This is really one of Jordan's most masterful playoff performances. And remember he scored 56 in regulation, mind you, which is second during the playoffs only to his 63 point barrage in the Boston Garden which was in double overtime, I believe. I'm not sure how many points he had @ BOS in regulation, though.
This performance featured more of a jump shooting exhibition than was his game in Boston. He was more of a complete player at this time (age 29) and had a more reliable J.
@g0ldbuG i think in regulation he ended with 43.and the game ended with triple overtime.and in this game he scored 56 in 3 quarters.LOL this clearly must be his best playoff game
@Mraloneandsad i agree. at this point in his career (~29 y. o.) he was a much more well rounded player and in his prime whereas the Boston game was very early on after he had come back from that broken foot in '85 where he was more of a dynamic slasher.
I'd advise fans to watch "Michael Jordan vs. real defenses." It's an accurate dissection of the defenses Jordan faced in his prime, including teams that got away with running 1-3-1 and 3-2 zone defenses (Knicks, Pistons, Celtics, and more). The only illegal zone was 2-3. But the thing is those zones were actually vital because there was no def. 3 second rule, which allowed for great defensive spacing. Factor that in along WITH handchecking and that makes it a tougher era than today by far.
everyone says tha mj is truly the best, i dont quite really agree to that. but i agree he's totaly an outstanding player. he did win 6 rings. but he didnt do i alone. i mean without rodman, phil and pippen? can he do it? probably, but we dont know. pippen is a great factor to chicago before. anyway for me the best is olajuwon. why? he wins all the way to finals all by himself. no pippen, no shaq, no star player by his side he just did it, all by him self. yet he doesnt get too much credit.
@XKiDCraZyX well yeah, i mean take a look at his team. does he have a real good team mates? consistent has, but not as good as pippen, shaq, gasol, kobe and etc.. besides i give credit to him as a fan. that would never changed. as for u, i guess u dont know what being a big fan is. btw did mj did it all by him self?
@blitsziro *SMH* Drexler, Horry, Smith. Yeah they are not as good Pippen, Shaq, Gasol, and Kobe but take the Mavericks for example. There "only" good palyer is Dirk right? So he won the ring by himself right? No because he still had Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, Tyson Chandler. Not as good as the others but they didn't have to be because of Dirk. Oh yeah and this is coming from someone who has lived in Houston during their glory days and a fan. XD
@XKiDCraZyX as for dirk thats true, but i dont give credit for terry and chandler. but for barrea and kid. the thing is its all on dirks hard work. without dirk. their nothing. ur just recycling what i meant before. yeah right drexle when? that was 1995. what about 1994? horry? my god he's not even a real big help. only consistent. yeah right ur from houston? do i care? no, not even sure if ur telling that u r really from houston before. besides, did olajuwon ever had the credit like shaq?
@blitsziro Same goes for you. Also why does it matter if he gets as much credit as the other ones, all that matters is that he got the ring. And if you really knew anything about basketball you'd know that terry was a big help off the bench and in some of their games scored the most points in the fourth quarter. As for Tyson Chandler, Without him their defense would be garbage. It takes a team to win a championship not just one person so you obviously weren't even born when they won their rings
@XKiDCraZyX i dont care about that.. and pls dont compare dallas to houston before. theres a real big difference to what happen, and do i need to be knowledgeable by being a fan? what ever u say, wont make a changed. its like i said before. olajuwon doesnt get much credit like shaq or jordan. though the thing is, a lot of players especialy jordan and shaq give olajuwon big credits. but for fans, nope they dont give much. so i guess shaq and jordan dont know about bsketbol.
@blitsziro So what does him "not getting" all the credit he deserves make him any better than Jordan. Saying that Olajuwon won both rings by himself is just ignorant. Also I dont need to prove anything to you about being an old time Houston Fan. One thing we can both agree on (and many others) is that Olajuwon was the greatest post player of his time. Hell he'd probably dominate if he was still in shorts.
@XKiDCraZyX my point is, jordan gets credit from being the guy who wins the ring all by him self. like without him the chicago are worthless. thats not true. when jordan left the chicago made it to the playoffs. like shaq, shaq has more credits than olajuwon. but jordan truly an amazing player, but he still got a real good team mate and a coach. besides, u may not give credit olajuwon as i do. but jordan and shaq, gives olajuwon the credit like i do.
Wilt Chamberlain: 4(highest point in a game is 56)
Allen Iverson: 3
After Jordan retired from Chicago Bulls, 50-point games in playoffs have happened "8" more times ( Iverson 3, Malone 1, Carter 1, Nowitzki 1, Kobe 1, Ray Allen 1.)
Jordan = Iverson + Malone + VC + Dirk + Kobe + Ray Allen
There is Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us.
@oamohotshot Pretty much all legends in sports would have a chance with teams in different eras. Today's Miami Heat is not even close to the Bad Boys (defence wise) . MJ could've dropped 50+ vs any team in anytime.
"During my rookie year with the Miami Heat, one of my teammates, Willie Burton, did something he shouldn't have done. When Jordan didn't score any points in the first quarter, Willie told Michael, 'Hey, we're shutting you down tonight. We're going to stop you.' Michael went on to score 56 points in the last three quarters. The worst thing about what Willie did was he wasn't the primary man guarding Michael. I was. So I have 56 unpleasant memories of Jordan from that playoff game." -- Steve Smith
@shermstyle23 all dat shit u sayin is irrelevant to my comment, kobe or how the nba use to b has nothing to do wit mj scoring 56pts against miami heat in 1992. it doesnt matter if im a kobe fan or not i click on dis vid to c mj. Just cuz u bitch about how tha game is today dont make u a fan
@Underratedmetal1 if it took u 10 times 2 read wat i said u need 2 slit yo throat 10 times bcuz u do not need b alive if u contain such a combination of stupidity n dumbness. just cause i dnt spell the all the words out u cnt understand it, do the world a favor find the sharpest knife u own n get the cuttin
@tp23ful Seriously, you are sick ... mad, crazy ... there's no word for your sickness. If you were my son, I'd rather kill you than be forced to live with you. Get a life, for this shit you live is not life.
