  • Am I the only one that broke out into air-guitar when Johnny B Goode started playing?

  • @ReaperOfPears Yes.

  • I believe "Hi! Hi! Hi!" sounds more like The Trial from Pink Floyd's The Wall, and Belch's Factory sounds more like Flash by Queen until it sounds like Jaws in that last bit of the sample.

Otherwise, I agree with most of these. They're hilarious.

  • I always thought that Who song sounded a lot like the Sky Runner theme XD

  • @AgeOfPisces I noticed one more song (probably) in Fourside Cafe (Boris' Cocktail): One little part of Duran Duran's song "Tel Aviv" in 7:30 (In Tel Aviv's first seconds /watch?v=Ec3DlFbSlK0)

  • allright, heres the deal with belches factory. it is a remake of of duncans factory from mother 1. duncans factory is almost a sound alike to welcome to the machine. so if you are confused why this man put that in, he didn't make a mistake.

  • Just to say, the drugstore is NOT when I'm 64. It's a REALLY old song called "Dallas Rag". Look it up, it's about as similar as it gets.

  • Wow, I had no idea so much of this music was sampled and/or done in the style of other songs. The only one I recognized while playing was Johnny B. Goode.

It sucks that there's such a potential legal minefield that's keeping Earthbound from being re-released. I guess we could say, given the Sky Runner theme, that those lawyers ...

    *sunglasses*

    Won't get fooled again.

  • It would be SO awesome if you edited EarthBound and replaced all the sampled music with the originals.

  • And exactly HOW did they manage to get all this past the radar?

  • @shalpp lawer were not something to be afraid of back then

  • This is exactly the video I had hoped to see since the early 2000's. mohteryouhadme 's channel was an incredible fix, but this one cover's every little area I can think of. Other than the bus theme being a play on the Peter Gunn theme. (blues brothers!) You deserve recognition from starman.net!!!

  • It's Marseillaise, for crying out loud. The Beatles sampled it in the first place.

  • Good stuff, just thought I'd add that the Cave of the Past is actually a sample slowed down multiple times from the opening of Deirdre by The Beach Boys.

  • 5:34

How I know that song too well.

I should know. My sister has a cd with THAT song.

  • I think they took care of the Xeivous music.

  • saturn valley reminds me of the star wars cantina theme

  • I highly doubt belch's factory was based on that song because mother 1 had the original music for when you were in the underwater rooms when you met EVE.

  • MONTY PYTHON NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!!!

  • LOL XD at Saturn Valley being "Wild Honey Pie"... Although... It really does sound the same to me! Most of The Beatles-EarthBound stuff does sound simillar (sp?) since I'm probably the BIGGEST Beatles fan here xD

  • Tequila and Johnny Be Good are the only two i actually recognized as parodies the first time playing...

  • I thought the Runaway Five's song was "Money (That's What I Want)". At least that's what I heard when I got to the middle of the song.

  • That was awesome. I love how much Classic Rock they sampled in the game.

  • Can you provide more info about El Bimbo?

  • The shop theme is a rag, that's all it is. You even mention "Dallas Rag" in your comment and still claim it has something specifically to do with "When I'm 64". This seems pretty ridiculous to me.

The similarity between "Good Morning, Good Morning" and the Hotel morning song is... what, a repeated two-note phrase? Same for Tessie and "SFF"... really? What an absurd stretch. It's like a teenager that just discovered the Beatles and is imagining connections where there aren't any...

  • I'm a huge fan of EarthBound and the Beatles.

I take no issue with most of the SAMPLES given. (Although I don't think you mentioned that the Sound Stone background track is the opening rhythm of "Give Peace a Chance".) However, a lot of the other stuff where you claim that the music itself is taken from elsewhere is unfounded.

  • I once read that there's a reference to the Super Mario Bros. theme in Master Belch's battle theme. Was on Wikipedia, but last time I checked, it had since been removed.

Anyway, plan to research more of this? I'm particularly interested in Battle Against a Machine, and maybe also Battle Against a Mobile Opponent and Pokey Means Business.

  • This is so, so, so good. Seriously. I've literally never bothered to say this before, but you did such a good job with this. I've been a hardcore, HARDCORE Earthbound fan since I was 8, and heavily involved with the community, and I still didn't even know some of these.

  • little fun fact about earthbound b4 it was released: the original name 4 the sky runner was gonna be sky walker, but nintendo said "NO!!". as well as the clothing of the runaway 5, nintendo thought it looked to much liked the blues brothers, so they changed it.

