  • hey, what is an SPS and an LPS? Sorry, I am new to reefing.

  • small polyped stonie or large polyp stonie

  • SPS and LPS are acronyms

SPS is a Small Polyped Scleractinian (stony)

LPS is a Large Polyped Scleractinian (stony)

Scleractinia is an order under the class Anthozoa, which includes anemones and corals. Scleractinian corals are closely related to anemones, but have a hard calcium carbonate skeleton, which is seen clearly in SPS corals and often hidden under the polyps of LPS corals. "Scleractinia" comes from the roots "scler=hard" and "actinia=ray", and so "hard-rayed".