@Underratedmetal1 if it took u 10 times 2 understood wat i said u need 2 slit yo throat 10 times bcuz u do not need 2 b alive if u contain such a combination of stupidity n dumbness, just cuz i dont spell da words out or use text slang u cnt understand it, do the world a favor get the sharpest knife u own n get da cuttin
i dont no y yall frontin like yall like mj half yall search his videos just to talk shit about kobe dat dont make yall mj fans. I dont see one comment actually talkin about the video.Kobe doesnt even care to b like mj he just wants to win he dont care about none of them lame ass stats yall b researching to post up. Futhermore if mj is better y even bring kobe up. Its a shame that real mj fans dont exist no more
@tp23ful Its funny how Kb fans make it to MJ videos to talk badly about MJ. And why compare Kb to Mj, its bcus LA has built up Kb's rep and The NBA has also. If u google clutch, u can see that Kb is rated the game's best clsoer nowadays, but makes 1 out of every 3 clutch shots & is even worst in the last 5 minutes of a game.Yet somehow he got the game's best closer title, whilst MJ put up 49% in clutch shots. & u can google that. So howd Kb get best closer if he only makes so few at the end?
@tp23ful And I am a fan of the game. Nowadays the game has devolved in terms of basketball toughness & strategy. You got players who cant shoot jump shots & yet be a valuable guard. A guard that cant shoot a jumpshot is ridiculous (Rondo). Dwight Howard can rebound, dunk and doa hook shot and has no further range. Vince Carter cant do anything in the clutch & is inconsistent in games. And thats with no handchecking and a defensive 3 second rule to make it easier to score.
@tp23ful Now u got all these average players scoring 30 pt games and getting triple doubles and yet they cant even shoot. Any hard kind of foul is called a flagrant nowadays. You cant even body up like u used to. In highschool and college, they teach u to body up and play hard defense, yet in the NBA they make u play defense without touching the offensive player on the perimeter. I mean seriously, the game is supposed to evolve and yet here we are with rules to make it easier,
Nice to see some people actually realize that todays league is in "easy mode" since these ridiculous rule changes, yet players can't deliver. To be honest it makes me sad.
Exactly.... It's maddening how pro sports always seem to lean towards making offense easier... for some reason these non athlete idiots who run the sports think offense sell's tickets... HELL no.... NFL is doing the same thing with all these tick tack rules on defense...
@Shermstyle23 basketball is was wayyyyyyyyyyyy better back then when jordan played than it is today and itt ws harder back then too i started watching basketball in 1986 when jordan took on bird and the celtics and from then on i was a jordan fanatic! 1986 till 2003 after 2003 nba started going down lebron jsames could not play back in the 80's and 90's it was brutal
@bball2372 So you're telling me a man that is 6'9 260 lb's with brute strength could've have played but a guy like Zeke Thomas who was 61 180 dominated? GTFOH! Lebron would dominate in any era fool! No he's not Jordan but I mean damn man NOBODY is. You don't have to shit on other players and other eras in order to elevate Jordan to a status that he can't get any higher than. It's almost damn near idol worshipping!
y'all r hyping MJ so much, look at the defenders guarding him in this game. The players back then were slow and crap compared to the super athletic players of today. Thats why Kobe is the GOAT... MJ still #2 though ;P
@reneperezz Don't talk shit! Kobe isn't even in the top10 best basketball players ever. There are many basketball player in the past who where better than Kobe Bryant! Magic and Bird where 2 of them. And MJ is untouchable!!
@reneperezz Its the opposite. Kb is hyped up so much. Clutch MJ is way better. Last nite, KB got the ball stolen and Clipeprs scored to help seal the game. Not only that, explain a 38-40 yr old MJ scoring 40+ and 50+ pt games against these supposedly better players. Sure some athletes are physically better these days, but there are a lot of NBA palyers that arent as smart in basketball tactics. Kb still takes a 3pt shot over 2 defenders for the win when he has 3 open shooters And he missed
@reneperezz Even tho players like Kb and Mj can make those 3pt shots over 2 players and have a higher fg% than most players, that is still not hte smartest play to make. Drive the ball in and you either open up a shot for ur teammates, get a foul or get an AND1 situation. So even tho players may be more physically gifted, they are not smarter basketball players. The league even made rules to make it easier for players to score so that they could ty and get anohter Mj in kb, but its not working
@reneperezz Even Magic Johnson has stated that Mj could score 45+pts in todays game and that Mj is the GOAT. Realzie that Kobe is not a player that plays to win, Kobe plays for the glory. Players like MJ, Bird and Magic were palyers who always played to win. They played to beat the other competitors. Kobe is there for the glory. Even Lebron is only concerned with his legacy and not firstly on winning. thats where the game has changed and why many dont watch the game nowadays.
@reneperezz The game used to be about winning, but now its all about STATS, RECORDS and LEGACY. Players before played to win and let their games speak for themselves. U've seen Kb make horrib;e decisions in game and thats why many times in the 3peat of the Lakers, he was benched. In 2008, he took a 3 pt shot over 2 defenders when he had 3 good shooters open and he could have driven in to get a better shot for a teammate, a foul or an AND1 situation, yet he took a bad shot &missed. Cost the game
@reneperezz And then how can you say Kb is GOAT, when he has 2 rings as the main guy and 3 behind Shaq?! MJ scored on TMAC, VC, KB, Shaq, Pierce, James Posey and so forth as a 38year old. And remember that Posey was a big reason that the Celts beat the Lakers as Posey held Kb to reasonable numbers. But funny thing is that Posey couldnt stop an aged MJ, but he could contain a prime Kb. saying Mj isnt the GOAt after all the things he has done even after his prime is just ridiculous.
Wow... this is how good MJ is, listen. Before this clip I saw another one of him in 1998. Keep in mind this clip is from 1992 (8 years into the league). In '98, he actually improved since '92! Fourteen years of being in the league, he kept getting better! How many Hall of Fame players can say that about themselves? Amazing...
@balla1314 well Kobe is a individual player who wants to make a name for himself in basketball. It would be pointless trying to break his back and do moves that M.J did in his career. And M.J cant do some of the stuff Kobe does, each player has different talents.
@jimbergalerg yeah i have that game bulls celtics in my favs somewhere, bird hit a crazy amount of shots in a row.. tough loss for the bulls with shaw getting a put back at the buzzer to win the game.
