  • i have watch this anime sooo manny times the end is sad :(

  • I watch the op at least 20 times a day.

  • I avoided this series when I first got in to anime, because it seemed too strange for me, but, years later, now that I've fallen for Mawaru Penguindrum I'm gonna have to go back and watch this one and find out what all these Ikuhara rants are about XD

  • to anyone who is hesitant about this anime, don't be. A lot of people are saying it is, but it isn't yuri. I haven't read the manga so the manga may very well be filled with yuri, but in this anime the closest you get to it is that they hold hands, but it seems to be in a friendly manner, and when they bring forth the sword anthy has to touch utena's chest, but that's later. It's really not that yuri filled. It's a great piece of artwork that you shouldn't be hesitant to watch :)

  • Utena has to be the most feminist show in existence, between its strong female lead and its themes of gender roles and how society pressures girls to dream of the perfect man to bring them happiness. It's also about love, good and bad relationships, and the transition from childhood into adulthood. I love this show. It's even more deep and complex than Evangelion.

  • @jotanshi "Revolutionary Girl" is the official Title for the English version. "Girl Revolution" doesn't make much sense in English.

  • @BadBenHo

Yeah alright alright, ofcouse I'd known such thing.

But orginal title in Japan also doesn't make much sense literally, and yet I think that somewhat stupidly nonsensical title is just the point of this work, that it should not have such making-sense orthodox normal title as that "Revolutionary Girl Utena". It is as if change the title of "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" into "Warriors of the Wind", so I wrote, though absurd myself.

  • I hate shojo anime (And anime itself sorta) since I'm not really girly (Nor manly) But the theme is catchy, still not gonna watch it though.

  • My sister and I have only been able to watch the first three episodes of Utena and haven't been able to find any more at the usual anime sites we go to. Does anyone know where we can go to watch the whole series?

  • @KutterStyle46 anilinkz . com or animecrazy . net

  • yo soy hombre, me gustan las mujeres pero tanbien muestro mucho interes en los anime yuri

  • got to say great series i loved it and i see anything when i feel is a good anime i watch, though some people are intimidated by yuri and shoujo ai and so on i dont really care for the titles if the anime is good 4 me then ill watch. But the series of RG Utena wasn't really yuri im not shore shoujo ai but its a series any anime fan that is interested in plot and good story line needs to see. Though FOR PEOPLE that dont like yuri dnt watch the movie, like i s i dnt r care since i enjoy d series.

  • If you don't agree with girls in love this show is probably not going to be for you. It's one of the least disturbing elements of this show I can imagine and not even necessarily the forefront. Adolescence (read:the movie) delves into a sensual relationship between Utena and Anthy where the series, in my opinion, delves into many more twisted sexual relationships within the rest of the cast that completely overshadow and even contrast the innocence and emotional depth Utena and Anthy share.

  • Guys if you love Utena you will be impressed with Mawaru Penguindrum.

    That's all I'm sayin'.

  • Judging from this op, this is what I though the anime was about before I watched the series: -Utena was a average school girl but at the same time, a revolutionary leader against the kingdom Anthy governs as the Queen. Anthy and Utena were best friends but Unknowingly, they were enemies.

    But man, I was wrong.

  • @cuteharuna That... sounds really really awesome. Now I wanna watch an anime about it.

  • @kellox17 OK listen I didn't like yuri before because I myself am not gay and either way I started watching the series

is it wrong that I might be a little weary of yuri? I think not

  • @NadiaEveStudio It just comes off as a little strange for you to say you might not watch one of the masterpieces of the shojo genre just because it might have yuri in it (it does, btw, and lots of incest too). That's like me saying I won't watch Neon Genesis Evangelion because I myself am not straight and I'm weary of straight romance. I'm glad you decided to watch RGU, it's just the way you phrased your first comment sounded very close-minded.

