I'm researching this same exact topic for my writing class. Interesting to see a documentary has been made about the eastern oyster. If Mr. Finchman's summary (posted on a Smithsonian blog that I can't link to) of the film is correct then I guess my research is coming out well :)
I'm just curious, do you think that the watermen of the future will depend on aquaculture like the watermen in Virginia? And is Sea Grant going to post this doc on youtube?
@ilovec0mputers Oyster aquaculture is just starting to take hold in Maryalnd and some watermen are involved in it. However, those close to the industry have commented that "fewer than one in twenty" watermen will want to work as oyster farmers since the jobs are so different. Few watermen would have the considerable startup funds it would take and they don't like working for someone else. Regardless of who's involved, it seems that aquaculture is here to stay.
awesome video! its great to see old oyster schooners still at it just like how my ancestors used to fish for them. my gramps used to have 2 boats like that when I was younger but unfortunately they were crushed up. hopefully this boat keeps it up and gets preserved as well as it is now. thanks for sharing!
@dustyC420 Thanks for the note. This old oyster boat is still afloat and so is its captain at 88. Art Daniels went oystering again this season. Eat oysters, live longer. Here in Maryland these boats are called skipjacks. A long time ago they were called "two-sailed bateaux." Enjoyed your scalloping and clamming videos and will look forward to more in the future. Good fishing!
