  • I have to say, I prefer the 2000 version's Pilate, it seems more believable that he's a leader of men, where-as this pilate seems likely placed there by family . Both are interesting, I just prefer the 2000 version's

  • 3:02-4:32 is always painful to watch im grateful 4 u jesus i love u

  • Eli Eli lama Sabachtani .................

  • there was a time when judas recognised jesus and realise that what he did is totally wrong. was there a chance for him to repent? would have jesus forgave him?

  • If you look up Pilate you would find out that he crucified jews for fun and was even punished for the treatment of them, so as this makes for a kick ass scene and story. Thats all it is. He definatly crucified him without question.

  • @19njs In case you haven't noticed, this is a MUSICAL, not a church production. Unless you think that the new testament took place exclusively while wearing leisure suits and Jesus was a white guy with long hair (hint: he wasn't. Caucasians were nowhere near Jerusalem at the time of christ) Not to mention the fact that the bible is hardly a historical text, because for sure, bushes talk in real life and we all came from two people 3,000 years ago.

  • @SillyLitleGirl The bible is historic. It has the whole entire history of the Jewish race, AND it has imporant letters that where sent by schoolars who lived under the opression of the Roman Empire. If that not enough, then the all of the books of the bible where researched and put together by history scholars in church leaders in the early 1000s under the supervision of The Roman empieror himself. To say that the bible isn't 'historic" is a ignorance.

  • @slashofdeath I had written my previous comment in response to someone who claimed that the Bible was to be interpreted literally, which is idiotic. In that sense, I said it was not a historical text, as in, it is mainly a work of fiction. Hell by your standards, the paper used to wipe the asses of ancient Greeks would be historic. Also, please don't call someone ignorant when you don't have any understanding of spelling, grammar or syntax. scholars* that's* emperor* is an*

  • @SillyLitleGirl You really are a silly little girl.. The bible is not a work of Fiction, it is a collect of historic documents pass down and re-copy for thousands of millions of years. It is a book of laws, poems, historic battles, biographies, letters, and prohopesis that have mostly all come true..

And when I call you ignorant, I was refering to this "the bible is hardly a historical text" which is a ignorant statment. The events of the bible.

  • @slashofdeath

For all the airs you put on, you're really quite silly. "Thousands of MILLIONS of years." Eh?

    -Snicker.-

The bible itself claims there are only 6 or so thousand years in human history. Furthermore, the english version that you no doubt read has been heavily edited and changed to the whims of the editor-at-the-time.

    So dumb.

  • this is pretty much Studio 54 in the Desert

  • DIIIEEEEE!!!! IF YOU WANT TO!!

  • When you're forced to kill the son of God, you know you have a sucky job.

  • probably the most dramatic performance in this rock opera movie. .

  • Guys in skimpy purple singlets flogging... totally not homoerotic... <.<

  • this musical confuses me because of the fact the guards have guns

  • Math is an interesting beyond algebra

  • Odd fact. In this time period flogging was a very common punishment. They used a whip that had bits of metal and stuff in it. If you being punished roman law forbid more than 40 strokes. Because it could kill you. So they would often stop at 39 to be safe. However if u were to be nailed to the cross u get beaten until u were near death.

  • Lash the lasher, that's what I say :)

  • i played pilot 30 years ago in a play. How I loved those times :)

  • the music w slow motion is superb in this part

  • 00:50

    FOOT.

  • I've always identified with Pilate. He's the most interesting character in the whole story(Jesus was to one dimensional for my tastes). He tried his best to help Jesus out again & again, to save him from being put to death, but Jesus stubbornly persisted in his delusions & in the end Pilate had little choice.

  • @Chr1551 delusions? that's what we see here on earth... you have no idea. You would have been one of those that mocked Louis Pasteur when he told you there were things you couldn't see that were making you sick. Just because you don't have the power (yet) to see it, doesn't mean it isn't there!

  • this version of this song was so much better than the modern version.. this pilate just had a better ring to him, he had a cheeky tone to his singing and it was enjoyable to watch!

  • he dosn't look like he is in that much pain on the first whip

  • I don't think I've ever seen a better example of a situation spinning out of control.

And in a musical none the less.

  • lol

  • The play version is better

  • I read in the gospel of Nicodemus that Pilot was recalled to Rome and stood before the emperor who said to pilot " you mean to tell me that you had a man in Judea that could give sight to the blind, heal the deaf and dumb, cripples and leprosy, raise the dead, and you crucified him?

  • whoever directed this must hate Jesus with a passion, they cast the most horrible voice for his part.

