I do not know who recorded it first... but Buck wrote it!... oh, I forgot another one.. "all I want for chrismas is you".... lyrics and music, guess who...
I know I am going to take a ton of crap about this but I never understood how Buck Owens got as far as he did.......his voice is average at best, his playing is just basic 5 chord strumming. Did he ever "write" any hit songs?........I could see if he was a great writer but not that good a player......maybe I'm wrong......please tell me what the attraction is......not kidding, tell me
@inkey2 Well, most country music from the 50's and 60's (Hell, and a lot of the stuff today) is nothing more than 3 chords and, as Harlan Howard put it, the truth. It's about the feel, the song writing and the sound of the band. Buck wrote a lot of songs with Harlan Howard, who's one of the greatest song writers in country music history. Buck also developed a knack for developing "hooks" in his song writing. He wrote songs like "Together Again", "Love's Gonna Live Here", "My Heart Skips a Beat"
@inkey2 And "Under Your Spell Again". The song writing is admittedly simple, but it's very easy to relate to for many people, myself included. Common emotions expressed eloquently, yet simply. But apart from that, Buck had a great band, if not the BEST band in country music history. His Buckaroos had such a tight sound live and in the studio that it could be awe inspiring at times. To top that off, they all improvised freely so the songs were free to take on their own life.
@inkey2 Buck's musicians were some of the best... also if I may add, even though Buck's voice may not be astounding to listen to, it's always on pitch. Buck developed perfect pitch at some point in his life. This made it easier for his harmony singer and lead guitarist, Don Rich to harmonize. Don Rich sang harmony on a level equivalent to Paul McCartney, which is one of the reasons the Beatles loved Buck's music. Between the relateable songwriting, great harmonies, and tight band, he had "it".
@inkey2 Hello.... Buck wrote hits like "crying time", "together again", he was co-writer and producer of "L.A. International Airport". I don´t know, if these are not hits and legendary songs of country music
@inkey2 I just checked ... Buck recorded "crying time" in 1964, Ray did in 1966. so, you are right. Ray covered Buck. So, after Ray´s death, Buck was certainly millions with the rights on this song.
1:30 is where the real magic begins. If a twang like that don't make you want to bob your head like a fool your soulless. Why can't more people play like this now?
I read somewhere that Don's widow gave Buck Don's fender telecaster and wanted him to use Don's guitar when performing so I would guess you are seeing Don Rich's guitar in this video. Vern from Towner ND
I don't play guitar but I have a question, is that specific guitar one of the ones Don played on? Sure looks like the ones he had. Just askin' thanks!
I doubt it is the actual Telecaster guitar, Buck and Don were given identical guitars by Fender QUOTE :
Buck and Don received new guitars in 1966, a pair of Silver Flake Telecasters that were double bound in plain black. (That fits the description perfectly)
You can read more about the guitar deal with Fender if you check out Don Rich on Wikipedia. Apparently Buck wouldn't give back guitars (for exchange) when 7 years old so Fender stopped giving him new ones.
Buck Owens' music is timeless. If he were still alive today, he could definitely stand head and shoulders above the other country stars. His songs were relevant, and they all had a great melody to them. I only wish Don Rich had lived longer to continue playing with Buck, as he was Buck's right arm. Buck's music will never die!
@gramhound86 Terry Christopherson, you can find him on some of the later Hee Haw videos, as he played pedal steel with Buck on there. While Tom Brumley was my favorite Buckaroo pedal steel player by far, Ralph Mooney (who played with Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings) and Terry were also great pedal steel players as well.
Hey Buck i gotta tell ya you play guitar so natural love the song too, I remember when you used to smile and i like it better when you smile and play. Stopped in at your bar once Nice place. Your style is unbeatable other than ole Roy, You are so blessed to have such company i know you will die with a guitar in your hands and thank you for pushin on:) Peter Popp
I must say, I am not a big fan of country music but I dont hate it either. I gotta tell you this song is really really nice. I could play this in my mp3 player. Living in the city kinda takes me away from classic tunes but I am open minded so if anyone wants to recommend any classic country tracks, I will listen to each one of them.
@0047124 try Gene Autry Makes no differance now or Gram Parsons close up the honky tonks(great bass work on this one)Ernest Tubbs Lets say good by like we said Hello maybe Lyle Lovettes shes leaving me because she realy wants to.Emmy lu harris How she could sing the wild wood flower great song by her

@georgiaroadgeek: Well sadly George, Country music has been overtaken by the suits, who wanted to turn it into simply another division of pop music; and have succeeded in doing so. Sad end to a great tradition. :-(
