I have an alesis dm5 pro and I'm honestly not too happy with the sounds...would you recommend getting the td3 module and using the dm5 pro pads to trigger?
ping is there wood block, I don't think is there. All sounds are a part of at least one kit, watch my preview video, maybe the sounds you're looking for are there...
it is wrong for you to say that acoustic drum kits are the best way to play drums, because it is just an opinion on what you prefer. just because you probably play a acoustic doesn't mean it is best.
the early td3 came with the configuration that you said. the one I bought in 2007 is the same as what you said but with one more tom pad (three toms total). Honestly I don't think it's a good trade, but if you need the space or a quieter set, then you gotta do what you gotta do.
Okay so i'm trading a set of pearl exports with ride, crash, hi hats, in real good condition for this guy's Roland TD3 that he bought in 2004. Is this a good trade? Does the TD3 only come with the snare pad, 2 tom pads, 2 cymbal pads, hi hat (pad/pedal), and bass drum? He said something about adding on but i didnt understand him. Anyone??
really? all in one package? i was told that the bass pedal wasn't included. so are there different types of bundles? or just the one that has all of that?
oh, no bass pedal. sorry. but make a deal with the store person, if its like used. but if its new dont. lol.. i got a free throne and like sticks when i bought mine. which is like total 70 bucks worth. bass pedals are cheap, not really. depends.. if you dont want to pay for one.. buy an Roland HD1, you can even use double bass for that.
I don't know man, I just set it on kit 12 and started recording. I know that acoustic toms have that ring problem, if that's your case, then you need to buy some tape and stick it on the skin. If not, I don't know what-a the problem is.
dude, the guy right before me asked basically the same question... The ride is 2 zone, edge + bow, if you want to get the bell sound, hit the bow harder.
Hello PLdrummer. I have a question about this kit. Do you have to hit the ride bell to get that bell sound or you have to hit the ride harder? I am confused about that. I think you hit the bell on HD-1 for that and it would be kinda strange if this doesn't work on this kit.
no.. it was about 800-900 euros without the stools and pedals and amps. What i got was: the set (has hi-hat pedal, module and the stand included), the stool, the pedal. Which was about 1100 euros.. i guess in us dollars that's about 1400$ or something like that.. but i tell you, it's worth it!
I can't post a link, but go to my other video "Preview..." and there is a link to roland's website where you will find two videos that talk about the module.
no customization, or any modifications. Kit is no. 12; "standard". A factory reset might fix the problem. If you don't know, to reset you have to hold the + and - at the same time, and then turn the module on, then let go of the buttons and press and hold "drum kit".
Hi! Please tell which kit/settings you're using here - your kit sound very good indeed! I just got mine second hand, and i think the settings are all messed up - I think I'll do a factory reset. But please tell which kit you're using, and if you've customized it and in what way?
what double bass pedal? I don't have one... But I think they are like $90 and up. It is good for a DB pedal. Yes it has different sounds, please watch my "preview" video. Yes, you can plug in an mp3 player in, the cable is even included. Nein, you cannot record your playing within the module, you have to make some arrangements to record it with either your computer or another way.
yes, there is enough room on the pad for two beaters, but because neither of them will be hitting the center of the pad you will have to turn the sensitivity up a little.
I have been quite happy with the drums, though the hi-hat pedal is a bit of a disappointment. It isn't particularly realistic in the way it triggers open and closed hi hat sounds, requiring the pedal to be all the way down to achieve a closed hi hat sound. Unfortunately there isn't an "in-between" sound on the TD3 in this critical area.
