Durand pelea limpio, es duro, es macho, Leonard es mas alto, tiene más alcance, es rápido, técnico, golpea pero luego amarra; en conclusión Durand es mejor boxeador.
Duran was tough...he made leonard fight his fight but leonard gave in. In the middle of the ring leonard was the better boxer. I like how duran put pressure on him tho
Simple: RD always had an answer for SRL's attacks he will take or roll with the punches and come back with something, but when SRL was geeting hit he mostly ran or held RD's arms not always retaiate. Do the math RD hit a lot harder than SRL. Who wins? Close fight but the ref. helped a lot, Remember "SRL IS HOLDING ON TO HARD" the ref allowed SRL tie RD arms the whole fight to control RD's offence and neck pulling from SRL and still no warning. When SRL was hurt "THE REF IS VERY INEFFECTIVE"
SRL was a horrible fighter but a good boxer. He was a pitty pat puncher with no power. He could beat you on points and thats it. Duran beat his ass in this fight and showed who was the best. Leonard held all night
It's amazing the shots Duran takes in this fight. His legs of stone are the only thing that allowed him to finish. Of course, they made it impossible for him to win the second fight because he was so slow, but they're damn strong. Those two uppercuts around 7:40 are bombs, and Duran buckled a bit, but recovered quickly.
I don't know how he finished this fight with the beating he takes every round. And those strong legs keep him moving forward all the time.
@bertelliish How little you know boxing, SRL never beat Dura in a real fight, he created a circus to win the 2nd, he demanded a quick rematch to fight an out of shape RD, bigger ring 24x24 and bigger gloves to run like a beatch. Rd knew he had no chance to win this fight, thats why he quit. Heagler was a nat. 160 and it was a close figh. If RD was a nat 160 and Heagler a nat 135...imaging the outcome of that fight, RD would have killed Heagler, RD was fighting much bigger boxers and legents,
@rickyp4ever your man was a quitter understand englito amigo, a fukin woman thats what he was, srl was a man not a woman like your fukin latino gayman lol
@bertelliish Look how a quitter beats your 147 chAMP IN A REAL FIGHT NOT A CIRCUS comming from 135 jejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejejjejejejejejejej YOUR BOY WAS SCARED CRIED FOR HUGE RING TO RUN LIKE A PUSSY. i RATTER QUITTING THAN CHEATING AT LEAST WHEN YOU QUIT YOU TRIED BUT WHEN YOU CHEAT YOU DON`T EVEN TRY IS ALL THER FOR YOU MY PU**Y JEJEJEJEJEJEJEJEJEJEJEJEJJJE Hey by the way look how many people accuse SRL of been a cheater is not only me!!!!!!!!!and a cherry picker
@rickyp4ever Calm down girl. Leonard fought toe to toe with the quitter and still duran couldnt put him down??? then in the return leonard made him quit!! Now that is a beat down fool.
Say what you like duran was getting beat up and knew srl will ko the gay cunt.
Who do people remember now? they remember srl making that woman QUIT lol lol
@bertelliish He also gave Duran a beating this fight. He lands four times for every time Duran lands, but judges LOVED Duran. Did you know the second fight was scored very, very close? Did he win a round? Was he even competitive in a round? Look at the scoring for his fight with Benitez.
Duran never recovered from the beatings he took in his fights with Leonard. He was never the same fighter again.
@counterstriving He took a worst beating in this fight than he had before. He got hit with very hard body shots the entire fight, by a guy that was a pretty good puncher, with great stamina. He also took a decent amount of shots in the head. It wasn't one round, it was 15 rounds of constantly getting hit by a guy. The 14th he got hammered to the head, and the 15th you can see he's just submissive from the beating. This was an extremely active fight.
@TA152H01 I really don't see what you mean by "submissive." OK both guys took a lot of hard shots in this fight, but I don't think it's at the level where you can say so-and-so "wasn't the same fighter" afterward, etc. Anyway the punishment was about equal, more or less.
