The jobs that you think went to Canada didn't come here. your USA is one sided in everything, look at the softwood lumber disputes, the US has challenged it numerous times and lost in court, they claim we subsidize out lumber industry but in reality we don't & that was proven each time you challenged it in court. The same can be said for agriculture, we don't subsidize but the US does but yet you accuse Canada.

The jobs that you think went to Canada didn't come here. your USA is one sided in everything, look at the softwood lumber disputes, the US has challenged it numerous times and lost in court, they claim we subsidize out lumber industry but in reality we don't & that was proven each time you challenged it in court. The same can be said for agriculture, we don't subsidize but the US does but yet you accuse Canada.

I Love Merle Haggard,but crazyape is right. I wish it were as simple as the song. the passage of NAFTA was a horrible mistake,and it was supported by most democrats and republicans. The backbone of the U.S. economy was those 15-25 dollar an hour manufacturing jobs. The corporations sent those jobs overseas and to canada and mexico. Go to Walmart and you'll be hard pressed to find anything made in America.

I agree with you to a point, but why do you think those jobs are going overseas? If we have free trade, then why in the hell is the government taxing the hell out of these companies? If you owned a company, and made no profit, because of government regulations in a global economy, where would you go? Answer: where you CAN make a profit. Too much emphasis on the corporations being bad, when it is the government that causes all of this. It starts at the top and trickles down to us.

I grew up listening to & loving Merle.
My dad & I bought his records. Sadly, according to him, because I disagree with the Bush doctrine, I should be dealt with violently. And it's a bit hypocritical, because as other men were off fighting in wars in Asia, Merle was busy as a petty thief and ultimately ended up in San Quentin for 3 yrs. I don't see how he is superior. Oh well, I still love him and the Bakersfield sound will always be my favorite.
P.S. I am an army vet (Air Defense Artillery).

I was at his concert two days ago and Merle said he wrote "Okie" about his father's dustbowl generation living side by side with the late 60's hippie lifestyle. As for this song, due to his very conservative outlook in 68', I highly doubt it was written tongue in cheek.

My understanding is that "Okie" was inspired by the statement "I'll bet they don't smoke no marijuana in Muskogie" as a joint was passed around the his tour bus passing the highway sign.. Oh-Rah...from a Combat marine who survived 2 wars, only two come home to have a teminal type of cancer. Ironic huh? I just wish God would had let me die on the battlefield instead of like this. IF you research how Merle voted in 2008, you'll see that he did NOT vote for Obama. It doesn't say he voted for McCain either. My mistake from a previous post..
Merle said he was against the war in Iraq, but he NEVER made any mention of being anti-military, cuttng back on funding for the military, being anti-gitmo and the techniques that were used there, he never said he was against he war in Afghanistan.
All I can find him saying is he is against the Iraq war and he didn't vote for Obama.
