  • HANG ON!!

does this happen every year? in every country or just USA?

in that case, i missed it for 3 years :P

  • A day without gays. Would we (non gays) even notice? Aren't you just playing the "gay card" with this protest? What if we (Americans) liked the day too much, and wanted to get rid of you more often?

A day without gays is like a day without your toilet backing up. Not a bad thing.

  • @Elaiyel pftahahahahhhaha im sorry you actually make me laugh... if there was a day without you... i bet not even ur mum would notice :)

  • @RandomAlexLol You wait six months, and this is the best you can do? I wish you and your family, particularly your mom, all the best though.

  • @Elaiyel yeah coz theres no chance i stumbled apon this video seeing stupid comments, obviously i stalked you for 6 months before finally replying... lol your not the fuking center of the universe... get out your own arse... ty for the wishing for the best... but dont need it... we already are :)

  • @RandomAlexLol You're welcome.

  • @Elaiyel tehe dw about it :)

  • Oh yes they did .... In 1030's Germany, ... your all going to Madagascar, but we ended up in concentration camps with pink identifiers on us, then gassed by a company that still exists today, zyklon B was the culprit, an insecticide gas. Adolph Hitler, a devout Roman Catholic instigated this crime. For some reason people don't like the truth!!! IBM made the machines that put the tattooed numbers on our brothers. For some reason they won't open their archives for this period in history. TRUTH.

  • @stoodOnAnArk Sorry correction ..... IBM made (designed) the machines that calculated the data in relation to the numeric numbers identifying each person set for destruction. A precursor to bar codes, the tabulation machines for the American census were upgraded for this purpose, like a really primitive punch card computer. They blame the Germans, just like Christian blaming the Jews for murdering Christ.

  • well for starters keep doing what your doing so far you have hanged my mom AND my dads mind bout like every thing like thers two sides to every thing this is a start dont let it go!

  • A day without gays? What will that help? I say a LIFETIME without Homophobes! Lets ban them. Why do The gay people gotta sacrafice? ridiculouse.

  • thts bull. im not gay but i completly respect thm. aaand i think a day without gays is jus rude and disrespectful. gay ppl r ppl 2 and its not like thrs a day with out straight ppl. thts soo insensitive. who would ever b tht.. tht... curel to say tht ther should b a day without gays??? wat has this world come 2??

  • maybe you all should do a year without a gay. A whole year where homosexuals stop going to work and such.

  • Why give the ones that want us gone a reason to think that we finally have. I think we should do a "Day with Gays" and all the gays should rush all the places that would love to see a world without us. <3

  • depends, if its covenient for me to get out of school becuse im bi, then i support it

  • I agree with you whole-heartedly.

  • im gonna eat

  • we need a gay land :) i'd live there

  • Its the survival of the fittest idea - the generation of people who hate black people is dying off, the mentality of women being less is almost totally gone. Do you see a pattern? People who vote against justice and equality eventually die off and the good truly prevails. Are you sure you are on the correct track??

  • Oh wait you can't? Oh whats that - how dare i try to make you feel uncomfortable about something you aren't able to prove (yet). How the hell do you think it makes other people feel when you do that to them?

If you don't mind gay people but don't support them then all that makes you is two-faced and uninformed. Gay people do not choose it - it just is genetic and either you can go with the flow or die off like the rest of them...

  • Hey CJean - you didn't choose to be straight - it is in your DNA... no you didn't choose - you were born that way, no stop saying you chose because you didn't its in your dna!!

Fine you think you chose to be straight? Prove it. Prove that there isn't a difference in the genes of straight and gay people.

  • Comment removed

  • So you had the choice to be gay or straigh? It was a conscious decision? It didn't happen that way for me. I know God loves me. He created me. As far as verses from the Bible, it also says that anyone who curses their mother or father shall surly be put to death. It's an abomination to eat shell fish or wear blended cottons. When do ppl stop picking and choosing whats right and whats wrong?

  • I meant blended materials.

  • cjean, being gay isn't a choice. Did you choose to be straight? Think about it. Who would choose to be discriminated against, to be hated and not have the same rights as every other american?

  • i think without us doing anything, we would be more appreciated when it comes to work.....