@counterstriving He submitted to Leonard's will, and gave up a round he should have been fighting very hard for. It was a close fight, Leonard was dominating the later rounds, and he was the champ. When you give up, you have submitted to the stronger man. He was lucky it didn't cost him the decision.
Leonard lands many more shots to Duran, it's not close to equal. Regardless, Leonard went on to be Hearns, Duran never was a top fighter after Leonard 1.
@TA152H01 - Quote..."He took a worst beating in this fight than he had before. He got hit with very hard body shots the entire fight..."
in his autobiography, Leonard himself says that he, quote - "didn't come close to hurting Duran". This is coming from a man who not only hated Duran, but who has a real problem admitting any kind of flaw. Duran never 'submitted' to Leonard's will in this fight, he had the mental edge from start to finish and he knew he won even before the final bell.
@KarlHeinzofWpg Hurt in boxing terms means to stun, or have another fighter in trouble. I never said he hurt Duran in that sense. He gave him a beating the entire fight, mostly with body shots, and Duran quit in the 15th round. Your last line is a mistake. His own corner screamed at him to fight more in the last round. Duran couldn't, he was beaten. No one gives up a last round in a very close fight, against a very popular champion. He had no choice. He submitted.
@TA152H01 - I'm guessing you don't box, but just watch the videos. Hurt means hurt. I see plenty of times when Leonard was hurt, very few times when Duran was hurt, or stunned. Leonard didn't give Duran a beating, the fight was a brawl, which is exactly what Duran wanted to happen and exactly what Leonard and his corner trained NOT to happen. Duran suckered SRL into his type of fight with his pre-fight antics. This isn't my opinion, it's Sugar Ray Leonard's and Angelo Dundee's.
@KarlHeinzofWpg Actually, you're wrong in your first assumption, and you're dead wrong with your last.
When you say a fighter hurt another fighter, you mean stunned, or did something extraordinary beyond landing punches solidly.
This definitely wasn't the style Leonard should have fought, but he did, and he did it well. To the point Duran lost the last three round he was so beaten up. Did the ref do that?
You're trying to redefine 'hurt' so that your original statement isn't wrong, but it is wrong as per by Leonard himself saying he never 'hurt' Duran in this fight. Clearly you don't understand the term, or you are claiming Leonard doesn't understand the term. Hurt doesn't mean stunned. I've been hurt plenty of times and I've been stunned, they're different things. If you've ever been in a boxing match you would know that. But you haven't, have you.
I always thought Germans were smart, you're changing my assessment.
I never said Leonard hurt him. They aren't different things. Maybe you don't understand English as well as you think. When someone is stunned, it's said they are hurt. You can be hurt other ways, like a hard body shot, but generally, it means stunned or something like it.
I'm not changing your assessment. Though you will, to try and keep from looking even more foolish. You should just admit you have it wrong, then get to a gym and actually learn something before commenting on it. For example, you imply that Duran slowed down in the last two rounds because of the pounding. Angelo Dundee says it was because "he was sure of an imminent victory", which explains his taunting of SR. So again, you have it all wrong.
@KarlHeinzofWpg I meant that Germans were smart, you dumb ass. Duh. Don't speak English well? Understand the word "context"?
You're wrong again. Duran didn't slow down Round 14, he was quite active in it. He just lost it.
Round 15, of a very close fight, against a popular and great champion, with your corner screaming at you to throw punches, and you don't? You just give it away? You don't even make an effort?
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're dumb, so you're probably not German. You're so dumb, you didn't realize I wrote that before you said you were Canadian? You're a retard or something.
To prove it, you think Duran knew the scorecards? How stupid are you? You never know with fights like that, especially against a champ. Scoring could go either way, and even the announcers thought Leonard won. You'd give away a round in such an important fight? Are you THAT stupid?
@TA152H01 - You would realize (if you weren't so young) that resorting so quickly to "stupid, dumb, retard, bla bla" comments is only revealing your own insecurity on this topic. Your embarrassment would go away quicker if you just admit you are wrong and learn from your mistake.