@jimbergalerg Larry Legend i agree greatest pure shooter of alltime.. on the Bird trash talking video they showed him in one of his 3point contest in the final it only showed the first 3 racks but dude cleared those first 3 shooting racks with not a single missed 3.. was all net completely effortless.
@jimbergalerg One thing that always bothered me was how some guys say Bird would not be the same today and all that bs talk etc.. do they relise Larry Bird routinely abused two of the best defenders of alltime in Dennis Rodman & Scottie Pippen LOL they havent't got a clue
@jimbergalerg with todays rules man jordan would cause some havoc on the league, look at how dwade & lebron can attack the lanes right now with these rules..and these guy are not close to the level jordan was on at attack a defense and always finding those gaps. the open lanes no big men camping out, no handchecking or touching/ grabbing on the perimeter.. touch fouls.. jordan would have the time of his life.. look at how many freethrows durant was awarded this season.
@jimbergalerg About the total ban on perimeter handchecking and how it makes things easier for all perimeter players, giving them an extra "step". He specifically mentioned how much better MJ would be in this era.
@jimbergalerg Remember, in 06, despite the "pace" of play, Kobe took 2173 FGs, which was 32.89% of his team's shots that year. Jordan in 86-87, when he averaged 37.1 took 2279 shots which was 31.85% of his team's shots. So Kobe actuallly took a HIGHER % of his team's shots in his 35.4 ppg season. If MJ had taken that same % of his team's shots in 86-87, that would have given him 74 more shots, of which at his same pps would give him 99 pts, upping his avg to 38.3 ppg.
@jimbergalerg i have him top 12 as i havent redone my top 10 players .. right now ive got a top 6 and thats it at the moment.. but im going over all the other players impact dominance efficiency effectivness stats awards championship etc.. and ranking the rest.. kobe will most likely be in my top 10 forsure/definitely, once i go over all of this.
@jimbergalerg True, unless you're the warriors or suns! hah. But you have to balance the style of play against the rules favoring the perimeter offensive player. Did you see Joe Johnson's quotes on the matter last month?
@jimbergalerg Jim, I have Kobe ranked #10 currently, in a tie with Hakeem, although it pains me to do that. I loved Hakeem, and I'm not a Kobe fan. But I can't ignore his resume, and I try to rank all players using the same methodolgy, regardless of how much I like or dislike them.
@jimbergalerg You can't simply make those "pace" translations that way. For example, Jordan averaged 32.5 in 88-89, league wide pace: 100.6
He averaged 32.6 in 92-93, when league wide pace had dropped to: 96.8.
So the pace argument doesn't really hold water. By the way, you mentioned those incredible seasons by Wade and Kobe. How about MJ's 88-91 seasons? 4 years straight of between 31.5 and 35 ppg at TS% of OVER 60% every year. Pretty amazing.
@jimbergalerg Yes, but Jordan took more shots than Kobe as well. Remember, increased volume. As a % of his shots and pts, Jordan scored less from the FT line than Kobe did. And I agree, Kobe's FT attempts should decrease, although with the perimeter defense rules in place these days, you never know! lol
@jimbergalerg We have to remember that the 3PT game was not nearly as much a part of the game in the 80s and early 90s as it is now. The game has shifted more to the perimeter due to rule changes. Kobe has a good TS%, especially for his volume. Kobe takes 19.3 shots per game. Compare to Wade, who takes 18.4 shots per game and has a TS% of .565, a little higher than Kobe.
@jimbergalerg Yep. Exactly. Just FYI, I think Kobe is "probably" the 2nd best SG of all time. I just don't think you can even really begin to make the case that he is as good or better than Jordan was. But he's a hell of a talent, if a nutcase at times. lol
@jimbergalerg It doesn't matter whether Jordan took less 3s than Kobe or not. All of that is already included in EFG% and TS%.
And Kobe actually scores a higher % of his pts off of FTs. A full 25.4% of Kobe's pts come from the FT line. Only 22.9% of MJ's pts came from the charity stripe. Kobe is great, Jordan was just better.
@jimbergalerg You had written, "Kobe's career TS% is 57 while Jordan's is at 58% (rounded)." You either mistyped or were just off. No matter, we can just round to 57 adn 56% respectively. But once again, that is Jordan's CAREER average including his decline in WASH. Kobe's TS% has dropped every year since 06-07, so by the end of his career, it will likely be even lower than it is now.
@jimbergalerg You rounded .569 to 58%? You rounded .557 to 57%? No, you were just off. So, again, Jordan is superior across the board, and this, despite maintaining a higher volume. This is unheard of. Again, Kobe's pps is decreasing (see his pps the last 2 seasons), and his career pps of 1.307 will likely be far lower by the time he retires, paling in comparison to Jordan's 1.316.
@jimbergalerg Once again, here's the thing....even if you think that's "close", Jordan did it on higher volume. Again, typically, as volume increases, efficiency decreases. Jordan not only maintained higher volume than Kobe, but did so with higher efficiency. Unheard of. As well, Jordan's career numbers include his decline in Washington. As kobe ages, his numbers will continue to decline as well.
@jimbergalerg NO. Jordan's TS% is .569, and Kobe's is currently .557. But remember, Jordan's includes his last 2 years in Washington, where his TS was poor. Kobe's TS will continue to drop as he continues to play. Jordan's TS% as a bull was even higher than .569. Kobe's efficiency is around league averag for his career. Jordan's was above the league average. Jordan's pps is 1.316. Kobe's is 1.307 and dropping. The last 2 years it has been WELL below 1.30.
@utfanatic2000 i actually have nothing left to say on this you broke it down so damn well.. theres not much more to add to it, people need to except that kobe is not jordan and never will be as good as jordan... and kobe is on the decline now his peak has gone.
@jimbergalerg Comparing apples to apples, it is no contest.
Jordan's BEST EFG%: .550. Kobe's BEST EFG%: .503. Not even close.
Jordan's AVERAGE EFG%: .509. Kobe's AVERAGE EFG%: .488. Closer, but Jordan still wins.
PLUS, Jordan shot MORE than Kobe. Typically, as volume increases, efficiency decreases. Jordan INCREASED his volume over Kobe while simultaneously increasing efficiency. Unheard of.
but people why every goddamm time i watching my favorite player is videos im always hereing about kobe kobe kobe! kobe ain t no jordan he wish he wassssss
@rjo24 lol "This MJ guy" was lighting up the NBA when Kobe was like 5 or 6 years old. If anything, Kobe reminds you of Jordan, but absolutely not the other way around.
Seriously stop this Kobe VS Jordan argument. This argument is beyond OVER! Jordan > Kobe END OF DISCUSSION! I don't want to hear another comment about how Jordan is better than Kobe. You are just stating the blatantly obvious.