  • I think you raise a great point here, Dan! We need to follow Palestine's example and demand that Gayland be established! Haha, but on a serious note, if we had an event that lasted a week, it might help to increase the ripple effect...but the week should lead up to something really monumental! Just a thought.

  • I'm gay, and I didn't know this existed until just now. *feels left behind* Thanks for the 411, Dan! <3

  • It might have been a little more effective had it been a week or a month without gays. While it would have been hell to organize, it would have gotten the message across MUCH better. And even then, it would still only be a small dent in society, and they would move on like it never happened.

  • i don't understand the hint you gave me....

  • What's the guitar song called on the background? :-)

  • Seems like a really good idea! We could really teach the world what we represent

  • good idea!

  • i didn't participate it did not make sense

  • it's like black out, to show how a minority can affect the entire population. It never really works, but makes sence in theroy

  • I didn't get why we would do his at first but then i read your post and it clicked!

    so thanks!

    ^_^

  • Thoughts from a heterosexual male:

It's a good movement with supports from all types of groups. Classism is the real problem in this nation. People see me differently because I'm an Atheist Latino/Asian dating a Catholic Native American. I get discriminated for a lot of things, mainly being an Atheist. I shouldn't be able to restrict you from doing ANYTHING unless it's harming me. And you being gay, it doesn't affect me.

I support this cause, I hope it does turn into a movement.

  • thank you

  • Ah yes, now that the economy is fucked, why don't we all get together and figure out a way to impact it NEGATIVELY just to make a damn gay point. Seriously!!!! What the hell is wrong with us? Gay people are supposed to be creative, not completely and ultimately retarded. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

  • in theory it sounds like a good idea to raise awareness. however, i wouldn't call in sick to work or skip classes because of it. plus, you're right. it doesn't make sense.

  • the only problem with this line of thought zck12 is that you arent aware of the amount of people around you that are gay. if you have more than two friends, i can gaurentee that one of them is closeted. statistically 1 in 10 people are gay. thopse are the ones that admit it. its more like 1 in 5. You see us as GAY people, instead of just as people. Get to know some of us, you will find that we arent any different outside of the bedrooms than anyone else.

  • i didnt know about this till right now, jan 17th 09 lol

  • the point of the day without gays is to show the economical impact if all the gays in the united states was not present. its supposed to show that gays are tax payers and consumers to and deserve rights like any other tax payer consumer.

  • Did you make your shirt? I really like it.

And I totally agree. Day Without A Gay was half-assed and poorly organized.

  • I couldn't get out of school (Dude, I'm 13... xD), so I wore human rights badges all over my shirt. Not ONLY is December 10th Day Without a Gay, but it's ALSO National Human Rights Day.

Everybody was asking about the badges, and it was really cool. I got to educate some of my classes on what they meant, and what the day meant to me.

  • ah i was sick that day and everyone thought i was a lesbian

  • i didn't go to school

  • i hardly even knew about it, or knew what it was for, i had heard that it was gays aren't supposed to come to school, etc. So, i thought it was offensive, like the world wanted a day without gays :P

  • i took the day off school and when i got back my so called friend made fun of me for taking the day off love your shirt. i think its important cuz alot of ppl dont get how many of us there are and how many ppl stand by us gay or not. i do agree we do need to do more

  • one day i decided i needed a day off. i took it. nothing happened.

  • thats my birthday.....

  • I think it's an empty gesture. Maybe if it went on for a week it'd make a difference, but not just a single day.

  • I didn't participate in it. I think this an interesting concept, and isn't something good fore a long term goal for advancing rights. Its just more of a blimp of publicity. One of the reasons I didn't participate was that i had a final exam that day. Interestingly enough, for Contemporary Social Movements. Lol!

  • Aw I got into a car accident on the 10th...maybe that was my reminder it was a day without gays :(

  • I don't really think this will make\made a splash. i think generally America doesn't care what we do on one day..we're such a relatively small minority group it doesn't make a difference, sadly.

  • i don't think it'll do anything, i mean it's already past nd still nothing so it was basically a bunch of bull so that day was pointless, i wouldn't have supported it anyways

  • Days without gays would be boring tbh x

  • yeah i agree with u

  • I really don't think it is a good idea.