  • While I can certainly hear some of the same notes in some of these songs, it seems to be far more coincidence than anything. I'm not convinced at all of even any inspiration from The Beatles.

  • @GregorioXII The people who made the music of the game said they were inspired by The Beatles. And Itoi himself had said he is a huge Beatles fan. Besides, how else would you explain the Yellow Submarine in Dungeon Man?

  • I really hate the beatles... but strawberry fields forever is an exception.

  • where can i download the soundtrack album?

  • hey now speaking of samples & influences there's a lot more where THAT came from....

  • Uh, you do realize that the beginning of All You Need is Love is the beginning of La Marseillaise, the French national anthem. That is pretty well known, so I wouldn't assume that they took that from the Beatles song, they just made it sound similar to La Marseillaise.

  • @jooshiscrazy I'm sure he realizes it, but it's actually a sample from the recording used on All You Need is Love. It doesn't sound quite the same, but that's mostly because it's been compressed enough to be used in an SNES game.

  • It's just like Doom. They sampled music like crazy for that game.

Basically they handed their composer a bunch of metal albums and told him "make it sound like this" and then he did.

He used to be an attorney or something and apparently knew just how much he could sample and get away with.

  • To me, the cliff that time forgot sounds vaguely like the Beatles' "You're Gonna Carry That Weight"

  • This is so blatant reason. Many games at the time done this:

Actraiser's ending and 20th Century Fox fanfare, Robo's theme and Rick Astley, SF2: Ken's theme and Cheap trick. Worst of all is the first Sonic the Hedgehog game with many "borrowed" music and was re-released many times.

  • @After4th Can you explain this a little better? It sounds really interesting, but I've never noticed any of those. I see how Robo's theme sounds kind of like Never Gonna Give You Up, but I wouldn't really call it sampling. It's like Elec Man's theme from the first Mega Man and All the Right Friends by REM. They're similar, but it's doubtful that it's intentional. And what exactly is borrowed in Sonic? I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I'm just curious.

  • @ninjapocalypse I learned Sonic's music similarities after watching a video uploaded by "Clan Of The Gray Wolf" (16 bit gems). It includes Marble Zone and Andy Williams - "Music to Watch Girls By", Spring Yard Zone and Bobby Brown - "Every Little Step", and probably many more not shown. Whether you agree if the music sound similar.

  • Thanks for uploading wonderful describing word in the video for the deaf and hard-of-hearing so I can feel music better and understand which titles from the Beatles.

  • Wild Honey Pie = Beatles music on the white album x3

  • This explains why the music is so amazing

  • This is the main reason why we will never see earthbound again on virtual console...

    MPAA RIAA bullcrap

Oh well, there are roms online illegally to play :D

  • Looks like the Skyrunner...

    *sunglasses*

Should have looked where it was running.

    YEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!

  • I can see how a lot of them might be inspired... but beyond that, it's not really that much more.

  • The only one I knew off the bat was the acrade one

  • Where are you getting those song titles for the EB songs? They don't sound right at all. For example, the shop theme is supposed to be "Humoresque of a Little Dog", not whatever you called it.

  • Me: DAD, COME IN HERE! IT PLAYS THE MONTY PYTHON THEME IN THIS SONG!

    Dad: I don't hear it.

    Me: *facepalm*

  • I totally guessed on the last one, and got it right! I also freaked out about the Skyrunner music being related to The Who's "Won't be Fooled Again"

  • wow never knew this, great info, never really liked the beatles to much but I loved Earthbound music so I guess that makes me some sort of weird hypocrite. damn you space time continuum!

  • Isn't Johnny B. Goode also the inspiration for the New Age Retro Hippie's theme?

  • @MrSaturn22222 The New Age Retro Hippie theme and the theme for Frank Fly are the same song.

  • Boris's Cocktail? It's Jackie's Cafe, and it contains the US National Anthem

  • the earthbound songs sound like someone was playing the original songs backwords

  • @AgeofPisces Wow, this must have taken a lot of work. Seriously. I'm really impressed. I'm doing a bit of research myself for an academic paper about The Beatles and how they remain immortalized in pop culture. Just wondering if you had found any articles or information that helped you come to the conclusions you do in the video, and if you can pass any on to me. Once again, great work!

  • Enjoy your Stay always reminded me of Tango, for some strange reason o.o

  • Shigesato Itoi named the series Mother because he cried at a performance of Mother at a John Lennon concert.

  • about how many songs in this game did they actually create completely on their own (without any references whatsoever)?

  • @ctrlaltdestroy000 Pokey Means Business? :D?