yeah, that's definitely not true. Also, yes I did get better, but I'm not sure about making another video on that, but I probably will do a video on that hihat thing.
Thanx man! I was at musicians friend yesterday and most of the complaints this drum kit received was that the hihat could only make an open or closed sound. For me that was a letdown but now that you tell me this then... AWESOME!
Thank you really. Oh and, I suppose you have improved since you made this video right? Then why don't you make another video showing you improved skills?
no, none of the pads have 3 zones. All of the pads are dual zone with the exception of the kick drum pad, although the toms can only trigger one sample.
How good is the hi hat controller? (As in: Does it have an in between "medium open" sound as you are lifting your foot?) Or is it just "open and closed"?
Thanks for the speedy reply man! yea you're right about needing space to be loose but my small apartment and huge collection of random crap and decks won't allow it! I've been playing kit for about ten years but need to switch to Vdrums if I want to play on a daily basis, so I may have to retrain myself into a smaller posture! Cheers for the dimensions, I reckon I could get them into the window frame area/ish if I get rid of one armchair. Nice one!
Hey man, Nice demo, Just wondering what the dimensions are of the rack? I have very little space in which to cram whatever kit I buy into, the Roland HD1 would probably fit but I really want the TD-3, what do you reckon is the smallest it could be condensed to whilst still being playable? Thanks in Advance!
The smallest space when it is set up properly is somewhere around: 2ft deep, 4.5ft wide, 5ft tall. If you condense it you could probably shave a foot of off width and height, but remember, playing an instrument is all about being relaxed and loose, if you cram your set too much you are not going to enjoy playing it, playing it will probably be very uncomfortable and awkward.
(i don't know if you've been playing before, so forgiveness, please if i seem to be a smart -ass (arse))
Hey! Umm i was wondering... Can you upgrade the snare of the td3 for a PD-85, for example, or do you have to use the one that the td3 has? And, can you put a TD-9 sound module to the td-3?
I would say it's pretty good. I haven't been exactly gentle with my set, and it's holding up nicely.
The quality?
When I connect my Bose Triports to it it sounds very pure and overall excellent. Of course, if you connect it to some crap shack, you will get the sound only as good as the speakers are.
I will do it on tuesday. But since I don't play all the genres of music that the module has the sets for, I will most likely just play the preview for all of them. Either way, you will hear them.
I don't think I will, but there are a couple of videos on youtube with johnny rabb demonstrating a couple of them. Also, he made a video demo of the TD3, you can watch it on roland's website.
Are there more than one different kits you can switch the "Brain" to? And about how portable is the set, can I pack it up and bring it up the street and set it up easily? Thanks! ~ACardFan
there are 32 unique drum sets in the module. The set is as big as you see it here. You can play with the fasteners and move the rack around and you could probably fold it into a relatively small package, I would say... 2' deep, 3' wide and 4' tall.
td3's a nice kit i brought one with some extra money flow i got just recived it today at first i wasnt to impressed but after u play on it for a bit it gets better and better . i recomend this set aswell :D ive used all its fetured created a couple of kits etc etc hit works as a DB if ur to broke to get a db pedal. but ur better off using a DB pedal rather than the high hat pedal. ill be upgrading to eather another tom or a nother crash/ride
So would you recommend this set for someone who lives in an apartment building? I mean I have the headphones and such but like do you for sure need an amp to allow external sound? Does the set itself have speakers of its own which you can adjust the volume to?
I live in an apartment building and no noise complaints yet. There are no speakers on the set, but there is a volume knob that will allow you to change the level of your headphones or an amp/speaker system. Any speaker system with an audio input will work fine, but is some cases you will need to visit a radioshack for the proper adapter (~$5) (I get external sound from my stereo system with an adaper).