  • @girlchamp491 haha sorry 'bout that I don't really mind yuri anymore lol (I've read alot of one shot yuri recently ^^; ) I'm trying to not be close-minded

    but it was just a little weird because I didn't like to really see a woman and woman (coming from a fangirl of yaoi >_>;;; lol) but anyway sorry for sounding close-minded >_<;;

  • @NadiaEveStudio Dude, you can still like yuri and not be gay.

  • @ChairThrowingLady wrote that a while back

I read yuri here and there now -_-

  • Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of my favorite animes! As soon as I saw the 1st episode, I was hooked.

  • Ah... I love Revolutionary Girl Utena! It's really unlike any series I've ever seen. And no, not lesbian, I interpret Utena and Anthy of just being best friends, like sisters, and life partners in that way.

Weirdly enough, Utena reminds my a whole lot of myself. I wear the boy's uniform at my school (The only girl that does), I've always been obsessed with fairytales, been tomboyish but still have girly interests like fashion and shojo anime, and I even get my hair done pink during summer!

  • Does anyone know what this anime is about?

    If so, please respond!!

The opening is really catchy, somewhat. :)

  • @TwinHeart2 It's about a girl who wants to be a prince (Utena) and the girl she meets at her new school who she decides to "save". It's a lot more complicated and thought provoking than it sounds. the TV tropes page for it describes it pretty well

  • @TwinHeart2 The series invokes alot of symbolism, psychology and metaphors. Utena is one of those animes you have to sit and watch for youself don't rely on wikipedia or a youtube synopsis to try to understand series, just check it for yourself and see.

  • 0:27 I 'm scared of these blue thingsss!

  • this anime looks like lesbian but if you watch all of the episodes its actually more of a friendship than lesbian

  • lesbian ?

  • @AlinaAnn and btw I started watching the series

  • @AlinaAnn ok listen i wasnt that into yuri since I'm a straight girl so I'm not to much into girlxgirl. I don't hate it but I don't like it so much

  • This op is so awesome! I've watched it many times (including parodies) but still don't get bored with it! It's awesome!

  • I might start watching this anime but it seems like a yuri anime...;;

  • @NadiaEveStudio It kind of is and kind of isn't. It's really good either way.

  • @NadiaEveStudio That's a really shallow reason not to watch it. You don't see any yuri anyway, but lots of m/f stuff.

  • @NadiaEveStudio it has yaoi yuri and hetrosexual themes. Whats wrong with that?

  • @NadiaEveStudio It's actually not yuri at all. I'm a girl and I despise the yuri genre but this anime is one of my all time favorites. It's an incredibly intelligent show that really makes you think about life and becoming an adult. I would recommend it to anyone.

  • @Ldesu09 ok then :)

  • @Ldesu09 What does being a girl have to do with disliking yuri?

  • @Shiruvi The same reason a lot of guys are uncomfortable with yaoi? Obviously there are exceptions, even among straight men and women, but the idea that a girl might not be comfortable with yuri doesn't seem that surprising.

  • @suchiuomizu it just sounds like a lot of girls here are going 'I'M NOT A LESBIAN FOR LIKING THIS SHOW I SWEAR D:' rather then taking issue with whatever problems they feel exist in yuri centered media, such as whether or not something is a male fulfillment fantasy.

it's also kinda hilarious watching people be so hyperfocused on something as harmless as yuri but nobody brings up the incest/incestual rape, pedophilia from Akio etc etc.

  • @UrbanBeast55. xD my comment sounded bitter too lol

  • OMG MY DREAM =D i used to wanna be a prince when i was a little girl too XD i just finished ep 2 can't wait to see the rest of the show ^-^

  • @neurogirl11 I totally wanted to be a prince when I was a little girl to! Princesses get to wear nice clothes but princes get to be heros and wear nice cloths, pants ftw.

  • @UrbanBeast55 actually, yuri denotes hardcore girl on girl sex. Shoujo-ai is the proper term for lesbian love stories. Your original comment was incorrect.

