  • I think screen sizes will linger between 3.5 to 4.5", but they may become fold-able or bendable for easier portability. Phones that affix to the wrist is not practical. Watch phones are more likely.

Also phones will become either light powered (like Citizen Eco-Drive) or motion powered, but will still retain some sort of battery.

I'm guessing voice input will become more sophisticated but will never replace touch as the sole input mode. Most likely both options will be available.

  • nice touch. thanks for keeping the show interesting

  • 5g and smaller screens in 3.5 years, I don't think so...

    Nokia and Blackberry disappearing? maybe...

  • @lilacfloyd You mark my words, the screen of a 2015 smartphone will be 4.3" or less. The current trend towards 5" screens is a fad.... IMHO. 8-)

With perfect voice handling, there's less need for visual interfaces for many jobs....

Gaming and movie watching remain, but by then we'll be interfacing to larger screens all round us...

  • @stevelitchfield I have a 4.65" screen, now every other screen seems too small.

4.5" is probably the sweet spot.

You can't interface to larger screens on the move.

Also imagine being on a crowded train and everyone is using voice handling.

  • @lilacfloyd I guess I was hoping that telecommuting would have taken off more by 2015 and that trains were a lot less crowded!!! Hey, it's *my* vision.... 8-)

  • I loved future Steve. Great fun.....

  • @stevelitchfield At the end of show 153 I saw that you were supposed to review the nokia lumia 800 for show 154.... whats up with that? (701 is still good but still...)

  • @persiantube1990 My Lumia 800 got delayed 8-( Ah well, plenty else to look at while I wait. Next up - the HTC Titan!!

  • i loved the look into future segment :) something different.

  • Quite hilarious look into the future. But there is still no solution to long-lasting battery life.

  • Quite hilarious look into the future. But there is still taLk fix to being,

  • Show is awesome keep it up.

As for 2015.... I'm sure that it will quad core but more like 2-4gb of ram.

I don't think screen size will reduce that much unless people are carrying around another device like Ipod Touch/Mini Macbook air/PSP VITA to be able to watch pictures and videos on a big screen realistically. Of course Pico Projectors will probably be hitting some mainstream phones by then but who knows. I say a more futuristic phone might have same size but all touch on the front no bezel.

  • @alphacompton Oh indeed. But Id din't have a real phone from the future, so went with a spliced up dummy from today that I thought was about the right size 8-) And yes, there might be a projection system or a wireless display hookup of some kind for media consumption.

  • Nice too see that Series 60 3rd Edition has made a comeback in 2015! The UI in the phone from the future really looks like that! 8-)

Oh, and a head-to-head review of the Nokia N9 and the Lumia 800 would be very nice. I hope that you can convince Nokia that you need a review sample of each.

  • Steve, how about a Galaxy Note review? I know you mentioned before that it seemed like a pointless device but ...

I brought the Note from Expansys UK. Initially I thought it was a bit "too big" but its fine now. Super slim and very lightweight. Tremendous display. The battery life is also surprisingly good (4 days). Loving the S Pen too, although the little button can be a bit fiddly to use

One thing, whilst you can carry this device in your jeans you will need fairly deep pockets

  • I love large device, it feels substant in your hand, it gives a device a premium feeling, and you don't fear loosing it. I don't understand the obsession with thinness.

  • Hi Steve great show and well made! Are all the Nokia phobics ranting about you in the future having a Nokia? To be honest everyone should expect that, right?

I think that it is rather cool that Nokia is still around in 2015 ;-).

Never having to worry about charging batteries .... What a great idea!

  • @lomsteve OK, two shows on the trot with Symbian - don't worry, no more Symbian planned for months now... 8-) It's just the way the timing of the devices works out....

  • you had me convinced until the maglev part. High-tech trains in the UK? Come on, that's just too unbelievable...

  • Hey Steve, since you're a Nokia fan have you ever considered dedicating the show to just Nokia's?

  • @Leonis1989 I thought this show *was* 8-) Oh, I see, you were being sarcastic...!

Don't worry, I'm hoping to get the HTC Titan in for the next show.

  • @stevelitchfield - No sarcasm intended I like Nokia's. But seeing as how you're main focus are Nokia's paying attention to other devices/information is probably a waste of time.

