

  • the drumsticks ruined it

  • they can say shit but not fuck...? :[?

  • and kiss your sorry ass goodbye

  • nice concept, bad product

  • This was an amazing concept. I think it would have been more effective if the drum sticks had only been used in place of the "F" word. Sometimes, less is more. Still an awesome concept and the voices were outstanding!

  • haha so they could say every other swear but fuck, i actually liked how they did, but omg the fucking hitting the drum sticks together was osoooooo annoying and sometimes it was sooo off beat it sounded awful, this would of been awesome if u guys just left the drum sticks out and omg 1:35 was amazing he saangg that note

  • considering not being able to say the word you guys did awesome. and the drum sticks where really creative. good job!!!!

  • OMG!!!! They got censored this year when performing La Vie Boheme and I was pissed!!! But the way they performed it was amazing.

  • is that alex playing the guitar?

  • Who cares if it's censored? Of course it's censored, it's a youth conference (not that I agree with censorship, but I'm sure it's inappropriate to perform this in front of an entire young audience without prior warning.) I think they did an awesome job, actually, and it must have been really fun to perform.

  • I think you guys shoulda have done it with the word anyway for real...once you started it they wouldnt have stopped you...i mean isnt that what the show is about? Not conforming to offend people?

  • WE ARE DISTRICT ON!!! BAHAHA!

im with sjcca we one 5 critics choices this year

    =]

  • lol the comments on this thing are amazing:)

can i just clear a few things up?

i was in this piece, fourth girl from the left, red belt.

we really wanted to say the word, believe me, we were just as angry that we couldn't. we were all ready for districts, ready to say the word, when about a week before we went to compete, our director ordered us to take the word out. we didn't want to offend anyone, especially any particularly conservative judges...

if we had it our way, we wouldve said fuck :)

  • So what they didnt say Fuck. This was my favorite act on opening night! Definately deserves what they got...Critics choice! Im assuming you all got superiors at state as well!?

I proudly represented for the last time District 12 Troupe 5445.

    Florida Thespians are best!

  • You can't do the song without the word.

  • Sorry guys ....

    but really scottZamborski ur right

    Why?

  • This is a really good variation of the song. You guys did an amazing job! Don't worry about the idiots who are being rude because if they had any brains at all they would realize that you are a little young to be screaming obscenities, and that your parents might not be happy with that. Anyway you all did a fantastic job with this wonderful song.

  • They're fucking high school students. If you're not shouting obscenities by the time you're in high school, then you need to die. Besides, this song loses all meaning without the word fuck. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!!!!!

  • For your information asshole, they had to censor the word because it was a showcase (PG-rated to not offend the families) of the best of the best from each district in Florida and they happened to be the best of the best in their district.

  • I agree with you and the others who appreciated the great talent to get that song performed for HIGH schoolers. I loved it, it was everything and I am one who usually doesnt like censorship of art.

  • I love you guys!! Alex, Dodge, ect. We are going to kick butt again at State!

    && We proudly represent...

    Troupe 4276!

  • When I saw the link to this video, I was like "no way!"

Then I opened the link and realized that this was from the Florida State Thespian Festival! I was there when you guys did this song. I was one of the thousands of people cheering for you guys. Amazing job and keep it up!

We should have a get together at State this year. Say, my troupe and your troupe?

    - Julio Chavez, West Port High - Troupe 6180

  • If you can't say or sing the word then don't do the song.

  • Totally agree.

  • why

  • haha i was there... nice

  • thats really cool! where did you find the cello part???????

  • sorry, but don't perform the song if you cannot say "fuck"...even if you wanted to and it was the schools fault...you have to have enough respect for the song to not perform with censorship...and if you can say shit, then you should be able to say fuck.

  • Just wanted to point out that the Broadway cast also censored the small portion of this song that was in the medley that they did for the Tony Awards.

  • did they actually censor it or did the Tony Awards mute it out?

  • I am pretty sure they just didn't say the words.

  • that is disappointing...even if they did use the actual lyrics, the station would have bleeped them out. there should be no reason why they should have to change the song; i don't even think children watch the Tony awards :P

  • @shadylane1321 They actually made fun of it. They cover their mouths every time the word 'fuck' would've been used.