Sorry about the short response before. If you use a 1/4 inch connection (very common on electronic instruments), there are two outputs (stereo (right channel and left), and a headphone output (stereo too, btw) all you need is a cable and you are all set. But if you use a 3.5 mm size jack (the "standard" jack, found on basically all MP3 players), you will need an adapter from Radioshack (for example) and a cable and you will be able to use your amp (there are no 3.5 mm outputs on the module).
It's maybe a stupid question, but do you need to buy an amp to hear the sound (without using headphones) ? If yes, is it expensive ? Also, is it possible to use noise reducer pads (like those they sell on ebay for the game Rock Band) to play during night for example without waking up other people in the house ? Thanks
Yeah, you need an amp, and it is a bit expensive if you want a GOOD amp. You can use a pretty shitty one by Fender, the one that comes in with the Squire. I'm not sure about noise reducer pads, but I'm pretty sure you don't need them. It's not even close to noisy.
i think surely if you can plug head phones in to it then you can probably plug things like computer speakers or other speakers if they have the right jack, just the quality of sound wont be as good as an amp
There is only one spare input and you can use it for whatever you want. But if you really need a lot of cymbals, change the sample on the toms, or get cymbal pads, connect them to the tom input and change the sample.
is there a way to keep the hihat closed without having to hold down on the pedal? i hav 2 tie a tight string around the hihat pedal everytime i wanna do double bass but i no theres gotta be an easier way
you could put a closed hihat sample on the hihat and play without the ability to open it in the kit, but there is no such sample on the module. you can also tweak the sensitivity on the pedal so that it is set to always closed, but I don't know how to do that. You should be able to find something in the manual... Also, why do you want to play it closed, naturally drummers have two feet so you either DB or closed, not both at the same time, and I also think it sounds better. Good luck.
I have the older Roland TD-5 module, and if your foot is on the hi-hat pedal when you turn on the power, it plays as a closed hi-hat until you turn it off. Maybe the TD-3 is the same way.
8/10 Problems? not really, but there are two things I am not too crazy about: one, the ride cymbal is triggered by velocity, not positional triggering, two, in order to get cross stick / rimshot sounds out of the snare drum, you have go into menus and enable it yourself, not a big deal but it is weird that it isn't that way by default. Other than that it works just as you expect it too, its very responsive and gives you a comparable feel to an acoustic set. If you can afford it, go for it.
can you make your own kits, i mean to chose for each like for the snare any snare you want , for the hihat , and the others? can you do that, how are the zone for the ride cymbal work, and the bell? thanx
yeah you can make your own kits. its very simple. the bell is sometimes harder to hit than it should be. and sometimes i find that the hi hat pedal can be a bit delayed
yeah but the hi-hats sometimes work like that for all the electronic kits in general.I know sometimes it doesn't open right when you want to.The only problem as i told you was the bell, because, it was set up i think that when i play an accented note on the ride it took it as a bell, i didn't move to another senzitive zone.
No. The hihat pedal is simply a control device for whatever sample is assigned to the hihat pad. What I mean is that when you assign sounds to pads you can't assign a sound to the pedal, only to the hihat as a whole. you can assign a bass drum sound to the head but the pedal will not generate any sound at all. once again, the pedal is a control device, not a separate instrument. and if you are still like, "this fool is crazys" I am not, I have tried to do that many times with no success.

