There was promo which aired during the syndication era where Gary Moore recounts the story of a man who said "My name is Donald Train.:" The actual name was Pullman.. when asked the man supposedly said "Train.. Pullman.. what's the difference."
I don't think it was planned. The look on Number 1's face was priceless when Garry asked them to step back and try again, and you could tell Number 2 was trying to decide whether to give his real name or try to save the spot by following Number 1's mistake. Too funny!
I always wondered if anyone ever gave either a wrong version, so to speak, of the central person's name, or the challenging contestant's own name, instead of the real person's. That was a great way to save it. Entirely too funny.
Considering that guest panelist Nancy Dickerson [who worked at NBC News back then] was in Kitty Carlisle's chair for this episode, the resemblance between the two is almost striking, never mind the age difference [Nancy was about 17 years younger than Kitty].
i am writing this near the beginning- it seems logical to me that it is number 1, because the other 2 wouldn't remember their fake name and just take the cue from the first guy.
I thought Dickerson bore more of a resemblance to a panelist from the 2000 version. (Can't remember her name, and it's driving me crazy.)

Well at least Dickerson knew that it couldn't be 1.