  • @shadylane1321 and they changed it from fked to stuck in other TV show

  • @shadylane1321 they said "suck"

  • @shadylane1321 They covered their mouths and didnt say the words. And in another performance on the Good Morning show they said "Stuck" and "life" instead of ass.

  • @shadylane1321 They either leave out "fucked" or say "totally stuck."

  • this wasnt for the tony awards, it was a school thing.

  • you need to read the previous conversations...i know very well this was not for the Tony awards...

  • They did. Watch the video they all covered their mouths when the word was about to be said.

  • yes i know that now, i watched it to confirm myself.

  • @maidensnowflake no, they actually censored it, similarly to this.

  • Oh, give it a rest.

  • Hey, I was done with it once I found out about the Tony thing. Now YOU give it a rest.

  • I made one comment.

You overeacted in the first place.

  • Yea, you probably think my comment was unnecessary and I think the same about yours.

  • @maidensnowflake The deal with the censorship is that the judges disapprove of the language. This is a performance competition and the judges have to give you a good rating in order to move on to the next level. It's not the school's fault, it's the judges fault. You don't HAVE to censor your performance, but if one word was standing in the way of a Best Overall rating, which is what they got for this performance, then I would leave it out. I was at this festival and I thought it was fantastic!

  • I <3 FL Thespians :)

Troupe 6620 is amazing(they're from my school)

  • Ahhh goosebumps..

District 5 is waaay amazing. :D

  • although I was on an opposing troupe, this was awesome :3 very very creative. Props to whoever came up to this.

  • this song was kick-ass live!! i wish my troupe could do the, but shockingly, we're just not that big enough (plus its a catholic school, go figure :(

BUT it was marvelous! you guys definitely represented!

  • hey i am going to the Jr. Florida thespians on friday and saturday. I am gona perform on saturday :D

  • Perfect censorship!

  • HOLY SHIZ! that was awesome!..lol

  • FL THESPIANS REPRESENT! It was even better live, guys!

  • it was good but could have been better

  • defenatly agree i understand y they couldn't say fuck but w/ out it the song isn't the same n the sing was pretty good but some of it was spoken n not really sung

  • I'm really not suprised by the talent that is here. State Festival was and has been the best times of my life, and nothing can take that away. You guys did fantastic DP.

All of you! that was great... I can't wait until I can chaperon State Festival!

  • does anyone know the guitar chords for this song.

  • im friends with EVERYONE in this tehe

  • If your going to do a play or a musical with swearing in you may as well just do it theres no point censoring...

  • i was totally in the front row and it was AMAZING!!! I'm from District 12 troupe 5031, our boys did the song from the Summer of 42.

  • THAT IS AWESOME!!

was that like for a theatre festival or something?? i want my highschool to do this for competition!!

  • Florida State Thespians State Festival. Largest of its kind in the US.

Truly the best time of the year for high school thespians! about 7,000 students take over the city of Tampa, FL for 4-5 days of debauchery and random singing in the streets.

This is the opening ceremony where the top performers in the state are chosen to perform.

  • i ushered here that night:]

  • the singing was really good, and it was great acting, great overall performance, and i know its just a high school thing and youre not allowed to say "the word" but youre allowed to say the other words? I also thought the sticks where a creative way to make a filler for it, but i thought it was kinda dumb in that that kind of use for the drum sticks are the kind of thing i see in my sister in 2nd grade's school plays. nice job altogether though =]

  • This makes me really happy!!

  • This is AMAZING, even with the word left out!

  • that was absolutely amazing...having just seen the show in new york i found this high school to be excellent!

  • the one playing melchior has a splendid voice. well done!!!

  • nicee if i were them i would have said f*cked at the end

  • well we didnt want to disqualify our TROUPE from anything in the actual competition. two of our seniors happened to win best duet acting, and we would have have been disappointed if we had been the ones to make them lose.

  • this was really cool. can i remind all the haters that they did the same thing on the tonys. it didnt take away from the song at all. the energy ws still there. great job!