this was a pretty big explosion from Jordan. he only scored 2 points in the first Q, 12 mins. then 54 pts in 31 mins the rest of the game(he sat 5 mins during that time)
I like to think Michael's career was divided into two phases, high-flying Michael, and jump shooting michael. In 1992 was the only year you saw both. Michael's game was evolving into fadeway jump shots. He still would drive the lane but he would pick his spots and rely more on jump shooting.
@daGOATmj23 defenses are better today than they were in the 90's...yes, according to the rules, you can't hand check anymore, but the refs let most players get away with it...and there's also the zone Defense, which Jordan didn't have to contend with in his days...your comments make you sound uneducated...
@conni70 The only persons comments that sound uneducated are yours. But don't worry im about to educate you right now, first i will show you a current nba player Joe Johnsons comments on what its like to play in the league now, under these rules with no handchecking. Then i post quotes and video links for you tpo read & watch destroying the jordan didnt face zones BS... im about to take you school kid.
@conni70 "It benefits me," said Joe Johnson, one of three players (Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford are the others) on the Hawks' roster who have averaged 20 or more points in a season. "It definitely changes the game because it gives every guy that extra step. "If we could hand check now, the game would be totally different," Johnson said.
@conni70 "If they couldn't hand check back in the day, there are some guys that would have been even better than they were. It would have been nuts for some of the big-time scorers and perimeter players from the 1980s and 1990s. Can you imagine what [Michael] Jordan would have done in a league where you couldn't hand check."
@conni70 "Last season, Jordan had to [overcome] the harassment of [zone traps] and [double & triple teaming] to win the scoring title by averaging 37.1 points a game"
-- NY Times, Nov 4, 1987
"[Zones] were also used [frequently] [before] they were [legalized] as well. One example, the 80s Celtics were known [users] of it and always got away with it. These are the same Celtics Jordan destroyed from an individual standpoint."
@conni70 "Don't give me the old 'players deal with zone now' crap. Watch Bird & Magic in the '80s, they played a [free-safety zone] against everyone and it [never] got called. If pre-baseball MJ played [now], they'd have to [change the rules] to make it more [even]"
@conni70 "Zone defenses are [rarely used] in the NBA for a [number] of reasons. Because of the [defensive 3-sec rule], the NBA [does not allow] a [true] zone as post defenders are [not allowed] to just [park themselves in the paint]. Beyond that, it is [viewed] as a [gimmick] among players & coaching personnel."
-- Jonathan Abrams, NBA Reporter for NY Times; "Talk to the Newsroom: NBA Reporter"; May 10, 2009
@conni70 "The committee instituted a 3-second rule for defenders in order to [prevent] teams from [parking taller players] in the post. The goal was to [free the lanes] & [encourage] cuts & drives through the paint. With those changes, among other factors, offenses have [opened up] & scoring has [climbed]."
@conni70 "If you ever wondered [how] Steve Nash played for eight years & [never] even made 2nd-team All-NBA, then [became] a 2-time MVP in the blink of an eye, it [wasn't] because of his hair & skin color. Nash [took advantage] of the aforementioned [new rules] that [made] penetrating guards [just as valuable] as reliable low-post scorers."
-- Bill Simmons ESPN Page 2; "Installing the NBA Upgrade", May 17, 2006
@conni70 "When we [disallowed] the use of the [hand] & [forearm] to the [body], the defensive 3-second rule in [conjunction] with the [hand check] interpretation, [gave] offensive players on the [perimeter], [more] offensive freedom]."
-- Stu Jackson; NBA Exec. VP of Operations; "Season Review with Stu Jackson", May 5, 2007
@conni70 Results of the rule changes: ''B4 the defensive rules changed, there were ONLY 3 wing players in the Top 10 in Scoring avg'n AT LEAST 23ppg. After the rules changed, that # JUMPED to 11, and they had a 23% INCREASE in scoring & a 4% INCREASE in FG%. So where in the hell were all of these 25-30ppg scoring wing players B4 the rules changed?''
@conni70 Three videos you should watch of Jordan facing every type of defense yes ZONES which you are about to see, traps, doubles, triples, extremely physical plays, handchecking, big men camping in the lanes :
Good call. Miami was a weak defensive team back then, they were just happy to reach the playoffs at all for the first time in their history as an eight seed. I'm pretty sure that Kobe would try to score more than 56 in this game as well; he likes to shit on weak teams like the Raptors or Knicks, even when the game is already decided. He is that kind of guy.
I'm also sure that Kobe would heavily struggle against the extremely physical defense of the Knicks in the second round of these playoffs and, ultimately, lose the series. I suggest you watch the games for yourself so that you can learn a thing or two about great defense and playoff intensity, tjhunt76 has the whole series on his channel. Full games. Not a biased 10 min edit.
What I do know is that Jordan was 10 times the leader that Kobe is. Bryant can copy his moves, his gestures, facial expressions and speech patterns. He can even shave his head, put on the #23 Bulls jersey in front of a mirror and pretent to be Jordan himself (pretty sure he did that already). But he can't copy his leadership and heart. Jordan is a guy you probably do not like that much if you're on his team (just like Bryant), but he is the one you would follow into a war.
I trust Jordan under extreme pressure, in real playoff battles, a lot more than I trust Bryant. Kobe is too much of a bitch when the calls don't go his way, and there are times when he looks like he's at his wits' end, like last years Finals against the Celtics, when he became a one-dimensional chucker and didn't do much else. Maybe in a couple years, when Kobe is retired and you're a little older and (gasp!) wiser, you'll be able to see that as well.
lol kobe who?? Oh!! the guy in the lakers team who pretends to be like jordan? who tried to play like Jordan and the team saved his ass in the 09 playoffs? who loves to elbow people? whose FG% sucks badly against the non-physical, shitty defences of today's NBA? What was his name again?
@KB42PAH Weak defense? Ironic statement, since far more of Kobe's 50+ pt games come against poor teams and poor defenses than did Jordan's. But we needn't concern ourselves with this question, because once Kobe reaches the better teams and defenses of the playoffs, he has only dropped 50 once, against the horrid Suns defense. Jordan scored on ALL defenses, including 54 in the 93 playoffs against the #1 ranked Knicks defense. Kobe can't sniff that. Jordan GOAT.

