Nice - your tone is right on. I play the exact same P bass - vintage 76 - with medium Elixers and the action set like yours. I'm a aggressive pick player though, so I set my EQ with lots of low and med, and 1/3 high.
I can get a similar sound with my 88 Ric with the addition of added bite on each note.

Dude Awesome! I played guitar fora few years and it ended up in the closet for about three years. Then one day I was jammin out to The Lemon Song and the bass line just blew me away! That same day I went out and bought an American jazz bass and have been playing everyday since then! I just regret all the years I could of been playing. What drum machine are you using dude?
@hassanebray Thanks! Good choice getting into the bass. The drums on this recording are some groove loops played in Cakewalk Sonar recording software on my computer. Not very elaborate.
@hassanebray : well the bass is more of a rudimentary instrument. You play single notes and very few guys get too experimental with the bass.. as far as doing weird jimi stuff, the guitar is a much more experimental instrument. You're not gonna find a guy biting his bass strings while playing!!! The two instruments are different and with practice I'm sure you could have been a great guitar player.
Man, I know you're a cool enough cat not to really care about the a-hole comments, but this was sweet as hell, and those talking about 4th fingers can shove it. You are truly a badass.
Hi !! I own a 78 P bass also, but i can't get your tone !! What kind of strings are using on it in this video ? Flatwound or Roundwound ? How did you set the action ? Let me know !!
I always use roundwound personally, (DR Sunbeams currently), but I've heard half-round and flat-wounds give a good Jones like tone. My bass is set to a medium low action. Basically as low as possible for each string, but without any 'fretting out' all the way up the neck. My tone is achieved mostly by using lots of low end, little mid range, and medium hight end if you have an EQ adjustment for your amp or recording gear. Thanks for commenting!
I think your bass is sounding great !! I own a 78 too but is not sounding good as yours. What gauge is your strings in this video 100 or 105 ? i guess i'll try DR Sunbeams too.
you were amazing in this. thank you so much for making an isolated bass vid instead of playing along with the track like most other vids of the bass in this song do.
heavy duty bassing bro! sorry i wasnt up for making a vid with you on this song. i never took the time to learn this one and i had just started a new job.
good to hear from you again. I think this video was posted long before I thought about doing a collab with your drums. Anyway, those collab vids are pretty tricky to produce, but maybe we'll work on one down the road.
nice job man!! i've seen all three videos for this song and you have a really nice playing going on, so can you send me some tabs for this song??? thanx in advance.
yes, I did make a bass vid for the guitar solo section of the song. I could post it since you asked, I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, but its not too bad. Check back in a while and it should be up. Thanks!
Thanks, I plugged directly into my computer. I recently added a SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard, which has some good EQ and recording options. Its not considered a professional recording soundcard, but its pretty good for the price.
ya, sorry it had to be split up due to technical limitations. After your great comment I feel like remaking this song all the way through non-stop. I'll make it just with bass and a drum track once again, but no stops. Thanks!
You're killing me!!!! I'm freezing over here from the chills I'm getting listening to this. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...Never heard someone play this without the backround playing. Great to here just the bass and a drum beat. BUT.....as I'm listening and writing this it stopped prematurely. I NEED MORE! It's like you stopped the buzz I was getting from drinking just as I started.
This is what plays in the background wherever Samuel L. Jackson goes.
