  • Hi classyladybecca, my lovebird layed three eggs two weeks ago. I let her be, so I didnt really check when she started incubating. But a week later, I checked on her again and found seven eggs. Two of them were cracked, I think stepped on. A couple days later, I found five eggs left, as if she had eaten the cracked eggs. Is that healthy, or dangerous (bacteria...)? A day later, I find another cracked egg, this time it isnt eaten. I decided to put it in there. Now she is sitting on her four eggs.

  • @classyladybecca Thank you very much!!! And luckily the two babies are being fed equally ! Hopefully everything will be okay when the other two eggs hatch!!

  • @classyladybecca okay! Thanx much :) gosh...sorry but I have another question..xD umm my birdz second egg hatched and I'm afraid that the elder baby will hog all the food and the new baby won't survive. Wut do u recommend I do? Start hand feeding?

  • @XoXshoyubunnyXoX It's very difficult to handfeed a newly hatched parakeet, and much of the time, not successful. Let the parents feed it for now...if you want to hand-feed, wait at least 2-3 weeks. It's very easy when they are so little to cause them to aspirate, in which case they usually die. In the bird realm, there is indeed a pecking order, and the first born and older ones tend to be the survivors. If your little one is not getting fed, then you want to try to handfeed, that's up to you.

  • @classyladybecca hello again ! Thank you! One more question... How do I get hold of the baby without upsetting the mom?

  • @XoXshoyubunnyXoX Generally, I don't recommend picking up a baby parakeet until it is about a week old. But I use a deep spoon or a ladel and scoop it out, or put a piece of cardboard between the mom and baby to hold the mom back. Chances are, either way, she'll be upset, but that's how you do it without getting bit.

  • Hi :) My birdies egg just hatched today I found a little baby bird when I checked this morning xD but I wnt to to learn how to hand feed the baby. Any advice? N when should I start? Thank you :3

  • @XoXshoyubunnyXoX Hi, normally you should start handfeeding around 2 and 1/2 to 3 weeks of age. It's a big commitment, every 6 hours around the clock. I would look up videos on YouTube to demonstrate. I will be recording a placing one of my own soon. Really read up on it, and be sure that you point the syringe to the baby's right. (Your left if the baby is facing you) That is where the esophagus is. Just watch all the videos you can and read up as much as you can first.

  • hey my bird layed an egg but she layed it in the water so i put it in a nest i bough for them should i have done that

  • @loco24000 Hi, yes, that's fine. Hopefully your hen will find it and incubate it as long as it is fertile. Normally if a hen only lays one or two eggs, they aren't fertile, but let's hope it is! Hope you get babies! :)

  • @classyladybecca i saw her going in there but it just came back out is that not fertile ?

  • @loco24000 You can't tell whether or not an egg is fertile until the parents sit on it for at least around 5 days...a week is better. If they don't sit on it, it won't be incubated, and you won't be able to tell. Hopefully they will incubate it. Sometimes, hens just randomly lay eggs that are not fertile. Be patient with it and check it after it a week old.

  • @classyladybecca ok cuz the hen hasnt sat in them yet shes still laying them she laid one today i found it broken on the cage ):

  • How long does it usually take for the eggs to hatch after they are layed? :3

  • @shinocicada 18 to 21 days

  • @classyladybecca hi. im getting a parakeet soon (female) and i was wondering if she ever laid infertile eggs do i HAVE to take them out of the nesting box/cage or can i just leave them for her to...play with? plz answer this is my first budge :) thx!!

  • @K9girl29 Hi...Parakeets don't normally 'play' with their eggs. You can let her sit on them for awhile, but after a few weeks they will begin to rot. If an egg is turning black inside, you want to throw it out right away or it's going to start smelling. My advice is to throw them out right away if there isn't a male in the cage wtih her. However, if she keeps laying eggs (more than 9) I'd let her sit on them for awhile. They lose calcium with each and you don't want it to get depleted.