Factor that in along WITH handchecking and that makes it a tougher era than today by far.

everyone says tha mj is truly the best, i dont quite really agree to that. but i agree he's totaly an outstanding player. he did win 6 rings. but he didnt do i alone. i mean without rodman, phil and pippen? can he do it? probably, but we dont know. pippen is a great factor to chicago before. anyway for me the best is olajuwon. why? he wins all the way to finals all by himself. no pippen, no shaq, no star player by his side he just did it, all by him self. yet he doesnt get too much credit.
blitsziro 5 months ago
@blitsziro Really Olajuwon did it by himself, really. You don't know Basketball my friend.
XKiDCraZyX 4 months ago
@XKiDCraZyX well yeah, i mean take a look at his team. does he have a real good team mates? consistent has, but not as good as pippen, shaq, gasol, kobe and etc.. besides i give credit to him as a fan. that would never changed. as for u, i guess u dont know what being a big fan is. btw did mj did it all by him self?
blitsziro 4 months ago
@blitsziro *SMH* Drexler, Horry, Smith. Yeah they are not as good Pippen, Shaq, Gasol, and Kobe but take the Mavericks for example. There "only" good palyer is Dirk right? So he won the ring by himself right? No because he still had Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, Tyson Chandler. Not as good as the others but they didn't have to be because of Dirk. Oh yeah and this is coming from someone who has lived in Houston during their glory days and a fan. XD
XKiDCraZyX 4 months ago
@XKiDCraZyX as for dirk thats true, but i dont give credit for terry and chandler. but for barrea and kid. the thing is its all on dirks hard work. without dirk. their nothing. ur just recycling what i meant before. yeah right drexle when? that was 1995. what about 1994? horry? my god he's not even a real big help. only consistent. yeah right ur from houston? do i care? no, not even sure if ur telling that u r really from houston before. besides, did olajuwon ever had the credit like shaq?
blitsziro 4 months ago
@blitsziro Same goes for you. Also why does it matter if he gets as much credit as the other ones, all that matters is that he got the ring. And if you really knew anything about basketball you'd know that terry was a big help off the bench and in some of their games scored the most points in the fourth quarter. As for Tyson Chandler, Without him their defense would be garbage. It takes a team to win a championship not just one person so you obviously weren't even born when they won their rings
XKiDCraZyX 4 months ago
@XKiDCraZyX i dont care about that.. and pls dont compare dallas to houston before. theres a real big difference to what happen, and do i need to be knowledgeable by being a fan? what ever u say, wont make a changed. its like i said before. olajuwon doesnt get much credit like shaq or jordan. though the thing is, a lot of players especialy jordan and shaq give olajuwon big credits. but for fans, nope they dont give much. so i guess shaq and jordan dont know about bsketbol.
blitsziro 4 months ago
@blitsziro So what does him "not getting" all the credit he deserves make him any better than Jordan. Saying that Olajuwon won both rings by himself is just ignorant. Also I dont need to prove anything to you about being an old time Houston Fan. One thing we can both agree on (and many others) is that Olajuwon was the greatest post player of his time. Hell he'd probably dominate if he was still in shorts.
XKiDCraZyX 4 months ago
@XKiDCraZyX my point is, jordan gets credit from being the guy who wins the ring all by him self. like without him the chicago are worthless. thats not true. when jordan left the chicago made it to the playoffs. like shaq, shaq has more credits than olajuwon. but jordan truly an amazing player, but he still got a real good team mate and a coach. besides, u may not give credit olajuwon as i do. but jordan and shaq, gives olajuwon the credit like i do.