No Duran didn't know the scorecards, but he certainly felt he won. As I quoted from Dundee's biography "My View from the Corner", Duran was "sure of imminent victory". I guess you think Dundee is a retard. Right? :)
@KarlHeinzofWpg And you'd realize that you're a hypocrite because you're quick to throw insults, but, really, you're very stupid.
How could Dundee know this more than anyone else in the ring. He had a connection with Duran's mind? He couldn't know, no one but Duran could. His corner certainly didn't. The announcers felt he needed to win. All the people commented after the fight that he lost the last rounds, and many felt Leonard won.
@TA152H01 "And you'd realize that you're a hypocrite because you're quick to throw insults, but, really, you're very stupid."
More projecting of your own faults onto other people? Aren't you using words like dumbass and retard, etc etc..?
It's ok, it doesn't bother me. I recognize it as your insecurity. You would be able to face that if you ever start to box. I see it all the time, young kid comes in all arrogant, gets humbled, eventually grows. You're still at stage one.
@KarlHeinzofWpg Actually, I really think you're a retard. You're assessment of me is completely off, because I'm not a kid, and when I was, my reflexes were so good I never did get humbled.
And that's why I know why Ray Leonard kept his hands down, and you don't. You think he was hurt, because you can't understand, and disregard the fact he then threw a hard left immediately after. You don't get it. You're just a blow hard.
@TA152H01 - " You're assessment of me is completely off, because I'm not a kid, and when I was, my reflexes were so good I never did get humbled."
Well that is surprising, because you certainly act like a kid. So you must be a very immature man. But why don't you come right out and say whether or not you have ever boxed? What avoid that? Have you boxed? You say your reflexes were so good - in what combat sport?
Again, read the first post when you asked me. I answered it there. I also would have no idea why Leonard kept his hands low if I never did. I never liked bringing mine up. It's also very hard to block a jab thrown from down low. You'll never be able to do it, you're obviously slow-witted. You need very good reflexes, and you need to be able to block shots to your head with your shoulder. Leonard, by the way, had both.
@TA152H01 - LOL, ok. I see you're getting pretty upset. You can't seem to answer anything without saying things like retard, or dumbass or slow-witted. It's been a long time since I was in grade school so I think we're done here. If you could actually make an argument you wouldn't have to rely on that. But it's obvious that you can't, because you haven't. There's a plus side though, maybe this little schooling will encourage you to get back to the gym. I hope so. Good luck with that.
@TA152H01 some pros drop their hands to lure a fighter forward so they can counter punch or capitalize on their mistakes. people tend not to do it as much in the am's because every tough/jab counts as pts. In the pros..its all about damage.
@KarlHeinzofWpg You can have a feeling, but would you give up the 15th round without a fight for this feeling? Of the most important fight of his career?
I never said he was stunned, intimidated or hurt. He was beaten up the whole fight, and was exhausted from the body shots, and his own exertions. He couldn't win the round. Leonard had more left.
@TA152H01 - "with your corner screaming at you to throw punches, and you don't?"
If you had ever been in a boxing match you'd know that corners always scream at you to throw punches. Always. While you're throwing, they scream....throw punches.
"You don't even make an effort?" - So now you want people to believe that Duran wasn't even making an effort? How far out on a limb are you prepared to go here? What will you claim next, that he actually left the ring?
@TA152H01 - "Are you feebleminded?" LOL more projecting.
"It's obvious he couldn't win it." but he did win. He felt he had done enough to win it and he was right. Actually, his strategy was probably the only way he could have won against SR. He lured him into the classic Duran brawl, a place SR should never have gone. He basically brought him down to his level where he thrives. He knocked the hell out of him and won in the end. Not a pretty strategy, but it worked. It could only work once.
@KarlHeinzofWpg Dude, you're really stupid. You don't understand context?
I was talking about the last round!!!! He couldn't win it, he was too tired. Everything in that remark indicates I'm talking about the last round. Why can't you understand anything? Are you reading impaired?
You're too stupid to be interesting to me. You don't even understand English well. It's frustrating dealing with idiots like you.
@TA152H01 - "at 9:37 Leonard is hurt , at 9:42 he is stunned." <--further to this.