  • @classyladybecca thanks alot :D do u think if she does keep laying them i should get her a mate? some people say if they keep on doing it they want a mate

  • @K9girl29 I would get a mate for my bird, yes.

  • Hi, I have a female lovebird that is in a wood nest box and I have some shavings in it....what is the next steps if she lay eggs, how many, how long it takes for lay the eggs, hatch and what do i do to feed and what the little ones ? right now I male lovebird is kind feeding my female outside of the nest.....very cute.....thank you

  • @5WAP Hi, someone flagged your video as spam, so I didn't receive it. I believe lovebird eggs hatch between 18-21 days if I remember right. I don't have lovebirds anymore. The parents will feed the babies, but you can handfeed them

  • hi, my parakeet laid 4 eggs about 2 weeks ago...

but the eggs are crossed between a parrotlet and a parakeet probably. In hope of

being able to see the eggs hatch, we separated the two (we usually separate the

male and female b/c they fight) and draped a blanket over the female's so it's

quieter ( and she'll only sit on them when we drape it). We've left the cage the

same.. some paper towels on the bottom etc.

Are we doing the best for them?

  • @ococohuntero Hi, I'm sorry, your comment was flagged by someone as spam, not sure why, so I missed it! Frankly, I think it's best to leave birds together because the male takes an active part in rearing the chicks, but if they are fighting viciously, then it is necessary to separate them. Please email me at classyladybecca@aol.com. Would love to hear how you made out!

  • hi..me again.your advice was useful but the 2 eggs never hatched. but now there is a new problem... the female laid 3 more eggs and they all hatched, but when the female bird gets out to eat or drink she can't because the male shouts and pokes her until she gets back in the box. what do i do?

  • @laila12384 seperate them just till shes eaten or take her out of the cage feed her and put her back

  • Comment removed

  • please help me, my parakeets laid 2 eggs and last night i found both of them outside. and when i put my hand inside the male always used to bite me but now none of them bite me.

  • @laila12384 You found the eggs outside where? Of the nestbox? They CAN nest outside of the box, so put a cloth under the eggs or put them back in the box.

  • thank u this is very useful. i have a question though. my female is by itself and it layed a few eggs. im wondering if they will hatch.

  • They will not hatch unless she has a male that she mated with, If she just layed these eggs randomly then they will not hatch, this is probably a sign that she wants to breed :]

  • @pinkbettalova Eggs that are not fertilized will not hatch. There has to be a male with the female and they must mate for the eggs to be fertile.

  • boy im on that fly shit!

  • @chaelaun You may touch the eggs, but don't do it much, especially if the hen gets upset. Use clean hands, and put the egg back where you found them.

  • doouse vains mean its alive

  • yes

  • @raquazalmj Veins mean there is a baby growing inside the egg, yes.

  • Thank you. Very helpful.

  • i like ur website teaches me alot witch is infertile and fertile so the one that is dark is fertile and the one that is very light is infertile ty

  • my parakeet laid eggs and was sitting on them for about a month. then today i saw she moved 2 eggs away from one egg. i picked up the singled out egg. it was cracked. out of the other two eggs they weren't see through, but, one was sloshing. she has no nest but this is like the 4th time she does this :/

  • You need to get your bird a nestbox and put some bedding in it so that the eggs don't crack-if you want babies. Becca

  • Getting her a nest box will really help!

  • Does this work for zebra finch eggs too?

  • Sorry for my late response. Yes, this works for zebra finches as well. But they are tiny eggs, so please be careful!

  • FORGET IT!!! My birds have a breeding problem and keep laying hundreds of clutches of infertile eggs for two years, so I've given up on them. only one baby hatched out of all of them. it was the first clutch but it died because it hatched too early and his lungs werent fully developed.

  • maybe u give them good environment so they have lay egg naturaly

  • It's too late, anyway. . . . .that father is so old, he could die any day!