    Because like,

when you do something like this,

it shows people what it is like to not have homosexual's on Earth.

It is only one day, and people will be sick bastards and think that it is perfect.

    Doesn't make sence to me.

  • why canada eh?

  • ps, great video!

  • Belfast did this years ago when business owners such as hotels turned away gay couples, it made a difference maybe not for gay rights, more because no business like bad publicity. However even when civil partnerships became legal the problem presented itself again, with the creation of "gay friendly" venues. More needs to be done in the area of gay equality, our money is just as good as anyone elses and our gay "forefathers" went through death, tortue and captivity to get us to where we are now.

  • Day without Gays seems a bit petty to me. I'm gay, but I don't see how this will do anything to solve anything.

As for not attending classes, that will hurt no one but yourself. The classes continue, and you miss out. Do they care that you're not attending? no!

  • hes sooooo adorable!

  • having a boycott during a recession doesn't sound like such a good idea.

  • Generally i agree with you on this vid dan. However i think any publicity showing our numbers is a good thing. unfortunetly politicians & str8s and the powers that be seem to only want to know how big of a community we are. My wish would be for every str8 person to say "Yeah i know a gay person". if we have a human face, it's harder for the rapists to take away our rights. love ya Dan, dont ever stop! now where do i get that T?

  • I am again reminded why you are one of my favorite youtubers. Great video Dan!

  • first off, i love your shirt. i mean.. yeah. it's probably kinda weird but i do.

i had an exam that day, so i had to do stuff. but i think that just calling in gay to school/work won't help if they don't know why you're not there. so we should make an effort to make that clear as well. not just dissapearing like that.

okay, so i did what you said, i paused your video. after watching i'll probably agree with whatever you're gonna say =)

keep vlogging! i watch all your videos!!

    x

  • I agree; instead of trying to make people aware of how many gays there are in our society by taking the day off, should make people aware that gays are people too, that gays are just like any other person and that there's really nothing different other than sexual preference.

  • "...is this a facebook event.." LOL that was funny

  • hey so ya i had my exam that day so that kinda sucked all theo it was in Human Sexualty sso i guess that counts lol anyway I spent it with my boyfriend watching Rent and Shelter to good movies !

  • Why only one day? Go all out. Make it for ever, and the world would be a better place.

  • You're a snatchy whore.

  • That was meant for Angleboot.

  • only if we still get paid for not going to work... lol

  • I agree with you about not taking ourselves out of society - even for a day. If the community wants to make a statement that lasts make with money. Support companies and orginazations that support us. By the same token, don't support companies (like Cracker Barrel) that openly discriminate against gays. Even if the monetary support (or lack of support) isn't a major factor in the companies or organizations bottom line - at least we are helping "friends" and not supporting the haters.

  • I love watching your videos and I totally agree with you. We should fight for what we believe in each and every day. Not necessarily a protest every day, because protests would lose their impact, but at least concrete actions every day: talk to people, post videos (like you do), read & learn, etc...

  • I am not promoting it, BUT if every gay/lesbian person in any hospital took the day off the hospital would not be able to function at all!!!!

  • why the hospital?

  • I stated in the hospital because that is what a recent survey revealed here in Sydney

  • If I had known I would've done it, or at least asked my parental unit, alas I did not, and they probably wouldn't have let me anyway, not because they wouldn't support it, but because they wouldn't let me not go to school. *shrugs*

Seems like an interesting idea, I would like to hear/see about how it turned out before final judgment of it's stupidity or not is made.

  • well.. don't you think that a day without gays will show them ur value?

i mean; surely there is a doctor who is gay , a lawyer who is gay, a teacher who is gay ... etc ...

imagine each one of those didn't come that day; what gonna happen?

that gonna stop the normal circulation of the day !!!! and they'll believe that gays are part of the society as well =) God bless !

  • I totally agree with you!!! I think it would be much better if everyone who are gay came out of the closet and were totally honest about themselves to everyone, and everyone should notice that they know at least one gay person. That maybe and hopefully should change peoples minds about us. Maybe...

  • everyone come out of the closet? like Fred Phelps lol

  • lol if only we had a Gay-Land....

