Never was a pearl jam fan, still aren`t. But I always like a good cover and they did a excellant job. Eddie puts alot of heart and soul into it, he`s letting his emotions run out. Even so it`s a cover song and not one of his own he`s still treating it as if it were his and that`s a rarity. It also goes to show the song carries meaning to him.
@bighorn2004 If I recall correctly, they only played this song that night, I know they've played "Ole" and maybe two other songs at most on Late NIght with Jimmy Fallon.
Thank you Eddie Vedder, and naturally Pearl Jam. Thank you for singing this song, thank you for all your songs, thank you for introduce me to rock, thank you for changing my life in a way I want to live, thank you for let me see, think and understand that nobody understands life and not that mommy doesn't want me to fly but she is so affraid that I might crash. My favorite band covering a song from my least favorite band. What's the world coming too? I don't know how to feel... Even Pearl Jam couldn't make Pink Floyd sound good to me. Pink Floyd sucks, this song is awful!
Actually heard this for the first time this morning on the local radio station believe it or not! Outstanding song and a perfect rendition by Pearl Jam. Love it.
@EventHorizon63 Yeah I got you, the song MOTHER came out in 79 on the album THE WALL about 30 sum yrs ago, that was my point ,so no offense keep Pearl Jammin on with Eddie the Vedderman
@idcwhatmynameis100 ... O.o the funny thing is that eddie is actually a better vocalist now than he ever was. tone(which is now just amazing), pitch, range.... strange comment really.
@idcwhatmynameis100 I can see where you are coming from on this cover.... but really this is an amazing job here... showing a huge depth of emotion in that low end vocal range... which is SUPER low. lol. so yeah i can see what you are saying... it couldn't be more different from early 90s pearl jam... its really chill and not full of rage... so.. ya.. thats my take.
@idcwhatmynameis100 do you really think the song needs that energy? personally him going all out like in the early days would not fit for this song. This song requires a reserve that he nails in this cover. I really like the more mellow approach hes been doing, especially on the song THE END. its got a tragic beauty to it.
i can see how people could of been haters of pearl jam in the early years dispite there clear brilliance because it was new and the grunge era but they have proven to be an enduringly amazing band that speaks to the heart and soul of every human being that exsists. imagine being this band, this man, knowing what you have accomplished and contributed to the souls of people in this world!? FUCKING BRILLIANT!
@keef78 i understand you feel emotional about this performance and it is a wonderful one at that but, eddie/prink floyd speaking out to every heart and soul is a bit overrated.

Man.. this is Eddie, Pearl Jam... some of the finest in music that came out in the last 30 years. It ain't my chemical romance or Daddy Yankee. This goes out to all of those that criticize the Grunge movement, Eddie, Dave Grohl, Maynard J. Keenan, and many others are the best and most talented musicians around nowadays. Period.
I M P E C A B L E. que mas se puede decir de Pearl Jam?. Y pensar que en Noviembre los tenemos acá en La Plata (Argentina), espectacularrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
My favorite Pink Floyd song...but this cover isn't doing it for me. No one makes it hurt quite like Roger. Don't get me wrong, I like Pearl Jam, and Eddie's voice is gorgeous, but...this song requires a certain level of personal attachment and pain to work. This cover just seems super-reverent; Eddie sounds like he's singing a grunge holy text, not an indictment and cry for help.
@a92lovin i love the pink floyd version better, but you have to appreciate vedders version, he made it in his style, and you have to respect that cause if it sounded the same, then what would be the point
@davidjames66 I don't really want it to sound the same. But this song is about a long-born pain. That's something Eddie has, and one listen-through of "Alive" is enough to hear that. It just isn't coming through, here, though; it's almost like he's having too much fun, or just feels like he's singing something that changed his life for the better. I'm not saying that can't be true; I know The Wall changed me for the better. But...I still need that emotion present in the song. To each his own.
A hater is going to handle you, Gilmore sings the song not Waters and Gilmore sings the song much better! If Vedder didn't get so raspy, the cover would have been amazing! He needed to clean it up! It's the equivalent of him singing Nothingman with a growl!
@j0r6391 I think you're right, but a lot of Pink Floyd lovers know Roger Waters hasn't the best voice in the world. It's his creative genius we admire. So, no issue with your comment.
@drummermoon Vedder sounds pretty emotional as well, he could be screaming in a "Evenflow" way, but I think he nails this pretty well, not that I have anything against Waters, I think both are brilliant
Eddie screws up lyrics all the time! Even the lyrics to his own songs. I was at a concert where they stopped in the middle of a song and started over b/c he screwed up. It's one of the reasons we love him, he is not perfect and does not pretend to be.

That being said, Michael Jordan did not hit every game winning jump shot he took for the Bulls, on occasion he missed! EV missed here! I think hell just froze over for me saying that but, my defense is, for a good portion of the song, I thought PJ brought Christian "The Dark Knight" Bale to sing the song!

They made it there own like any good artist doing a TRIBUTE should. Vedder seems to want to try different things with his voice these days. I would describe this as a 'folksy, woodsy, fractured sound', and i love it. Very warm.
Very nice. Gets better with repeated listens. In all honesty, i couldn't tell how many lyrics he messed up because I forgot them myself. He did good enough though. Nice cover.
Great performance. So he wasn't 100% on the lyrics, big deal, they didn't screw it up in my view. And like Eddie said at one of thier oz shows after stuffing up big time: "at least you know we're not lip syncing".
@BGWaugh Seriously, cmon people it's "LIVE" and he's human. I would love to see the people complaining about the lyrics try and sing this song live...Great Job PJ
@AdamCito2010 I said it was a great performance. PJ are my fave band so it would take something BIG for me to bag them. All I was saying was that the lyrics weren't sung as they were written to the letter, and to me (unlike others) that's not an issue. Eddie's forgotten lyrics, or messed up his timing plenty of times, but he knows how to pick things back up and keep going, and then joke about it.
Great cover, Eddie always has his heart in his vocal cords!