  • @Oicherealtai No, it doesn't. That would just be hentai. The term comes from Western publishers trying to make it similar to shounen ai, and a translation of the english term used by Japanese publishers to mean the same thing (Garazu Rabu/Girl's Love/GL). But then again, lots of people immediately associate homosexuality in anime/manga with porn anyway. Why correct their misconceptions?

(Wow, that sounded more bitter than I'd intended...)

  • This anime looks pretty freaking gay. But I will give it a chance.

  • Is this a yuri?

  • My, precious utena if you're with me, I never feel lonely.

  • I like utena more in her short hair version, cause she's cuter ^^.

If I ever met a girl that pretty I would be honored.

  • Nice opening and music! Utena - my favorite anime!I love horals Seazer...^^

  • Honestly I thought Utena and Anthey were more symbolic, they completed one another in a literal sense.

Like puzzles, I don't think it was romantic at all, Anthy wanted to break from her brother and Utena was her key that broke the shell.

I honestly think that when Anthy went looking for Utena she was finding herself :)

  • The YouTube user spoonsan has put up the whole series, Japanese audio with English subtitles, good quality too. :)

  • if someone knows a site where i can watch this anime please send me a pm, because veoh doenst work and i cant find the episodes at youtube. thank you

  • @sailorwinxgirl Check either watchanimeon(dot)con, animefreaks(dot)tv, or animeseason(dot)com, perhaps you can find them there!

  • @RavenTheEchidna thank you for you help

  • I've only saw one free episode of this on Anime Network in demand. IT was really good X3 It seems old but IDC. I see shonen-ai and shoujo-ai in it.

  • Omg I ust to love this show!!!!!but the ending was sad.

  • To find the strength to throw it all away, to strip down to nothaing at all, to become like rose petals blowing free!

  • I love this opening :D

  • This series is getting re-released by right stuff

  • I love the song

  • i want a remake of utena with all my heart

  • i went on my tv and saw this on anime network for free cept it was ep like 25 its really goood i mean i see a yuri couple straight and yaoi couple

i dont know their names but

Green haired guy x Student council president

    1:00 1:04

  • I loved this series i was sad when i finished it

and it was good to but at the edn it kinda cut u off

im not going to say how for thoes ppl who havent finished the series

but it was so cool and funny and intersting the last few parts i was at teh tip of my chair , i may watch it again xD

  • Listen people, they are not lesbians, just two friends who share a close bond, nothing wrong with that. BTW Akio rules! So does this show.

  • why would they call this "ursula's kiss" in the Philippines?

  • This opening looks epic :D

  • este anime es como una novela

    muy hermosa D:

  • I love Utena. Even though it may not be my favorite series (though it's definitely up there) I would have to say that out of any anime series I've ever watched, Utena changed my life the most. It helped shape my sense of aesthetics and my views on symbolism when i was growing up. It even had some impact on my views on life and sexuality. Utena is such an intelligent, amazing series, and it's ashame that there's not more series like it.

  • I liked this anime :]

But I thought it was a bit repetitive in some parts. The music was really good too ;D

  • hmmm looks like a good anime :D shoudl i watch?

  • i think she lived some guy said you had to read in between the lines and the opening

  • Yeah i know.I love this anime and like the movie.Every episode made me excited. How i wish it tells about what really happened after the swords rushed towards utena.I wonder if she really survive....

  • Today is my birthday and I got a cell phone. That's right. I'm posting this comment on my phone. I love this opening. Out of all the anime opening I've seen this one made me happy to love anime.

  • The guy who directed this anime also directed sailor moon

  • I like this song and the characters look so cool.

  • yea! to me its similiar to sailor moon... :D :D

  • I know that because Sailor Moon and Utena were both really famous back then.

