Can't decide whether the host, Mark Kelley, was just trying to play an ill-timed devil's advocate or whether he just didn't "get it"! Either way, his handling of this seemed out quite out of step with CBC's usual "savvy' when it comes to historical integrity. This Canadian is not impressed!

Honestly I think on the left we'd do better slaughtering sacred cows. Kennedy was no liberal neither are Clinton and Obama, we have nothing to lose by purging the corporatist royalty out of what is supposed to be the people's party. Whatever your opinion of them as people these three men are a huge liability to the movement and their "centrism" is the top culprit in the lefts appeasement and outright adoption of Reaganomics.

@furseiseki But liberals are apologists by nature. We understand that humans have flaws and foibles, and allow that. The right wing smear machine sees that only as weakness. Empathy has no place in their world of politics. Kennedy is still viewed by most conservatives as a bastion of liberalism, even though he wasn't, and allowing a factually inaccurate character smear takes away a symbol. To paraphrase Batman, "People need symbols" - and the left as much as anyone because of Obama's weakness.

@mexcurmudgeon I don't think apologist is quite the right word. Liberals are generally more accepting of human flaws as you say, but to say someone is an apologist has certain connotations. An apologist is someone who tries to paper over the flaws in whatever they're representing to give a oftentimes unmerited favorable outlook. Here liberals were trying to prevent an unmerited unfavorable outlook.

Other than that nit-pick I think you're quite right.

I think at this point, the mythos concerning the Kennedy's will be forever dramatized, it was always the case. When people look at the Kennedy's, they see the mythos and the fantasy of Kennedy, the show pretty much upholds it. When people think of Nixon, they think of a troll like figure, or when thinking of LBJ, they think of a curmudgeony old man who redeems himself with civil rights (Actually, that's pretty accurate). Anyways, visual media never gets any politician accurate at all, so what?
