Watson died of cardiac infarction on May 17, 1996, while on tour in Yokohama, Japan. According to eyewitness reports, he collapsed in mid guitar solo. His last words were "ain't that a bitch", probably in reference to the song "Ain't that a Bitch". His remains were brought home for interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
And as to the slavery thing. Yes, the Africans were part of the slave trade. They did sell their fellow Africans to the white slave traders. The slave traders did not go into the interior of Africa to gather slaves but African traders would capture other Africans and take them to the coasts where the selling took place. Slavery still takes place in Africa today. Two good documentaries which touch on the subject are Wonders of the African World and African American Lives 1.
@FilmNoirFan1 Who told you white slave traders didn't go to the interior looking for slaves? That's so wrong. Of course they did. that's where the money was.
JGW wrote the song and Steve Miller covered it. JGW did live performance of Gangster of Love in Germany (it's on youtube) and he said he wrote it and the Steve Miller band recorded. One artist singing another artist's song and having more success is not unusual.
@TheSatanas666 Shut it bitch. They INTERPRETED music. All blues players took from other players from the very beginning of the BLUSE as Son House would say. Now Pat Boone, that stupid, right-wing honky was a straight up thief!!!!!!
@TheSatanas666 I know foo! They shoulda credited Willie but, my point is that lots of Black artists stole riffs and songs as well. Should Hound Dog Taylor have sued Freddie King fo jackin Hideaway? Probably but I guess there wasn't much money in it at the time. Zep got sued cuz they were famous and rakin in da dough. Whitey wasn't the only one doin it!!!!!!!!!!!!
The album entitled: Johnny "Guitar" Watson was produced by ' Johnny Otis ' for KING records (Cincinnati 7 ,Ohio). It was released immediately after production.
@SchreiberDennis You mean the harmony? It's a standard blues progression. You can find it in literally thousands of songs, with very little difference.
Jesse James and Frank James Billy Kid, all the rest Supposed to be some bad cats Out in the West But when they dug me And my gangster ways They hung up their guns And made it to the grave 'Cause I'm a gangster of love Say IM a Ganster of Love when i walk down the street All the girls i meet Say hes a gangster of love
This King record was issued in 1963 the original Guitar Watson cover of this song came out in 1958 on Keen Records. But I know an older version by The Cadets from 1956 "Love Bandit" , a uptempo-R&B-Doo-Wop version with rapping lyrics ....watch out!
Jesse james and frank james, Billy the kid and all the rest, Supposed to be some bad cats Out in the west. But when they dug me, And my gangster ways, They hung up their guns, And made into their graves. Cause i'm a gangster of love, Say, i'm a gangster of love. Oh, well now, When i walk down the street, All the girls that i meet Say: "he's a gangster of love" (yeah!)
to all the nowaday "gangsta-wanna be"...you should take a look back and see where it comes from and reckon who was number one...and some of the big guys from today pimpin around out there should pay their tributes to the old school sometime, and i mean a hell of a lot more often than they do with that sometime....