  • yeah.. they re really like those Old/but GREAT anime... im not saying that nowdays anime arent good but there s something in those old ones.. :P

  • omg omg omg OAO i've NEVER watched (or heard) of this anime before and yet those 2 girls in the beginning of the opening are JUST like my main characters. like seriously xD. and here i thought my characters would be super origanal .3. well... oh well i'll just watch the anime =w= it looks really good XD

  • Omg it really is an amazing anime. You have to watch it. Hope you enjoy :-)

  • whats the song

  • Rinbu Revolution

  • well its a little confussing but i am sure theres nothing importent so yea

  • Yes, there is romance between a girl and a guy in this show. They also happen to be brother and sister. Happy viewing!

  • Utena is a yuri anime at some points. there are all kinds of relationships happening. You kinda have to watch it to find out.

  • ummm.... could this possibly be a revers harem in any ways? even though its yuri at the same time?

  • Well...I wouldn't really consider it a Reverse Harem just because....All the girls dote on Utena mostly. Aside from Touga and the Prince >> she's attracts women.

  • Utena tv series aren't yuri (Utena movie- it can be named yuri but not tv series). It hard to call it shoujo-ai either- in tv series there arent any erotic scenes beetwen Utena and Anthy (and that's why it's not yuri), they don't even kiss or or say that they love each other- and it's not shoujo-ai either.

They are more like a sisters or very close friends- but not couple or lovers.

  • It's labeled as a widely known yuri series though. >> just saying.

  • @sm1985sm1985sm Agreed, if anything, I think it was amazing and it teaches the value of friendship

  • @sm1985sm1985sm Stop using the term "shojo-ai". Please. You have no idea what that means. It's a term to denote pedophilia, similar to lolicon; it has nothing to do with yuri, which is just a general term for romance/attraction between women.

  • @UrbanBeast55 Lurk moar

  • @sm1985sm1985sm I agree that the series as a whole can't be defined as shoujo-ai, since that relationship doesn't define the series, but I'm pretty sure the relationship they have is a bit closer than "sisters" or friends" - i don't think Utena wanted Himemiya to "Someday, shine with her" as a sister and to say so takes a lot of the import out of their relationship...also, if you need validation, Ikuhara himself has said many times that they're definitely in love.

  • @pratyeka Plus they kiss a bunch in the movie, and the dance set to Toki Ni Ai Wa is one of the most romantic things I've ever seen.

  • Oh, it's there....you just have to "read between the lines".

  • I love this anime! xD I have a DVD of it! and I didnt understand the movie O_o

  • Well, youre not the only one. :D

  • ahh! ^^! UtenA!

  • Anthy has long hair in all of the incarnations of Utena, it just so happens she wears it up most of the time in a majority of them. There was probably a reason why she did her hair that way and wore glasses. Have you seen the ending of the TV series? She is quite beautiful then.

  • Yo... try to search this on youtube

    "Rinbu Revolution - Guy version"

  • Coincidently, I had seen that recently lol.

  • O_O guy version !! XDDD i must watch this !!! ;3

  • i like d song:D

  • According to an interview that Software Sculptures had with Director Ikuhara in the third to last DVD (which I own), Utena and Anthy are NOT gay. He said that he used sapphic imagery because he wanted to show that Utena and Anthy were in a class of their own and as an allusion to being in a specific minority.

Well, at least that's the case for series Utena and Anthy. In the MOVIE (which is an alternate universe) he made them full blown gay.

Also, Chiho Saito (co-creator) had little

  • power over what happened in the film. Despite what many people believe, Chiho Saito was VERY important in the development of the original series characters. She contributed greatly to the character designs and personalities. (most of the character resemble characters from her past manga.) I came to this conclusion from watching all the DVD interviews and reading a bunch of really good essays at the site Empty Movement. Hope this helps out the discussion a little. :)

    -A big Utena fan

  • Two girls who have sex are, in fact, having lesbian sex. Trying to make some sort of "distinction" just reeks of misguided homophobia.

  • Comment removed

  • the sung is great and the anime is kool 2

  • wow i luv the song :)

well, i don't really care what they are to eachother b/c the anime is awesome & they are basically best friends, & utena is just protecting her friend..thats why she fights...i mean...i would totally portect mi bestfriend if the world was like that

  • TAKE MY REVOLUTION!

