@MrDanielinthehouse 1st of all, the potion is actually called the Drink of Despair, it was most likely created by voldemort, who knows, and it MUST br drunk, it induces fear, delirium, and extreme thirst. The drink cannot be penetrated by hand, vanished, parted, scooped up, siphoned away, Transfigured, Charmed, or made to change its nature in any way. It can only be drained away by drinking.

I do believe voldemort cursed it so that it could only be drank. It's also the reason why you cant just scoop up something else with the shell, just the potion. Voldemort designed it so that the person would suffer, he wanted the locket to be safe. THe potion also causes the person to relieve their worst memories and become very dehydrated.

For example, if a 7-year old kid drank it, it probably wouldn't have been as bad, since the potion wouldn't have a lot to work with.
