Perfect flying shown in this video! For you guys criticizing the pilot, it is absolutely normal to leave the props to about 1700-1900 rpm, and on touch down push them forward before reversing! this is not a Piper Seminole, forget the GUMPS check!
I like all the guys with zero turboprop experience writing about the props. As someone with over a thousand hours in King Airs and another thousand in the Dash 8, it's QUITE normal to leave the props back on turboprops...notice when he pushes the levers forward, the RPM is still FALLING as the power comes to idle. There's no sudden rise. Learn your systems before you criticize someone who flies it regularly.
Also when he did put the props to fully fine he did it in quite a quick motion (probably cause he just realized that he had forgotten to do it). Its not good for the engine for it to be done like this at all, it should be done in a gradual motion. Considering that he's harped on about how there was fog and its a tricky field (blah blah arent I an amazing pilot BS) it makes his mistake even worse. Surely knowing that other pilots were going to watch this, i'm surprised he uploaded it. DUH!
@tedlgn Again with the not putting props forward?? He landed at 1900rpm (a well recognised technique to reduce passenger noise when landing on a non performance limiting runway). You will do ZERO damage to the engines using this technique no matter how quickly you move them up, due to the fact they are free flow turbines. Banging them forward on approach from 1700rpm to 2000rpm yeah, gradual motion then otherwise you will damage the reduction gear box, not the engine.
Sick video dude. This is some good stuff. But I do have to wonder about the prop levers. I'm not a King Air driver (but commercial AMEL)...what's up with that?
airspeed was nailed. the narrow, small, closed in runway and lower approach makes it look faster - also the beta was added in at the right time- he killed the power and shoved up the props for brakes right after touchdown then reversed it - done perfectly
@smokingws6 So if its a long runway then its ok to not set the props to a setting that will provide maximum power if a go around is needed? What on earth are you talking about?
@sizianni Spot on mate nice pickup....! Just like, "if you can't hover, don't bother!" :-P or if you wings don't rotate, you take it up the date. and so on and so forth... Light humour. I of course respect all pilots still.
Quite a few comments asked about not putting the props full forward before touch down, I fly the B200 too (single pilot mostly) and very rarely put the props forward, unless landing on an exceptionally short strip! Props forward in a KA is surprisingly loud and I suspect Steve didnt put them forward for the same reason I dont, passenger comfort. If something goes wrong you aren't as performance limited as you are in a piston and it doesnt take long to put them forward.
@SaulBasley That makes sense. I had thought it might have something to do with torque limits, but then my only King Air experience is with FSX (like all the other "experts" commenting here)
@MiketheCFI Thanks Mike, I've got around a 1000 king air 200hrs and know my aircraft and systems, all these "experts" slating him for something they clearly know nothing about. Just a small point for your initial thoughts, the torque actually goes down when you put the props forward, coarser pitch means less torque output needed, in fact a common gotcha on KA is when bringing the props back after take-off is over torquing.
@SaulBasley Thanks for clearing that up about the torque increasing with decreasd RPM's. I'm a little embarrased that it's something I ought to have known, or at least should have occured to me in the first place.
im a studying pilot and im a little confused..... dont know if its correct to do that what u did after touch down, is not supossed to be the prop. at its maximum in case of a go around to have more grip??...sorry. if i am being stupid.
Question: I noticed you waited until touchdown until you went fine pitch on the props. What does that do for this particular approach situation? Usually I see the props set to fine a couple minutes before touchdown. No criticism, merely curious.
@ballaboy899 I received a message from steveo earlier and he explained that he did this as a convenience to his passengers to keep noise down some on approach. It could work...
@theo10111111111 There is never a FO for a King Air, maybe occasionally at some airlines, but most of the time, all the King Air needs is one pilot. ^^
I've been flying King Air 200's, 300's, and 350's for almost 20 years now. Here's a little tip - during shutdown, you will put less stress on your prop hubs and the shanks of each blade if you will move the condition levers to "Fuel Cutoff" first, let the props spool down about 20-30 seconds... THEN, pull the props levers into Feather. I know it's only technique, but I've been to school on these puppies A LOT and I've heard this many times over the years. (and from other King Air pilots)
Awesome video! Which settings did you use on the GoPro to get the outside view, I have my GoPro camera and try making a video on a king air but I couldn't get the outside view on the video?
Great viewing angle in order to see the cockpit instruments and the view outside. Too bad these cameras alias the electronic instruments and prop arc in the way they do! Do you like flying the King Air?
Hey steve im from freeport, grand bahama! Keeping making these vids, im currently getting my ppl :) i think you should try walkers cay airport if you really want a challenge, happy tailwinds buddy
@UkraineStar77 I don't think that those are the flaps. Looks more like the prop levers. With leads me to my question: don't you put the prop levers to fine full forward before you land in case of a missed approach/go around? Or is this different on a turboprop then on a piston? Nice video!
I just subscribed a couple of days ago. Spent a good part of my night watching all your older videos. Do you miss the airline life at all? lol. Glad you still have a job in this economy, and corporate, even better!!
@RippedWookie Thanks for the 1st comment/view! Every aircraft is somewhat pitch sensitive but the King Air 200 doesnt have as long of "Arm" as some of the other aircraft I have flown so it is not that bad when someone walks from the rear of the cabin to the front.
Nice landing.
