The three main words any model or designer know when it comes to clothes are: haute couture, pret-a-porter and avante garde. Well, puting emphasis on the defining characteristics of traditional fashion design is important for keeping the field from losing appreciation and/or respect. Alot of the contestants on ANTM don't see the difference between European fashion and American fashion. To them it's all the same for which Tyra is partly to blame. High-fashion is a new concept that came decades after the form avante-garde was created. It's not exciting because the undertone (in my opinion) is Cirque de Soleil (sp?).