    Michael Ball ftw.

  • @deutschesmaedchen Haha, "hate Jesus with a passion," I see what you did there.

  • I like Acid King's version more

  • Thats a solid riff

  • Pilate just aches having to do this to Jesus. You can see it in his face, and hear it in his words.I,too felt bad for Pilate.

  • Abbas and Ciaphas were the villians in this, not Pilate, he was just a pawn, the same as Judas, and he knew if Pilate went against the priests, he would have suffered the same fate as Jesus

  • @halogenfox

Well the priests knew that if Caesar heard of someone other than himself being worshiped or thought of as the ultimate being, he would have destroy the Jews. The priests were thinking of their people. Unfortunately, they felt that one man had to die in order to say their people. Their are no villians in this movie/musical, just tragic heros and people who think the ends justify the means

  • 1- 2 -3

  • i weep 4 u

  • give pilate an excuse to murder

  • "We have no king but Caesar." Talk about hypocrisy, the romans and by extension Tiberius Caesar were hated before anyone else at the time.

  • To lambdachi1826:

You are really right! Your opinion is... such as mine...

Sorry for my Engllish... I'd like to write more and more but I can't....the grammar...

This f...ing Hungarian language (and people) killed my mind...'no more comment about this'

Anyway, I am empatized with Jesus. I don't know why. Hmmm!

  • comment_servlet?all_comments=1&v=RNvgXJdZJZY

  • KLF sample at 3:16

    Thanks to leeryder0822

  • my favourite musical

    it is amazing

    but 2000 was real rubissh

  • Brilliant. Just brilliant.

  • I played cello in the pit for a local run of Jesus Christ Superstar. Every night we passed the clapper (used to make the whipping sound) to the next person in the pit to do the whipping. The night it got to me, I misjudged how long it would take me to put down my cello and get into position, so that night Jesus only got 38 lashes.

  • This is by far the better of the two movie adaptions. Every scene in the 2000 version feels like a broadway set, all the "villains" are dressed like nazis or muslims, and there are very strong homosexual overtones between the lead male characters.

It just feels creepy and weird.

Also, these lyrics are closer to the original play and Pilate just sounds better with a higher voice.

  • @ijpowers

Absolutely. This pilate is acting far better than the 2000 guy, and the whole production is far better in every way than the 2000 version.

    Kudos

  • Comment removed

  • 4.23: Herod himself (who was laughing at the beginning of the lashing) feels that they are punishing him too much...

  • Pilate looks kind of like Ringo.

  • i know everyone disagrees but the best charcter in this show is pilate

  • In this musical Jesus is a sucky actor and Pilate is gay and a crap singer and the music is so quite and it never really builds up to a climax. I like the one with Glenn Carter. :)

  • "Everything is fixed,And you can't Change it"

    Best line ever...

  • I'm not sure that I believe that Pilate felt guilty about killing Jesus, like the Christian Bible portrays him.

    1) He executed thousands of Jews throughout his reign as Governor. Historically, he was a ruthless man who was eventually pulled out of Palestine before he roused the people too much.

    2) As governor of Palestine, he had ultimate power. So why would he be swayed by a simple crowd to kill Jesus? If he DID feel guilty about executing Jesus, he would have just gone against the crowd.

  • For some reason I find Pilate slightly atractive.....

  • @ActorAndPerformer123 ya i was about to say that.... idk but he gets me all moist down there. lmao jk but he is oddly attractive. i think the accent has something to do with it.

  • This is crap compared to the Australian version

  • even herod was some-what discusted. wow.

  • Whoa, the skeksis Chamberlain from "The Dark Crystal" sings and torments Christ. O_O

  • "We both have Trrrrrruths"! Just love that sound :D

  • hmmm.. Pilate rolls his R's

    BTW-Herod is a sick man

  • I love this musical too!

  • This mixes amazing singing and dialogue with amazing acting. Very well done!

  • I have always empathized with Pilate. He never WANTED to put Christ to death. "He's done no wrong. No not the slightest thing." "I'll agree he's mad. Ought to be locked up. But that is NOT a reason to destroy him...not a thief. I NEED a crime! He's just misguided. Thinks he is important". "How can I help you?" he asks Jesus. I think Pilate is one of the most wrongfully considered villians of all time. He was one of the few on Christ's side. Just my opinion. I love this show.

  • @lambdachi1826 i agree that he is not a villian, but he gave in to the crowd. He had a choice and he made it, just because he was afraid of what would happen to him if he didn't condem Jesus.