  • It would be nice to see some new phones instead of Nokia Nokia Nokia you should change your show to Nokia.

  • @Jonthearm Hey come on, before the last two shows, I'd had almost no Nokia for *months*... it's just the way devices turn up etc.

  • Interesting show this time. Ar first, I was like "Is Steve high?" ;-) Good points on extending the battery life (eternal batt life, in your case). I hope this is addressed in a year or two. It's kind of irritating to stop playing with your phone to charge. I think, though, that most phone screens won't shrink to less than 4" or 3" (pushing it already) as this would compromise gaming experience on phones - a sure constant in the years to come IMHO.

  • If someone had told me last week that the respected and informative Steve Litchfield would make a total knob of himself by pretending to be from the future, velcroing a smartphone his arm and attempting a some bizarre comedy routine I would have said - not in a million years. Just like you Steve I could not predict the future either - and with that in mind never EVER do the 'future' thing again!!!

  • @redshovel Ah well... there's my future as a stand-up comedian gone down the tubes....

  • @stevelitchfield I for one enjoyed the future bit very much!, Please don't feel discouraged.

  • Steve, I need a Litchfield review on the N9. I'd ship you mine if there wasn't and ocean between us. I don't know anyone in this country that's even heard of the N9. Should I sell or wait it out..... Cause the N8's update didn't come till long after I sold it. Didn't regret that one bit, text input was abysmal rendering that device useless in my hands at least.

  • I'm sorry Steve, but you could have done a Galaxy note review in the time you wasted going to the future!

  • apple will lose their dominance by then.

  • Nice show Steve, re-the web browser on the 701 "text reflow" is it a different browser to Anna ? If so I really look forward to it as it's sadly missing on my E7. Also the future looks a little data intensive if we are going too far into the clouds and the voice recognition thing, I suspect and hope you're wrong about that !! Cheers :)

  • @stephenquin58 Yes, the Belle browser's newer, but 'text reflow' is still far more basic than the latest Android browser. Don't get your hopes up too high.

  • That is the CRAZIEST Phones Show ever! It was like a (very) low budget version of Back To The Future! Entertaining though. Keep up the good work.

  • Liked the Nokia 701....feeling like to choose symbian again over android (though ios is no.1 on my list)

I love your show but honestly, i found the future thingy lame (plz no offense)

    thank you steve

  • @incorefoysal Yes, it was a bit lame. But I wanted to make the point that the future is likely to be voice and greater device intelligence rather than ever-larger superphones, a la the current trend.... 8-)

  • @stevelitchfield It was brilliant, caught the short sightedness of some perfectly.

  • @stevelitchfield thank u 4 da reply :D curiously waiting 4 show 155 :D

  • Nokia Morph 'was' expected for that year.

  • @Leonis1989 It was delayed by a MSFT DOS 10.2 bug caused by the cerebral interface inducing flatulence when inserting.

  • Are you going to review the N9. If not, what are your thoughts on it?

  • @Shawshank00 Another device I've been trying to extract from Nokia PR - I'll redouble my efforts now that the major firmware update is out! 8-)

  • As always, very entertaining, thanks. Will you be reviewing Lumia 800 soon? Am in the process of convincing myself (never mind the misses) that I can afford one, but always need to see what SL thinks of it first.

  • @kesterwww Yes, have been pestering Nokia for one for The Phones Show since the launch - nothing so far 8-(

  • was just watching 153 when I got an email telling me the next show was available, great show!

  • the 2nd half would be more believable if the phone was made by anyone but nokia ;)

    just kidding though, nice episode

  • @ichi1082 Heh. Background note on the dummy phone used: the dummies of most other smartphones would have been too big, both in plan form factor and depth. The N86 dummy was just right for prising apart and using just the top bit. 8-)

  • Good points on the future steve.. i got your humor.. LOL.. :)

  • wow, checkerboard in 2011, seems unreal. Great show steve!

  • have been waiting for show 154 :D

  • Great show, Steve!

  • @JustinVisser1 How can you know that? You posted this comment less than a minute after I made the show live! 8-)

  • @stevelitchfield I just know 8-)

  • @stevelitchfield He must have assumed it based on previous trends *be flattered, be VERY flattered* :D

  • @stevelitchfield he watched it in 2015!