  • I think I'll do just that.

  • no big deal, it's obvious that is shojo-ai XDD it's not that shocking when you're used to see to many shonen-ai <3

  • love this op love the song love the anime

  • Wow, all these debates about sexuality...

The only character who's quite definitely not heterosexual is Juri/Jury, the orange-haired girl.

Utena and Anthy's relationship is very much something, but I wouldn't class either of them as being straight or lesbian or anything, really. Things are just how they are.

Back to topic; I love this song, and the anime is one of my favourites. <3

  • The last episode made me CRY ALOT I can't believe its ATHMY'S TURN TO FIND UTENA (i may have spell some names wrong XD) anyways its a beutiful anime!

  • Actually, pretty much everyone is more heterosexual except for a the orange haired girl (forgot her name), what with the whole male/female gender roles theme that's the CORE of the show.

  • well yes, for the most part, everyone has more heterosexual romances than homosexual ones, but the ending of the series implies that Utena and Anthy are the official pairing. god, I never thought I would be arguing romance aspects of a show. I generally hate them.

  • Not necessarily. All we know is that Anthy chose Utena over her brother. This could mean multiple things, such as the fact that Utena is her only real friend and is more trustworthy than her brother, who was using her for sex and his evil machinations. Most importantly, Anthy wants to find Utena because Utena is REAL.

  • Ok, I'll give you that, except it always seemed to me that there was supposed to be some form of romance between them.

  • Because the author was a pervert who left Sailor Moon because it didn't have enough girl on girl action (seriously)! The two, in-story, aren't a couple, but he gave enough symbolism and imagery to spawn enough fan-content for it. It's more like they have a sort of "Best Friends Forever <3" kind of thing.

  • well the creators released the ova movie to be more conclussive about the anthy utena pairing

  • @BadBenHo I think that is really up to the viewer. I think that they made them close enough to be romantic for people who would prefer that pairing and platonic enough for people who just want to view them as friends. *Spoiler* In the last Episode Himemiya said herself that Utena couldn't be her prince because she is a girl. Utena still proved she was better then a prince in many important ways.

  • Orientation don't mean a thang in Ohtori. Or age. Or gender. Or anything.

  • why yes.... yes they are.....

  • If you would actually watch the show you would learn that almost every character is bisexual.

  • yeah also the one whos like utena my love! lmao

  • they are not LEZBEANS -_-

  • yeah basically they are there engeged to eachother...

  • Well, in the anime it's implied much more heavily than in the manga. In the manga, Utena's sexuality is more clearly bi.

  • I love this song. Especially the very beginning of the vid ^_^ Such a good anime...

  • No... lol :-)

  • can you upload many clips that anthy and wakaba using face products, washing their faces, saying face (kao),moon (tsuki),and age (sai) for me?

  • there are a few problems with that.

1: I have little to no idea what you're talking about.

2: My laptop has died and I don't have an alternative computer.

so, unfortunately, the answer is no, I can't. sorry.

  • would someone plz explain this anime to me plz!

  • There isn't really much to explain really. It's open to interpretation. whatever YOU think it's about.

  • 500 characters just isn't enough. ^_~

  • wa there is 500 characters

    lol

  • No, I mean that the 500 character limit on Youtube comments wouldn't provide enough space to adequately explain the show.

  • ok lol

  • There's this one guy. And these two girls. And a bunch of other people. They all fight to own this other girl so they can revolutionize the world.

    And then they have sex.

  • LMAO!

  • LMFAO epic summary XD

  • This is a great opening sequence to Utena, now I think I may check this anime out for sure!

(hey, I subscribed you and added you to my friends here, add me back?)

  • I will if I ever get around to checking my "friends pending" thing. I have a lot of random people who want to add me as a friend who I don't know, so I just don't check it anymore XD