  • that would be so cool i bet every 1 would be makingout with each other and no 1 has to make fun of u

  • its a really good idea. but i didn't celebrate it. i have bills to pay. calling off work for a day would mean not being able to pay my phone bill (yes i actually use every cent i make to pay my bills i'm 20 yrs old putting myself through college).

but in practice idk if it'll work. its like whn ppl said don't buy gas for a day, but ppl need to anyway. good thought....

  • Hey, where did you get the shirt at? I love it.

  • celebrate it. a day without gays yea ill celebrate YES ON 8

  • you are absolutely right. couldnt have said it better myself..

  • Wednesday the 10th of what? I'd like to participate but not all of us are a plugged into the network at others. Please be more clear as to where the tradition came from and what day of the year it is.

An honest and sincere supporter of you. I think you're grand. Keep up the great work. You've opened so many eyes.

    Steve Boyle

Austin TX (Athens on the Colorado)

Please come visit, esp. during South by Southwest! You'd love this place. This place will love you.

  • i had to go to school but i am just siiting at home even though i needed to go to wla mart im staying home not doing anyhting justsistting in my room and i told people on mysapce that iwasnt going to be on becuase of today so they are freakign out lol..... but its all good i suport this it soudnds good now let me wathc rest of video

  • I agree!!! A day without a gay is confused like a man in a dress.

  • I'm with you babe! My wife and I made a video about together. I hope you accept my video response. I subbed to you.

  • Gerbel farter

  • i know your gay but your soo fkn hot

  • Welll I didn't know about this :S but I still didn't go to school. I Stayed home and slept all day :(

  • lol i would but i cant miss school again ive already missed 6 i get suspended if i miss anotherday

  • The point we are making is "gay money" . Business's will be hurt. People will Notice......you say should'nt we do this all the time. Okay Mr. Perfect. when is the last time you protested anything and did you do everyday.

  • gays being out of control again!!

why wednesday? people have school and work, i'm not going to risk loosing my job or failing a class for something that probably wont even be remember. and good thing i didnt. if it was a well planed protest on a weekend i'll def join!!

    70's was the best!! woot!!

  • i just don't like the idea because "a day without gays", well, how do you even support that cause if you are not gay? No one who is not personally affected by that issue is going to risk their jobs, or disrupt their daily lives to help out the cause. I wish there were more things where heterosexuals, like myself, could show the world that we are for equality, we are against labels, and we accept!

  • ok so now that i have finished watching, i'll continue. You are right Dan, we, as a society, have become lazier in the past couple decades to really fight for what we believe in. I dont know what it is, maybe it's because we are more caught up in trivial things, like consumerism and propaganda. I dunno what could be done to revert this. Education i think is a vital front to fight against this ignorance, but how do you do that with so many unaccepting people out there who are against this cause?

  • I'm not gay, and i did it....

  • good for you then :) and no i am not being sarcastic! I really mean it!!!!! Many people, sadly, don't care!

  • God video Dan. Glad to see you are doing well. I don't like the concept either. We were talking about it at work today and given the economic system the timing isnt right, especially considering how many gays work in the retail sector. I know that was part of the point (to show how we impact the economy), but to be honest, there are other more pressing issues for most people right now.

I also agree that there are better ways to get the point across.

  • if there was a gay land i'd be so happy to go back

  • hahahaha btw starbucks might go out of buisiness cause of no gays hahaha

  • it could. or they could lose a LOT of money like with the Montgomery Bus Boycott

  • I am the only gay person in town that I know of, so i will be just watching videos at the local cafe but will not bye anything.

  • i didnt go 2 class 2day XD...i now im not supposed 2 be on the computer but im so bored!

  • to be completly honest I don't see the point of this day. I belive that it would be best to have a sit in or a rally or protest

  • w.e ur hot

  • While I can see your point, I really disagree with you. 500 characters is not enough to go into enough detail, but if you check out my blog, I'll post something up there later today.

  • Joshallenisme:

Strikes reduce the productivity of the business or firm.

Boycotts reduce the amount of goods or services purchased from the businesses or firms boycotted.

Participation gets people out of their home and acting out. If you are volunteering, you can spread the word that this is why you are volunteering. If you are protesting, well, that should be obvious.

All of these things get our voices heard. Day without an Immigrant worked the same way.