dude, the guy right before me asked basically the same question... The ride is 2 zone, edge + bow, if you want to get the bell sound, hit the bow harder.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
Hello PLdrummer. I have a question about this kit. Do you have to hit the ride bell to get that bell sound or you have to hit the ride harder? I am confused about that. I think you hit the bell on HD-1 for that and it would be kinda strange if this doesn't work on this kit.
geobalas 3 years ago
yout have to hit it harder, but incidentally, the pad is more sensitive abound the bell area, so you don't have to hit it that much harder.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
Thanks for the information.

PLdrummer 3 years ago
Thank you very much for your response! It is greatly appreciated.

I have the same kit, what amp are you using?
jollywood999 3 years ago
i have no amp, I mostly play with my headphones on, but when I want to share my suckiness with the world, I use my sony stereo system.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
Ah, thanks for replying so fast!

is the snare loud when u hit it, and do u need an amp or can u just play through head phones?
lebronpwns23 3 years ago
no it's not loud, it is actually the quietest pad out of them all. You can play through the headphones.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
how good is the kick drum. Is the sound quality through the TD3 good.
Does the quality decrease when put through an amp/PA system?
scheuregger 3 years ago
I would say it's pretty good. I haven't been exactly gentle with my set, and it's holding up nicely.
The quality?
When I connect my Bose Triports to it it sounds very pure and overall excellent. Of course, if you connect it to some crap shack, you will get the sound only as good as the speakers are.

could u do a video of all 32 drum sets?
please i would really appreciate it
system2030 3 years ago
I will do it on tuesday. But since I don't play all the genres of music that the module has the sets for, I will most likely just play the preview for all of them. Either way, you will hear them.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
I dont like the hi hat
ninjasoccermom 3 years ago
hey, would you like to upload a new video emphasizing on the other drum kit sounds that TD-3 has? I'm just curious about how they sound :P
diwataness 3 years ago
I don't think I will, but there are a couple of videos on youtube with johnny rabb demonstrating a couple of them. Also, he made a video demo of the TD3, you can watch it on roland's website.

Are there more than one different kits you can switch the "Brain" to? And about how portable is the set, can I pack it up and bring it up the street and set it up easily? Thanks! ~ACardFan
ACardFan 3 years ago
there are 32 unique drum sets in the module. The set is as big as you see it here. You can play with the fasteners and move the rack around and you could probably fold it into a relatively small package, I would say... 2' deep, 3' wide and 4' tall.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
Cool... do the toms feel any different when you hit them compared to the snare drum?
ACardFan 3 years ago
snare drum is a lot more tense (bouncy) than the toms
snare drum is "slippery" and the toms are rubber, therefore the stick doesn't slide (doesn't affect my playing)
these are the two differences in feel I could notice.

td3's a nice kit i brought one with some extra money flow i got just recived it today at first i wasnt to impressed but after u play on it for a bit it gets better and better . i recomend this set aswell :D ive used all its fetured created a couple of kits etc etc hit works as a DB if ur to broke to get a db pedal. but ur better off using a DB pedal rather than the high hat pedal. ill be upgrading to eather another tom or a nother crash/ride
mentalm12 3 years ago
hi hat pedal work as a DB pedal *

i have one just got it today i have an acoustic set too but this just awesome i reccomend getting an iron cobra double pedal it works for me
youglymutha 3 years ago
So would you recommend this set for someone who lives in an apartment building? I mean I have the headphones and such but like do you for sure need an amp to allow external sound? Does the set itself have speakers of its own which you can adjust the volume to?
powersphere216 3 years ago
I live in an apartment building and no noise complaints yet. There are no speakers on the set, but there is a volume knob that will allow you to change the level of your headphones or an amp/speaker system. Any speaker system with an audio input will work fine, but is some cases you will need to visit a radioshack for the proper adapter (~$5) (I get external sound from my stereo system with an adaper).