  • The way the lyrics are sung in "Honey Pie" match up reasonably to how one might try to talk like Mr.Saturn.

  • I think the alien invasion sounds like the intro to "it's magic" by the cars

  • I think alien invasion sounds more like the bongos in thriller.

  • Shigesato Itoi does love the Beatles

  • I knew I recognized the trumpet player! Thank you f or pointing that out. :)

  • why is embedded disabled. you know you get more video views when you let people embed it. isn't the point of youtube, to get people to watch your videos?

  • GOOD MORNINGU!

    GOD DAMN.

    THlS TOOK ALOT OF EFFORT.

    GOOD JOB!

  • You, sir, are amazing for have made a comparison between songs from The Beatles and songs from Earthbound.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a definite "Strawberry Fields Forever" vibe from "Tessie Has Been Sighted".

  • Fantastic video. Thank you for putting this together. A+++ seller would buy from again!

  • You could also make a convincing video about how much The Beatles and the Beach Boys yanked from Chuck Berry. On a relevant note, some of these are definitely a stretch, but I could see where there'd be a problem with some.

  • This is going to hurt Nintendo if this becomes famous. Get rid of this video.

BTW, those music samples are creating a situation that is currently blocking the game from receiving an Virtual Console release.

  • I always thought "The Cliff That Time Forgot" was based off the trumpet intro from that japenese movie that Itoi saw as a kid that gave him the inspiration for Giygas...If you look up that movie/scene that song will be there

  • The intro to a song I hear at work all the time sounds alot like the Tenda Village music...I just have no idea what the song is called!

  • Jeff: I departed as soon as I could!

Ness: Looks like your flight was *canceled*.

    YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!! DUN-DUN-D-DUNNNNN

  • I think that Buy Something Will Ya is based off of Dallas Rag, an old jazzy song. But When I'm Sixty-Four definitely has a resemblance. Good job on making a video that compiles all of this.

  • :33

  • Oh FUCK!!

  • Something you could of added was the song that plays when you drink the coffee/tea, because it sounds a lot like Echoes by Pink Floyd.

  • The song in Mother 3, for the modernised Tazmily village, is similar to an ABBA song

  • The Who probably inspired the Sky Runner song? I approve.

    Excellent video!

  • when i'm 64 and the store music sounds nothing alike

  • you gotta listen to the backbeat, I agree though

  • A lot of these are a bit of a stretch

  • I KNEW The Cliff That Time Forgot sounded like a Beatles song!

  • some of them are wrong :/

Liberty Bell March IS the one used in the naming screen, and it's Monty Python's Flying Circus, too.

  • The Onett arcade music also includes samples of a Nintendo Arcade game called "Sheriff".

Fun stuff too, it's like Smash TV with cowboys.

  • the drugstore song is actually from this song dude: /watch?v=blZeRHg6RUM

  • This is a great video. Very informative, and one of the few ten minute videos where I actually watched the whole thing! Good job!

  • I knew about Good Morning Good Morning, but Sgt. Peppers Reprise was... astounding...

Also, I always thought that comparing NAR Hippie/Frankie's songs to JUST Johnny B. Goode was a little dumb.

  • theres a door in onett the when you go to it says what is the famous beatles song terday do you know the answear yes YOUR RIGHT!!!!

  • hey, maybe someday, we'll describe more earthbound what it looks like, the music based like and what it sounds like completely

  • Most of he songs in EarthBound are based in the Beatles's music, but I'm quite sure that the store theme (Humoresque of a little dog) is actually based in Dallas Rag.

  • Yes, the original song is the Dallas Rag, but I'm certain that the Beatles's version was the one used in the game.

  • @AgeOfPisces

Didn't really sound like it. Barely sounded like it, actually.

  • excellent analogy! can you do snobow kids plus on psx, snowboard kids 2/super snobow kids, mischief makers/yuke yuke troublemakers, spin jam, revelations: persona/megami ibunroku persona, sonic the hedgehog 1, 2, 3, knuckles, 3D blast, and adventure 1 and 2. I'm a huge fan of videogame music origins, sweet!

  • I want to try making a video game music origins series but I'm currently busy with college. I will definitely make some videos in the future.

  • This i cool!!!! I am a HUGE Beatles fan, myself!!! How 'bout you???

  • Of course I'm a huge Beatles fan.

  • I didn't know the store one was When I'm 64!!!

BTW, "I Buried Paul" @ the Alien Invasion clip part! If you follow the "Paul Is Dead" Urban Legend!!!