I'd just wanna know how many times MJ scores over 50 pts in a playoff-game and how many players score 50pts+ just once in a playoff game.
MJ is just over everybody from past to now, to the future.

@bartime100 MJ scored 50+ points 8 times in the playoffs (including finals)
uberathlete 7 months ago
@bartime100
MJ: 8 times(all-time leader)
Wilt Chamberlain: 4(highest point in a game is 56)
Allen Iverson: 3
After Jordan retired from Chicago Bulls, 50-point games in playoffs have happened "8" more times ( Iverson 3, Malone 1, Carter 1, Nowitzki 1, Kobe 1, Ray Allen 1.)
Jordan = Iverson + Malone + VC + Dirk + Kobe + Ray Allen
There is Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us.

I was. tp23ful 1 year ago
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@tp23ful And I am a fan of the game. Nowadays the game has devolved in terms of basketball toughness & strategy. You got players who cant shoot jump shots & yet be a valuable guard. A guard that cant shoot a jumpshot is ridiculous (Rondo). Dwight Howard can rebound, dunk and doa hook shot and has no further range. Vince Carter cant do anything in the clutch & is inconsistent in games. And thats with no handchecking and a defensive 3 second rule to make it easier to score.
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@tp23ful Now u got all these average players scoring 30 pt games and getting triple doubles and yet they cant even shoot. Any hard kind of foul is called a flagrant nowadays. You cant even body up like u used to. In highschool and college, they teach u to body up and play hard defense, yet in the NBA they make u play defense without touching the offensive player on the perimeter. I mean seriously, the game is supposed to evolve and yet here we are with rules to make it easier,

@reneperezz Don't talk shit! Kobe isn't even in the top10 best basketball players ever. There are many basketball player in the past who where better than Kobe Bryant! Magic and Bird where 2 of them. And MJ is untouchable!!
vuongph 1 year ago
@reneperezz Its the opposite. Kb is hyped up so much. Clutch MJ is way better. Last nite, KB got the ball stolen and Clipeprs scored to help seal the game. Not only that, explain a 38-40 yr old MJ scoring 40+ and 50+ pt games against these supposedly better players. Sure some athletes are physically better these days, but there are a lot of NBA palyers that arent as smart in basketball tactics. Kb still takes a 3pt shot over 2 defenders for the win when he has 3 open shooters And he missed
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@reneperezz Even tho players like Kb and Mj can make those 3pt shots over 2 players and have a higher fg% than most players, that is still not hte smartest play to make. Drive the ball in and you either open up a shot for ur teammates, get a foul or get an AND1 situation. So even tho players may be more physically gifted, they are not smarter basketball players. The league even made rules to make it easier for players to score so that they could ty and get anohter Mj in kb, but its not working
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@reneperezz Even Magic Johnson has stated that Mj could score 45+pts in todays game and that Mj is the GOAT. Realzie that Kobe is not a player that plays to win, Kobe plays for the glory. Players like MJ, Bird and Magic were palyers who always played to win. They played to beat the other competitors. Kobe is there for the glory. Even Lebron is only concerned with his legacy and not firstly on winning. thats where the game has changed and why many dont watch the game nowadays.
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@reneperezz The game used to be about winning, but now its all about STATS, RECORDS and LEGACY. Players before played to win and let their games speak for themselves. U've seen Kb make horrib;e decisions in game and thats why many times in the 3peat of the Lakers, he was benched. In 2008, he took a 3 pt shot over 2 defenders when he had 3 good shooters open and he could have driven in to get a better shot for a teammate, a foul or an AND1 situation, yet he took a bad shot &missed. Cost the game
Shermstyle23 1 year ago
@reneperezz And then how can you say Kb is GOAT, when he has 2 rings as the main guy and 3 behind Shaq?! MJ scored on TMAC, VC, KB, Shaq, Pierce, James Posey and so forth as a 38year old. And remember that Posey was a big reason that the Celts beat the Lakers as Posey held Kb to reasonable numbers. But funny thing is that Posey couldnt stop an aged MJ, but he could contain a prime Kb. saying Mj isnt the GOAt after all the things he has done even after his prime is just ridiculous.
Shermstyle23 1 year ago 3
@Shermstyle23 Funny when some folks say Kobe is GOAT. That's like totally disrespecting Magic, Larry Bird, Russel, etc.