  • @AC554

pilot had nothing in his hands - everything worked out as planned he is without blame or guilt he was just a pawn in a grand chess match

  • @lambdachi1826 I am the reencarnation of Pilate and you are absolutly right.

  • @lambdachi1826 i agree about feeling bad for pilate, but as much as i also love this play you do realize that he did not actually say those things you quote from this modern musical to back up your reasoning. I feel bad for him because he was really hesitant about sentencing Jesus to death but he was also a coward for bowing to public opinion he knew was wrong. He was in the position of authority and needed to act justly, but he instead fell under pressure.

  • @lambdachi1826 me too!! i love this movie! and i agree: pilate is very "human", totally comprehensible. BUT, in my opinion, even judas acts in a comprehensible way... i believe he *had* to betray, that everything was set for him to be like that. personally, i don't see anything wrong when he says "people who are hungry, people who are starving, they matter more than your feet and hair!" -it's simply the truth.

i'm sorry if my english sucks, i'm italian ;)

  • @lambdachi1826

This is one of my FAVORITE musicals! I had the pleasure of seeing it in London. But understand, it's pure fiction. Pilate was a ruthless governor and was not sent where he was for his stellar record. The notion that he would give Jesus a chance to live is crazy. Pilate routinely put people to death with no trial.

  • @lambdachi1826 Pilate knew that Jesus could save himself but he refused to do it. He couldn't understand why Jesus wanted to die, but he knew he wanted to. Pilate killed him becasue Jesus truly wanted to die and to prevent a riot with the mob.

  • @lambdachi1826

I totally agree with you! And I hate reading stories that say that Pilate is at the bottom of hell (I think that's in Dante's Inferno), when he basically did what Christ already knew would happen.

  • @lambdachi1826 I must agree but yet disagree. Pilot, was the man to sentence Jesust to death. He was compelled to destroy him, of his own desire. But he had he power to save him. Yet, he did not... It is a great depiction of the will of the people. And he let hte people tell him what to do. Think if he did not destroy him, we may not even talk about him today. God pushed him to do it... Such a small story that became so bit... Think about it, God pushed him to do it, and, well....???

  • @lambdachi1826

Actually, the real Pilate was responsible for the death of literally thousands of people. He absolutely hated having to go to Jerusalem, because of the people and the smell. The Romans feared a Jewish revolt, so every Easter they'd crucify hundreds of so called "rabble-rousers".

What I'm saying is; the real Pilate probably wouldn't have tried so hard to save Jesus.

  • @outerw

"He absolutely hated having to go to Jerusalem, because of the people and the smell."?

Is this based on a historic document? speculation? or recollection?

  • @ivlfounder

I may have exaggerated a little for effect, but what we do know from historical writers like Josephus Flavius is that Pilate brutally antagonised the Judaic people. Provocation, intimidation, theft and murder were common under his prefecture. In fact, he was sent home after a nasty incident resulting in a lot of dead Samaritans. That he didn't like the smell might have been conjecture on my part, but he obviously had no love for the Jews.

  • @lambdachi1826 Yes, he was on his side. But the Man is judged by his deeds, not by the words he says. You put it very right, but in the end Pilate "washes his hands" because "Remember Caesar, you have a duty to keep the peace so crucify him". Pilate was caring about his own person, because saving Christ would mean a big unfortunate turn in his career. Read Master and Margarita by M. Bulgakov.

  • @lambdachi1826 and I think, that Pilate had no choice but to let them crusify him! Coz it was all planned by God and Jesus was supposed to die to save us all from our sins... Pilate was just another little piece in THE game (you have nothing in your hands, any power you have comes to you from far beyond...) Pilate ain't no villain...

  • @lambdachi1826 Caiaphas shows remorse, too. I think he knows the whole thing is cruel but he needs to protect his people from the Romans. Doesn't look too happy when Pilate says "you Jews bring us messiahs by the sackful."

  • @lambdachi1826 He washed his hands... Fanatics like Caiaphas thought they were killing a menace, Pilate knew he killed an innocent man... Find Nikolai Ge's picture: "Quod Est Veritas?" It shows a perfect face of both Pilate and Christ.

  • What a great movie! He has a voice! I can't believe you like this like I do with all the sex drive to go with it!~ lol.. How cool!

  • the lashes. thats pretty fucked up

  • my favorite play, my favorite movie........

  • 1:05, it's weird, it sounds like Jesus is losing his mind...

  • i LOVE this musical

  • Guitar lick at 3:18.

    AWESOME
