There's an entire chapter devoted to Joe Meek's 1959 stereo masterpiece I Hear A New World—along with the restored and remastered music—in the brand new eBook Second Edition of Joe Meek's Bold Techniques by Barry Cleveland (available from iTunes, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble).
interesting comments, this all fell into place with the space age, satellites and new developments in sound-so with hindsight it fits, but then The Beatles came along and blew it all away!
I thin kyou might just be bassing this on the film. If you look into it german music took over this form of slow trippy music and then gave it back in the 70's and 80's to the west
When listening to most of Meek's albums i can't help imagine him actually killing his landlady. Weird, and yet it all makes sense somehow. Music so sugar-coated and dizzy and innocent...it's so perverted! Can't wait to see the film!
There is a seam of insanity running through everything meek ever did - telstar itself has a manic quality to its soundscape, melody and arrangement - the sort of tune that could flip someone flaky over the edge. tornados recordings were all pretty bonkers by todays standards but at the time they must have sounded dynamic and revolutionary. i hear a new world is a wonderful sonic experience let down today by the now laughable pinky & perky voices. but this man was a pioneer, a real genius.
My old man had this in his record collection. When I moved away from home I took all his LP's with me, on account that he had run off with a 23 year old British Airways air stewardess...anyway I've just found the vinyl version of this Joe meek jem in my record collection...strangely, I actually bought a cd copy three years ago, not realising I already had a copy.
Beleive it or not it is my father singing on this song.(Not the one that sounds like helium)His name is Rod Freeman and he sadly died more than 25 years ago when i was just 7.There is a film being released in February called Telstar the Joe Meek story.I have been to an advance screening as they used three of my dads other songs and it is brilliant.Directed by Nick Moran from Lock stock and two smoking barrels and starring Con o'neill who bought Joe Meek to life in the stage play.
I believe it! Rod Freeman and the Blue Men, right? I think this is a great record - especially given that it was recorded so long ago. Thanks for the head's up on the movie about Joe Meek coming out. I want to see it!
hi there, i'm a filmmaker based in melbourne, australia... currently cutting a short film. i have been dying to use some of the music from "i hear a new world" in the cut - it just seems so appropriate to the tone we're after! do you know who owns the copyright now? can't wait to see the meek feature - you must be very proud of your old man.
Yeah my mother and RPM records have joint ownership of the licence and i can now confirm that Telstar the Joe Meek story is released in cinemas nationwide on 19th june!
this song would be good if it wasn't for the voice that sounds like someone on helium that makes me want to lock myself in my room and rock back and forth on the floor in a ball. sccccccccccccccaaarrrrrrrrrry.FACT.

To me the dated voices just make it more strange, like The Monks more poppy songs, especially the recent rerelease Sweet Suzanne.