  • This had to be the worst opening event at state.

  • UGH. It's just a word. If you're gonna do the song, say the fucking word.

  • it's a high school show..

  • pick a different song if you have to censor it

  • this is cool! fucking amazing.

  • Oh hey, I remember that.

  • GAH THE HARMONY AT 1:35!!!!

  • amazing! i got chills from the thrill. XD keep up the good work!

  • I remember seeing this.

I think it was just okay.

    No offense...

  • I liked how you censored it, it's original. My highschool wouldn't even dream of doing this song!

  • Go ahead! If your going to sing this song, then stop the annoying rythem sticks and go ahead and say it....Fuck! Fuck, fuckity, fuck fuck, fuck!

  • Damn straight!

  • i think it had something 2 do with schools, so they probably werent allowed. but u still get the idea without saying fuck.

  • It was because of the severity of the word....

  • That was awesome. I remember watching it and going, "OMG YOU GUYS SPRING AWAKENING!"

  • That wuz Amazing. That was the most brilliant performance, with unbelievably fucking good choreography.

  • yea i thought it was kinda odd to how u recorded this. but hey as long as u are a friend of my ensemble members its all good with me.

  • ahh! i remember this... i was sitting waaaaay in the back with my troupe!

    love the lead.

  • I remember this one;

check out my stuff under my favorites.

  • Ha ha. I remember this. I was sitting down near the back on the bottom level with my troupe.

  • its funny how you guys censored it. still sounds great though

  • If I may ask, why did you film this? I mean, I don't mean to be rude, but you're not in our troupe. It was a really nice thing to do :)

  • Well, last year I filmed part of Bat Boy just cause it was really good. Plus, I am friends with Alex and Lily.

  • I'm in the troupe with them...I've known lily for 9 years

  • Oh & in case you don't remember, we were the ones with the long, colorful skirts. :D

    lol.

    We represented District 8, Troupe 4841. <3

PLEASE, let me know if anyone happened to film us at all.

    Thank you!

  • This was a great performance. (:

I was in "All I Owe Ioway."

Do you happen to know if anyone filmed us, by any chance? I had left my camera back at the hotel. /:

  • Thank you so much for taping this. i didnt have my camera with me that day so i couldnt get it. We, troupe 4276, were sitting a few rows down from u from the view of the camera. thank u again!

  • I was in this :)

fourth from the right, browned haired girl.

whoever took this, thanks a lot, there are no quality videos of us...

  • Well, you are welcome. =)

  • yes, thank you for filming us. this is great!

  • I understand that this was school related and had to be censored, but it pretty much defeats the purpose of the song. fascist school systems!

  • AMAZING! Im a thespian from Iowa :)

  • Ahhh, love this.

Very creative way to consensor it.

  • Wow this was actually really freaking amazing.

  • I love this!

  • This, like, restores my faith in people my age. I have never seen high schoolers do anything this excellent XD OH MY GOD THIS IS AWESOME. Those sticks were SUCH a good idea!

  • I was there in the first row!!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this performance!!!

    Troupe 1449!!!

  • I was there. im in troupe 5031. totally loved the perfromance.

  • I was at States and totally loved this performace...and the BarMitzfah Boy of course...You guys are awesome.

  • Goosebumps.

  • Oh my gosh, I was totally there and saw this. They are in my district. DISTRICT FIVE TROUPE 4848 BABY!

This is simply amazing. They did so good. This was probably my favorite critics choice.

  • these are my babies!! love to 2010 and '11..

  • it was very well done. i liked the way you edited. great.

  • that was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah that was pretty awesome!!!! it was great sharing the stage with you guys!!! i'm from district 11 troupe 5476 we did "run, freedom, run". congrats on your superior!!! =D

  • Melchior was super. Just had to comment again. :)

  • Its an awesome idea and you guys did a great job im glad someone posted this cause i didnt get to see opening ceremonies my only notes are rhythm needed to be cleaned up and

Melchior need to have a much louder liberated YES!!! at the end, but other than that it was very cool all great voices and cool ideas.
