I saw KC on the tour for the Beat record....it was at the state theater in Ann Arbor, Mi.......I was left SPEECHLESS......Wow, what a special band that was. I agree with others that Red IS the best crimson record, and so we can all agree the only lame KC lineup was that terrible Islands grouping.
How to explain, to someone who doesn't hear KC the way a devotee does, what KC sounds like to one who closely listens, and appreciates? How to explain our wonder in the intricate patterns that move apart then come together in ways first surprising and then pleasing?
I can't really put it into words, but if they can't hear what we fans hear in this song, perhaps they won't hear it anywhere in the KC collection.
I rediscovered K C while a DJ at VSU, GA. This was as original as the invention of Hard Bop Jazz ( Parker' Monk, Roach, Gillespie. and Miles ) I listen to this today. 30 years old!! and it still would sound as farout and original if I were to hear it for the first time in 2011. Think about this. Woodstock 1969. 30 years ago form Woodstock 1939. Imagine the changes. So drastic
I agree with Vaxkors95. Also listen to Vicarious. I Think Tool has a very full sound for only having 4 people in the band. Very intense music and they are BADASS live!
they used this allot of this stringed instrument call a "Stick" on this album,.. hammer on finger use,.. like a piano effect and a guitar neck with hammer on intonation ,... i think they really make it work too...
@randomprimate That is Tony Levin playing a mid range part on the 10 string Chapman "stick".......it is played by using the fingers of both hands and tapping all notes.........no fretting them.
Check Tony Levin stick on youtube search and you will find some demos on it.................
@DoubleWonderful Maynard doesn't write Tool's music, neither does this sound very much like Tool. There's like one hook that sounds a bit like one other hook from one Tool song :P
@finalfantasiservii THe hook you're talking about sounds exactly like Forty-Six and Two, by Tool. Tool drops it to ballsac level, but it sounds the same. Which is mighty fine and okay by me by the way.
@jhamler1 Yes, that is what I was referring to. It's a different riff, with different tone and a different tempo, by no means exactly the same. I don't know if you mean drop D when you say ballsac, but whatever. That part does remind me of Forty Six, but nothing Tool have done reminds me of King Crimson. My point was just how poor and convoluted his comment was, obviously thumbs-up whoring.
@finalfantasiservii You know, it's funny... I was gonna say "DROP-D" but, not being a musician myself, I didn't wanna sound stupid. :) Anyway, I heard the Tool song first, this is the first time I ever heard this King Crimson song, and the instant I heard that riff I was reminded of 46&2. But, like you say, that's about ALL Tool and KC have in common. Beyond being expert musicians, of course. :)
@vaxkors95 Thanks for the recommendation, I really enjoyed Ghost, pretty fantastic song. Mastodon are another one of those bands that I've been aware of for ages but have never properly listened to - obviously I need to pick up this album and start getting into them.
I suggest you do yourself a favour too and buy Lateralus or 10,000 Days, because Tool are an absolutely indispensable experience. Let it grow on you, so much of my favorite music I didn't like very much at first.
@flairmonkey It depends what you do with your instrument... In my opinion a band has to be rich in their sound... ELP has few instuments but Keith Emerson do lots of things with his keyboards, and Carl Palmer with his drums... but Tool doesn't have a "filled ambient" I like them, but it bores me after a while... and I think if they had more instruments, it would sound a lot better...
@vaxkors95 Check out Reflection, Disposition, and Third Eye, all by Tool. Then come back and tell me if those songs are what you like, if you want to :)
I have to agree with you 100% there, mate...I love the older KC, but when I heard Discipline...the first album with the line-up of Fripp, Buford, Belew and Levin...I was blown away! 1 of my ALL-TIME favourite albums!
@mentalrectangle I can't disagree with your statement. Not a clunker on the record. Amazing straight through. "Red" comes close, most of the other albums have one or two sleeply clunkers in there. And there was such a "sound" to the early/mid KC with the Cross' violin and Wetton's voice. This incarnation of King Crimson was a bit of a departure from the previous line-up that gave us: Larks' Tongues, Starless, and Red. Primus saw King Crimson play Berkeley in their formative years.
@mentalrectangle Precisely. 1969-1974 Crimson and 1981-1984 Crimson are quite different. Its hard to even consider them the same band without thinking of Robert's idea of King Crimson being a way of doing things.
@mrjesus1890 In fairness though, all the original members except Fripp were already gone by Larks, and the sound on Larks, Starless, and Red is still the same one on the Court. They even kept Bruford from that era on into the 80s and 90s. The change in sound was less about the people and more about the times, I think.