  • I totally agree with you dan. To me it makes no sense. Why do we have to go and disappear. We don't want that that would only make a few people happy. we don't want that. We protest to get respect. This event is just stupid and doesn't really say anything to others except. Look the gays are leaving YAY. I mean gosh We need to show what we believe in not make it disappear.

  • I am totally in support of THE DAY WITHOUT GAYS!!. I have called in sick today and have nothing planned.

I think this day is a Fabulous idea!!!!

  • Im going to volunteer at the local soup kitchen.

  • I dont think it was very well thought out but im going to partake in the event, but not by doing nothing, like I said I am voluntering at a local soup kitchen...

    at jointheimpact(dot)com

they are telling people to STRIKE: call in gay, shut down your business, or just take the day off.

BOYCOTT: don't buy anything, spend money or support the economy.

PARTICIPATE: Volunteer and/or organize a protest in your area

I just dont see what this is going to do :-(

  • Can you imagine a gayland!! haha!! I bet you it would never go to war...

Tbh... I dont like getting involved with gay rights, there is more to me than jus being gay?! if that makes sense... plus I dont think its healthy to constantly focusing on this one topic (like chriscrocker for example)

    Love ya Dan!

    Rob x

  • I still went to work but as for the rest of the day I'm just going to veg out.

  • OK, I agree taking a 'gay' day off isn't very significant in terms of making a big protest on a wider community level, but it's huge on a personal level - and very risky. I'm glad people are putting energy into trying to find the way forward and I think that's really important right now. Thanks for the video - this is more of that energy we need.

  • well im personally not going to do it... but instead of just telling ppl not to participate you should come up with an idea first.... its like you took action with out a plan...

  • this is not going to work... since being gay is not a physical trait that generally can not be determined via superficial inspection, people may not even know that you are skipping whatever you are skipping because your gay.

and I think before we can compete with the church in any way, we need to try and reach their monetary status. The amount of funding they have to pour into their anti-homosexual campaign is astounding. Then this movement may go somewhere.

  • I wish I watched this before I went to the MALL!! But anyway I kinda think the whole idea is pretty lame and nonsencincle

  • I think it's a good idea, I just have stuff to take care of...but I will try and NOT do anything real economic......

  • OK - I finished you video and now I am continuing my thoughts.....I think it's a good idea if EVERYBODY who is in the LBGT community or supports it participated, but like one comment below says "I've already got the day off...I plan to go shopping" is defeating the purpose - if EVERYONE did NOTHING - then big business would be hurt and Hollywood production and NEWs & information would be affected - but if you just gonna call in gay to go shopping - point defeated. You're right Dan....

  • Helloooo, bad economoy. Who thought it was a good idea to not go to work in a bad economy just before Christmas? I need the money, I have bills to pay. I would make even less of a difference if I were homeless. So you're totally right. Go to work folks and/or give what you can to folks who can't feed their family on Christmas because of the mass layoffs.

  • A general strike is only useful if there are enough people disapearing in the nations communities to be noticible, outside of my beloved SF where is this going to happen? Seems like a "write a letter to the senate and congress day" would have more effect. maybe Im just cynical today... anyhow I have a couple months off of work and a dr. appointment tomorrow so nobody would notice my protest even if.

  • is it weird that I already have the day off? I plan to go shopping actually

  • but i have finals in chool lol

  • i think it's ridiculous as well. hell, i need to go to work and make that money!

i'm gonna go to work and be fabulous as all hell

  • i'm a highschool student and it's near finals so i can't skip out. but i'm sure i'll think of something..

  • i have 2 exams tomorrow so i have to go to class! maybe i'll just wear my rainbow wrist band and tell people about what the day represents.

  • Honestly, when you mentioned this I thought you were going to derail some homophobic movement or something. I mean, I hate to say it, but "a day without gays" is what they want. They want us to disappear into the shadows again. And as you said, this isn't likely to draw much attention. You want attention, you've gotta be out there, visible and active. You've got to put it in their faces.

  • =P, Imagine if we had a Gayland to go back too

  • Completely agree with you

  • i think it sounds pointless, no one will care

  • THERE'S GONNA BE A TON OF PEOPLE PLAYING HOOKY.