Hey PLdrummer. Can you use a guitar amp for the electric drumset?
BenOttoson 3 years ago
yes.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
Do you use the same chords as plugging a electric guitar up to the amp?
BenOttoson 3 years ago
Sorry about the short response before. If you use a 1/4 inch connection (very common on electronic instruments), there are two outputs (stereo (right channel and left), and a headphone output (stereo too, btw) all you need is a cable and you are all set. But if you use a 3.5 mm size jack (the "standard" jack, found on basically all MP3 players), you will need an adapter from Radioshack (for example) and a cable and you will be able to use your amp (there are no 3.5 mm outputs on the module).
PLdrummer 3 years ago
did u record onto a computer cause theres like no usb plug or anything
ollieman8 3 years ago
I just plugged it in to the microphone jack in my computer and I recorded it from the headphone output.
PLdrummer 3 years ago
theres also a midi in and out but those cables have to go in some usb device or a cable midi-usb but those are like 40 bucks ?
133serge13318 3 years ago
It's maybe a stupid question, but do you need to buy an amp to hear the sound (without using headphones) ? If yes, is it expensive ? Also, is it possible to use noise reducer pads (like those they sell on ebay for the game Rock Band) to play during night for example without waking up other people in the house ? Thanks
stevensk8 4 years ago
Yeah, you need an amp, and it is a bit expensive if you want a GOOD amp. You can use a pretty shitty one by Fender, the one that comes in with the Squire. I'm not sure about noise reducer pads, but I'm pretty sure you don't need them. It's not even close to noisy.
TunaOfTheLand 4 years ago
Thanks! But is it possible to plug the drum set on a computer to hear the sound by the speakers of the computer while playing to the drum ?
stevensk8 4 years ago
Actually, I'm not really sure about that.
TunaOfTheLand 4 years ago
i think surely if you can plug head phones in to it then you can probably plug things like computer speakers or other speakers if they have the right jack, just the quality of sound wont be as good as an amp
jackanakanory 4 years ago
Can u add more cymbals on to this kit or do you just have to leave it as it is?
minibuddy321 4 years ago
There is only one spare input and you can use it for whatever you want. But if you really need a lot of cymbals, change the sample on the toms, or get cymbal pads, connect them to the tom input and change the sample.
PLdrummer 4 years ago
thanks =D

Oh, it sounds so great man! And you have the skill!

It sounds really good for an electric drum kit!
And it isn't expencive.
Mudshower 4 years ago
I think so, too. It sounds much clearer in reality, my recording + editing skills + youtube compression really affect the sound in this video.

is there a way to keep the hihat closed without having to hold down on the pedal? i hav 2 tie a tight string around the hihat pedal everytime i wanna do double bass but i no theres gotta be an easier way
blakefoster937 4 years ago
you could put a closed hihat sample on the hihat and play without the ability to open it in the kit, but there is no such sample on the module. you can also tweak the sensitivity on the pedal so that it is set to always closed, but I don't know how to do that. You should be able to find something in the manual... Also, why do you want to play it closed, naturally drummers have two feet so you either DB or closed, not both at the same time, and I also think it sounds better. Good luck.
PLdrummer 4 years ago
I have the older Roland TD-5 module, and if your foot is on the hi-hat pedal when you turn on the power, it plays as a closed hi-hat until you turn it off. Maybe the TD-3 is the same way.
drumnut001 4 years ago
how would you rate the td3? im thinking of getting one for home practice. Is there any problems i should no about before getting one.
Thnks.
vicfirth18CC 4 years ago
8/10 Problems? not really, but there are two things I am not too crazy about: one, the ride cymbal is triggered by velocity, not positional triggering, two, in order to get cross stick / rimshot sounds out of the snare drum, you have go into menus and enable it yourself, not a big deal but it is weird that it isn't that way by default. Other than that it works just as you expect it too, its very responsive and gives you a comparable feel to an acoustic set. If you can afford it, go for it.
PLdrummer 4 years ago
can you make your own kits, i mean to chose for each like for the snare any snare you want , for the hihat , and the others? can you do that, how are the zone for the ride cymbal work, and the bell? thanx
eddymanro 4 years ago
yeah you can make your own kits. its very simple. the bell is sometimes harder to hit than it should be. and sometimes i find that the hi hat pedal can be a bit delayed
isnowboard4god 4 years ago
yeah but the hi-hats sometimes work like that for all the electronic kits in general.I know sometimes it doesn't open right when you want to.The only problem as i told you was the bell, because, it was set up i think that when i play an accented note on the ride it took it as a bell, i didn't move to another senzitive zone.
eddymanro 4 years ago
Can u change the left pedal to another bass drum ? If its possible , does it feel like the same with the left and right pedal?
jasonboey 4 years ago
PLdrummer 4 years ago
yeah i think you can but its probably easier to just get a double kick
isnowboard4god 4 years ago