@jimbergalerg great points right there and that one of the reasons why my top 3 alltime is jordan kareem & wilt.
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg with todays rules man jordan would cause some havoc on the league, look at how dwade & lebron can attack the lanes right now with these rules..and these guy are not close to the level jordan was on at attack a defense and always finding those gaps. the open lanes no big men camping out, no handchecking or touching/ grabbing on the perimeter.. touch fouls.. jordan would have the time of his life.. look at how many freethrows durant was awarded this season.
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg About the total ban on perimeter handchecking and how it makes things easier for all perimeter players, giving them an extra "step". He specifically mentioned how much better MJ would be in this era.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg I generally agree, although I'm not sure he can crack top 3. Will be interesting to watch though!
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Remember, in 06, despite the "pace" of play, Kobe took 2173 FGs, which was 32.89% of his team's shots that year. Jordan in 86-87, when he averaged 37.1 took 2279 shots which was 31.85% of his team's shots. So Kobe actuallly took a HIGHER % of his team's shots in his 35.4 ppg season. If MJ had taken that same % of his team's shots in 86-87, that would have given him 74 more shots, of which at his same pps would give him 99 pts, upping his avg to 38.3 ppg.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg and just from looking at it right now id have him at number 10 alltime
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg i have him top 12 as i havent redone my top 10 players .. right now ive got a top 6 and thats it at the moment.. but im going over all the other players impact dominance efficiency effectivness stats awards championship etc.. and ranking the rest.. kobe will most likely be in my top 10 forsure/definitely, once i go over all of this.
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg True, unless you're the warriors or suns! hah. But you have to balance the style of play against the rules favoring the perimeter offensive player. Did you see Joe Johnson's quotes on the matter last month?
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Jim, I have Kobe ranked #10 currently, in a tie with Hakeem, although it pains me to do that. I loved Hakeem, and I'm not a Kobe fan. But I can't ignore his resume, and I try to rank all players using the same methodolgy, regardless of how much I like or dislike them.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg You can't simply make those "pace" translations that way. For example, Jordan averaged 32.5 in 88-89, league wide pace: 100.6
He averaged 32.6 in 92-93, when league wide pace had dropped to: 96.8.
So the pace argument doesn't really hold water. By the way, you mentioned those incredible seasons by Wade and Kobe. How about MJ's 88-91 seasons? 4 years straight of between 31.5 and 35 ppg at TS% of OVER 60% every year. Pretty amazing.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Agreed. I think we probably agree more about this than we disagree actually.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Im not deny Kobes a great player hes 2nd best shooting guard of alltime, top 12 alltime player also. But hes not MJ and never will be.
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Yes, but Jordan took more shots than Kobe as well. Remember, increased volume. As a % of his shots and pts, Jordan scored less from the FT line than Kobe did. And I agree, Kobe's FT attempts should decrease, although with the perimeter defense rules in place these days, you never know! lol
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg We have to remember that the 3PT game was not nearly as much a part of the game in the 80s and early 90s as it is now. The game has shifted more to the perimeter due to rule changes. Kobe has a good TS%, especially for his volume. Kobe takes 19.3 shots per game. Compare to Wade, who takes 18.4 shots per game and has a TS% of .565, a little higher than Kobe.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Yep. Exactly. Just FYI, I think Kobe is "probably" the 2nd best SG of all time. I just don't think you can even really begin to make the case that he is as good or better than Jordan was. But he's a hell of a talent, if a nutcase at times. lol
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg You are right. Kobe's peak PPS was in 06-07 when it was 1.383.
Jordan's peak PPS was in 88-89 at 1.467. Quite a bit better.
Kobe DID have 2 great series vs. Utah and Pho, but then both of those defenses were pretty awful.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg It doesn't matter whether Jordan took less 3s than Kobe or not. All of that is already included in EFG% and TS%.
And Kobe actually scores a higher % of his pts off of FTs. A full 25.4% of Kobe's pts come from the FT line. Only 22.9% of MJ's pts came from the charity stripe. Kobe is great, Jordan was just better.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg You had written, "Kobe's career TS% is 57 while Jordan's is at 58% (rounded)." You either mistyped or were just off. No matter, we can just round to 57 adn 56% respectively. But once again, that is Jordan's CAREER average including his decline in WASH. Kobe's TS% has dropped every year since 06-07, so by the end of his career, it will likely be even lower than it is now.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg You rounded .569 to 58%? You rounded .557 to 57%? No, you were just off. So, again, Jordan is superior across the board, and this, despite maintaining a higher volume. This is unheard of. Again, Kobe's pps is decreasing (see his pps the last 2 seasons), and his career pps of 1.307 will likely be far lower by the time he retires, paling in comparison to Jordan's 1.316.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Once again, here's the thing....even if you think that's "close", Jordan did it on higher volume. Again, typically, as volume increases, efficiency decreases. Jordan not only maintained higher volume than Kobe, but did so with higher efficiency. Unheard of. As well, Jordan's career numbers include his decline in Washington. As kobe ages, his numbers will continue to decline as well.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg NO. Jordan's TS% is .569, and Kobe's is currently .557. But remember, Jordan's includes his last 2 years in Washington, where his TS was poor. Kobe's TS will continue to drop as he continues to play. Jordan's TS% as a bull was even higher than .569. Kobe's efficiency is around league averag for his career. Jordan's was above the league average. Jordan's pps is 1.316. Kobe's is 1.307 and dropping. The last 2 years it has been WELL below 1.30.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@utfanatic2000 i actually have nothing left to say on this you broke it down so damn well.. theres not much more to add to it, people need to except that kobe is not jordan and never will be as good as jordan... and kobe is on the decline now his peak has gone.
falkner23 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg Comparing apples to apples, it is no contest.
Jordan's BEST EFG%: .550. Kobe's BEST EFG%: .503. Not even close.
Jordan's AVERAGE EFG%: .509. Kobe's AVERAGE EFG%: .488. Closer, but Jordan still wins.
PLUS, Jordan shot MORE than Kobe. Typically, as volume increases, efficiency decreases. Jordan INCREASED his volume over Kobe while simultaneously increasing efficiency. Unheard of.
utfanatic2000 1 year ago
@jimbergalerg You aren't making any sense. Kobe's EFG% the last 3 seasons: .503, .502, .488. His best ever is .503.
Jordan's EFG% during the first 3PEAT: .547, .526, .515.
Jordan's WORST EFG% during the first 3PEAT is better than Kobe's BEST EFG% EVER! LMAO.
And Jordan's best EFG% ever puts Kobe's to shame.
Kobe DOES rely on the refs to bail him out more than Jordan though, so a higher % of Kobe's pts come from the charity stripe.