GAY LAND??? EUROPE, breakdown the gay friendly states: The UK France Belgium Netherlands Switzerland Sweden Norway Denmark Germany Finland Spain and Iceland

  • Where did you get your 2nd class citizen shirt? i would love one!!!

i dont have an issue with the day, and i do like the fact that the people involved with this aren't just taking a day off, they are doing community service.

  • I totally agree with you.

  • yay. they are giving us what we want. they are leaving us alone and going away. too bad its only for a day. hey maybe someone should suggest a month or a year. that will teach us.

  • Dan, why are you not studying? Good vid! You always make us think.

  • I totally 100% agree with you. I think that its actually kinda ridiculous. It shouldn't be minimized to 1/365, and it should be an ongoing thing towards a civil movement. The only way that society is going to ever change is by exposure, not by taking ourselves out of the situation. I also hate how people think that putting something in their status or MSN name is considered "protesting". It's really not. People need to learn the difference between Facebook life and reality...

  • thats soooooooooooooooooooooo stupid! clearly the gays is what make the world turn and straight pople wont function right

  • I didn't even know that this was going on. I'd love to, but I have finals tomorrow. Although it would be rather intriguing to show the teachers that I cared about this more than I did finals. :|

  • Hmmm I never thought about that, I mean it sounds like a good idea.... but I'd say only if EVERYONE does it. It would be very ironic if we do it and they realize it made no difference with or without gays...

  • I thought this was 12/05/08? It was to say NO to prop 8

  • I work for family business.

  • i have to go to class, its finals for my chem class...

  • Ignore your rights and they'll go away. Equal rights now!!!!!

  • idk, im really thing about it but why, i know why, forget that, i just dont want to fall behind, like the shirt btw, and maybe i could make one that said, why dont i get equal rights, you do

  • It's supposed to show how the economy would be without homosexuals, to say "We are significant to this society."

But granted that the economy is already terrible, I don't think many can afford to skip work a day to participate. Or it wouldn't be wise.

I also don't think this is the way to approach it, it's not going to change people's mind's about anything. It's not going to show a rise in tolerance or acceptance, it's merely just a day when the gays are gone.

  • I'm gay and I agree with you Dan. Good for you having the courage to speak your mind. Many of my gay freinds do not think that the day is helpful, but they are so fearful of going against "what we are supposed to think" as gays. Good for you for thinking and speaking outside of the box! BTW: I am getting gay-married soon :)

  • Congrats :)

  • I tried to do it but found it extremely difficult in my community because the college was already out so i just didnt shop for the day!!! but hey it was a general protest i think if we continue we will succede

  • I don't think this will help anything, a protest for equal rights would be way more effective, and a continuos one. Totally agree with ya dan, excellent video!

  • Here in cali we're also having a protest to go with the event so yeah

I agree with you that we should be marching and protesting a lot more

  • omg i dident no about that day and im gay

  • Dan, I have to say that I like the types of videos like this from you; your thoughts are organized and you sound at ease.

  • its only not effective if u think its not i got all my friends to join me so i know that is alot of people so all we need is for us all to get are friends involved and we can make a difference

  • you made some great points. and i agree with you, i think the fight has gone from many in the community, whether it's because they feel helpless or whether it's because they are lazy. bottom line is, we need to be inspired to spark change. we need to have that same fire that our counterparts had in the beginning of the gay rights movement. i'm not sure how to get it back but we need to do something. also, i would sooo move to gayland! will there be drag shows and dance clubs? ;)

  • Day without Gays? Stupid idea.

  • i think it makes a statement but i don't think that it's gonna change much. the only way it would make a difference is if we could get every single gay american to participate and i don't see that happening...so yeah. good idea but not very effective, in my opinion.

  • I think it was meant to be a day to see how many people would realize a day without gay input and spending.

Me personally...I don't want it to fall on Dec. 10....Damn, I have to finish my Christmas shopping on time (and I buy online). It should be another time of the year. Then, I could take a day without working or spending to prove the point.

So, in a way I agree with you....yet, in another way I think it would be a good idea!

  • All USA Presidents and 99% of all politicians world wide are terrified of the 'gay issue'.

There should be a protest EVERY week of the whole year. A 'one day' protest is useless.
