Lovely, just lovely. When it moved to NBC someone f----d with the opening and closings and ruined it. I've always noticed for the most part that when someone changes a show's theme for the worst the show itself also goes to s--t.
Sorry for all the language -- daytime wouldnt' be in the mess it is today if some TV execs would just look at some recent history...
@TimsDale4ever . . . I couldn't agree with you more. No need to apologize for the profanity. You hit the nail right on the head. If the truth be known the only reason that I'm on YouTube is for the soap themes. I'm serious. I totally miss this theme . . . I cried and was so upset when this theme was dropped in late 1981 for that pseudo-Chuck Mangione burgundy-backround colored theme/format.
@softwater88 I agree, this theme is so beautiful. And so is the one before it - same melody but with a piano. They should have left it alone, even if they were switching networks. I'm sure the TV execs could have came to some kind of agreement. And yes, the pseudo-Chuck Mangione theme was was totally lame. And the one in 1986 was even worse as it was total crap! This one and the one from 1974-80 are most beautiful.
@TimsDale4ever I totally agree with you 100%. And personally, I don't think you used any profanity - you bleeped it out. Your frustration and annoyance as to why someone would get rid of this beautiful theme in exchange for a crappy theme is totally understandable. Of course, I was only 8 years old when this took place and I remember being annoyed as I basically didn't adjust well to change.
Thank you for providing this theme!! For years I tried re-calling how this theme went (from nearly 30 years ago). Listening to it now I feel like a kid again. Does anybody per chance have the full length 2 minutes plus version?
I absolutely loved this theme. What a near tragedy when it stopped being used in late 1981! I thought that this theme was lost forever. Thank you for posting. I can't thank you enough, I'm serious ! ! Yeah I'm real familiar with The Real World. There was Andre, Norm, Julie, Eric, Heather, Kevin, and that one bohemian chick who got into an argument with Kevin. Especially its first season in 1991 or 1992-ish>
Notice that the late Mary-Ellis Bunim was producer. She and Jonathan Murray formed Bunim-Murray Productions in 1991. Anyone familiar with The Real World?
I noticed that Billie Lou Watt is still listed in the credits. Does anyone have any clips of the late, great Billie Lou Watt in any SFT episodes? I've heard her voice in SO many cartoons, but I've never actually seen her act before. Help!
@stopthemachine Billie Lou Watt was in SFT for quite a while, from 1968 until 1981. This is also the era that had a lot of videos wiped so finding her may be a challenge! Good luck to you!
This clip must have been in the early part of 1981 before CBS moved the show to 2:30/1:30 CT. Y&R followed Search for only a brief time in 1980-81. Affiliates wanted the half hour access break at 1pm/Noon CT again so CBS moved Y&R on June 6, 1981, allowing stations to air it at Noon/11am or 12:30/11:30.
Plus the show came on around the noon time hour (at least in Los Angeles where I grew up) thus competiting with other local affiliates' news programming. Plus I think CBS was looking to dump SFT anyway thus not having a need to expand the show. Just a theory :)
I bet when NBC picked up this soap at March of 1982-these credits are still used until August of 1982. I bet the announcer said "This has been 'Search for Tommorrow'-and stay tuned for 'Days of our Lives'-next on most of these NBC stations-This Program was Recorded.".
Sadly, that wasn't true. Dwight Wiest, the announcer here, was replaced by a female voice, they revamped the opening title sequence to a Chuck Mangione-esque theme and that was used from it's last days on CBS, to most of it's time on NBC. The theme was changed for the last time on NBC, along with the title sequence, and then the show ended in 1986.
CBS was the only network I remember that used the "Stay tuned for (next show) on most of these CBS stations". ABC announcers would just say stayed tuned for (next show) on ABC.
I saw a "General Hospital" ending from 1968 when Ed Chandler announced: "Stay tuned for 'Dark Shadows'-next in color-over most of these ABC stations.".
The closing sequence got a revamp, just the same as the opening, in December, 1981. The font used for the credits stayed the same until sometime in 1985.
The font was similar in that kept the same swash flourish; however, the original has more of a gothic look to it and is more yellowish. The one that was used after 1981 is more gold.
My Gramie used to watch this.

Actually it was Monday, June 8, 1981 when Y&R moved back to Noon/11 or 12:30/11:30 and SFT moved to follow ATWT until it moved to NBC in March 1982.

I wonder why this show never got to expand to an hour in the 70s when ATWT and GL did. I guess the ratings weren't high enough maybe.
jmsweat 3 years ago
Yeah I wonder once NBC picked it up, if it went to a full hour...
TimothySEnglish 3 years ago
Nope... stayed a 1/2 hour on NBC too

No, they didn't. The announcer was CBS in-house. The only announcer-read copy on NBC promoted an NBC prime time programme.

Like Danny Dark, Casey Kasem, and an only live broadcast announcer from August of 1983: Don Pardo.

Yep...the female announcer, incidentally, was the late Allison Steele, former ON jock for WNEW-FM here in NY.