A younger sounding Tony! Did he say his famous "bottoms up" in this game when someone scored? lol
cabgt 2 years ago
Actually, I think that might be Eric Reid. Eric and Tony are still with the Heat broadcasting booth today.
bigdaddymatty17 2 years ago
hey do you have all the playoff games for each of the championship years?
h0opman31 2 years ago
I like to think Michael's career was divided into two phases, high-flying Michael, and jump shooting michael. In 1992 was the only year you saw both. Michael's game was evolving into fadeway jump shots. He still would drive the lane but he would pick his spots and rely more on jump shooting.
illinifan512 2 years ago 6
Agree totally. I split mj's career into 2 parts. Air time/drives and jump shooting/post ups.

Kobe wouldn't last against 90's defense
daGOATmj23 2 years ago 18
@daGOATmj23 they were at least 2-3 excellent player per team in the 90s, great competition.

@daGOATmj23 : You are right ! Kobe playing against the Bad Boys or the Knicks! Nah
evangelistdthompson 1 year ago
@daGOATmj23 defenses are better today than they were in the 90's...yes, according to the rules, you can't hand check anymore, but the refs let most players get away with it...and there's also the zone Defense, which Jordan didn't have to contend with in his days...your comments make you sound uneducated...
conni70 1 year ago

"If we could hand check now, the game would be totally different," Johnson said.
falkner23 1 year ago
@conni70 "If they couldn't hand check back in the day, there are some guys that would have been even better than they were. It would have been nuts for some of the big-time scorers and perimeter players from the 1980s and 1990s. Can you imagine what [Michael] Jordan would have done in a league where you couldn't hand check."
falkner23 1 year ago
@conni70 "Last season, Jordan had to [overcome] the harassment of [zone traps] and [double & triple teaming] to win the scoring title by averaging 37.1 points a game"
-- NY Times, Nov 4, 1987
"[Zones] were also used [frequently] [before] they were [legalized] as well. One example, the 80s Celtics were known [users] of it and always got away with it. These are the same Celtics Jordan destroyed from an individual standpoint."
-- NY Times, Feb 29, 2009

-- Jonathan Abrams, NBA Reporter for NY Times; "Talk to the Newsroom: NBA Reporter"; May 10, 2009
falkner23 1 year ago
@conni70 "The committee instituted a 3-second rule for defenders in order to [prevent] teams from [parking taller players] in the post. The goal was to [free the lanes] & [encourage] cuts & drives through the paint. With those changes, among other factors, offenses have [opened up] & scoring has [climbed]."
-- NY Times, Feb 29, 2009

@conni70 "If you ever wondered [how] Steve Nash played for eight years & [never] even made 2nd-team All-NBA, then [became] a 2-time MVP in the blink of an eye, it [wasn't] because of his hair & skin color. Nash [took advantage] of the aforementioned [new rules] that [made] penetrating guards [just as valuable] as reliable low-post scorers."

@conni70 "When we [disallowed] the use of the [hand] & [forearm] to the [body], the defensive 3-second rule in [conjunction] with the [hand check] interpretation, [gave] offensive players on the [perimeter], [more] offensive freedom]."

NOWHERE!!

He is that kind of guy.
kOrOne79 2 years ago 5
I'm also sure that Kobe would heavily struggle against the extremely physical defense of the Knicks in the second round of these playoffs and, ultimately, lose the series. I suggest you watch the games for yourself so that you can learn a thing or two about great defense and playoff intensity, tjhunt76 has the whole series on his channel. Full games. Not a biased 10 min edit.
kOrOne79 2 years ago 6
What I do know is that Jordan was 10 times the leader that Kobe is. Bryant can copy his moves, his gestures, facial expressions and speech patterns. He can even shave his head, put on the #23 Bulls jersey in front of a mirror and pretent to be Jordan himself (pretty sure he did that already). But he can't copy his leadership and heart. Jordan is a guy you probably do not like that much if you're on his team (just like Bryant), but he is the one you would follow into a war.
kOrOne79 2 years ago 6
I trust Jordan under extreme pressure, in real playoff battles, a lot more than I trust Bryant. Kobe is too much of a bitch when the calls don't go his way, and there are times when he looks like he's at his wits' end, like last years Finals against the Celtics, when he became a one-dimensional chucker and didn't do much else. Maybe in a couple years, when Kobe is retired and you're a little older and (gasp!) wiser, you'll be able to see that as well.
kOrOne79 2 years ago 6
Kobe has only ever had one 50 point playoff game...

lol kobe who?? Oh!! the guy in the lakers team who pretends to be like jordan? who tried to play like Jordan and the team saved his ass in the 09 playoffs? who loves to elbow people? whose FG% sucks badly against the non-physical, shitty defences of today's NBA? What was his name again?

@KB42PAH Weak defense? Ironic statement, since far more of Kobe's 50+ pt games come against poor teams and poor defenses than did Jordan's. But we needn't concern ourselves with this question, because once Kobe reaches the better teams and defenses of the playoffs, he has only dropped 50 once, against the horrid Suns defense. Jordan scored on ALL defenses, including 54 in the 93 playoffs against the #1 ranked Knicks defense. Kobe can't sniff that. Jordan GOAT.
