Depression is a natural and important part of life. The more depressed you can be, the more happy you can be.
There is one problem however, what need will there be to strive to hapiness if you should never actually to have it? Why should you then try to get it in the first place?

Meaning is part of the programming to keep you functioning. The spiritual side is a self defense mechanism to stop all your little organelles and cells from self destructing. Why do they want to live? Because that is their purpose, its a simple mathematical feedback system woven into nature.
The science behind where we come from where we are in the universe and how we interpret our 4 dimensions is pretty good. But the spiritual side is really up to you.

My meaning of life is to live it in the way I desire it. I desire life to be richly in knowledge. I hope to be a book collector that has a grand library of hundreds of thousands of books on the many shelves in his study.
To have a woman that will not only be a beneficial to my life, but that I can be one to hers as well. To have her to be passionate with always, never concerning ourselves over the value of the dollar or living by it.

Not in the way people give meanings to things. In fact it is obvious that we do not control life, so it is obvious it is not us who would give life it's true meaning (establish the what and why).

Helping others to achieve fulfilness and satisfaction is just as much focussing on your own ego as getting satisfaction from something else. You have the same goal; feeling happy. Should you feel bad and awfull after trying to help others, you wouldn't do so. It is a load of crap, just like people screeming we have to be tolerant; what they are saying is "if you don't adjust to my believes, you are not tolerant"

Many people here are missing the true meaning of life because they insist thinking in selifish terms - my own happinness.
The best way to feel fulfilness and satasifaction from life is to help others and try to focus less on the ego (and obviously there is no shortage of people needing help).
So we should focus on the quote of George Bernard Shaw and the cleverness of the Cherokee Expression.
That's at least my opinion.

All beings have a meaning for life or they wouldn't be there from the start ;)
The basic meaning for life derives from something that makes us alive and strive to survive.
This something however, is not recognized in science, as it is logically not measurable because something that is as it is can't be life. The physical can't be the source for the physical, and what isn't physical can't be measured.

The biggest problem is this: life is eternal in essence. You can be eternally happy and eternally depressed in terms of 'feelings'.
We strive to hapiness. But if we would already have it, there won't be need to improve so there won't be a meaning again and 'no hapiness'. This reward system is meant to thrive us in life.
Depression is a natural and important part of life. The more depressed you can be, the more happy you can be.

Religion is a nice way two cope with the idea that we have some hold on our future and there is the possibility that we have more of a meaning on this earth then just to take up space.