Why is Leonard's left hand down after 9:42? Why did he let Duran walk in and tag him with the right? Anyone who has boxed knows exactly why, because we've all been there. His hand is down because he CAN'T raise it after Duran's body shot. It's not that he forgets to raise it, he physically can't until his muscles unseize. His jab is useless until the end of the round. This happens a lot to SRL during this fight.
@KarlHeinzofWpg You are completely clueless. Leonard kept his left down before that. Boxers, which you CLEARLY are not, block with the shoulder, which Leonard does extremely well. He can't lift his arm, but he can throw hard body shots? Are you completely clueless?
He wasn't stunned at all during that round, and he hit Duran with the cleaner shots. Duran's shots late in the round were not hard.
@TA152H01-"He can't lift his arm, but he can throw hard body shots?"
So even when I point out a specific second in the video you still can see when someone is hurt AND unable to throw for the rest of the round? Actually, I knew you wouldn't be able to see it, or if you did, admit it. Perhaps you're young and feel if you just keep bullshitting then people will come around to your inane assessment of this fight. You know, the one where you disagree with both Angelo Dundee AND Sugar Ray Leonard.
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're not smart enough, or wise enough, to realize you don't know much. You assume anyone disagreeing with you, isn't seeing it right, because you're infallible.
Actually, you don't know much of anything. He wasn't keeping his arm down because he couldn't bring it up, he threw a hard left hook shortly after. You didn't notice it? One blocks the left side of his face with a shoulder, especially when someone is going to the body, or you want to come up. Learn something.
@TA152H01 - "You assume anyone disagreeing with you, isn't seeing it right, because you're infallible."
You're not just disagreeing with me, you're disagreeing with Sugar Ray Leonard and Angelo Dundee.
About the "hard left". So you didn't see the wince? No, I didn't think you'd notice that either. A boxer would see those things easily. But then, you aren't one and seem to have trouble admitting it. I'll give you another chance.
@KarlHeinzofWpg I don't see Leonard saying anything you are. I see you making crap up, and then misunderstanding like you're an idiot.
Leonard thought he won the fight. I was alive then. I didn't like Leonard, but after seeing the fight, felt he got robbed and gained respect for him. Many thought he got robbed.
Look it up in Sports Illustrated. You can still see the old articles, if you're smart enough to know how to do a search. So get someone to help you.
@TA152H0 -"don't see Leonard saying anything you are."
I'll give you the book and the page number of any quote I provide. You can look it up in your own boxing library.Wait. You don't actually have one of those do you? A collection of books by, and about, the great fighters.
It's ok to think he got robbed. Nothing wrong with that. But it's not ok to make things up, which is what you are doing. I didn't like Leonard OR Duran. But I wouldn't lie about them if I didn't have anything real to say.
@KarlHeinzofWpg The point is, your quotes don't say anything regarding the argument. You quote Leonard saying how he felt after the fight. I never said he didn't get hit at all. I said Duran took a beating.
Leonard actually said Duran didn't hurt him after the first couple of rounds. He said he went into the fight in a daze of sorts, and the punch that hurt/stunned him in the 2nd round didn't have any effect later on. Do a search on SI, maybe you'll learn something.
@TA152H01 - "No one gives up a last round in a very close fight, against a very popular champion. He had no choice. He submitted."
Duran didn't give up, he was gassed from the 14 previous rounds of brawling with a champion of Leonard's quality. He had no choice but to keep up the pressure all fight because if he hadn't SRL would of realized the mistake he was making. Things is, SR was gassed too and had no power in his punches in the last rounds. Again, that's SRL talking, not me.
@KarlHeinzofWpg He took such a beating, of course he was tired. That's my point! Duh.
Leonard landed HARD body shots towards the end of the round. He had power in the last three rounds, or the ref was hitting Duran's head and making sweat fly off it.
Obviously, you're not a boxer, but the way you can tell is the other guy's head. If someone's head moves a lot, and sweat flies, it's a good shot. He landed some, especially in the 13th and 14th. Only late in the 15th did he.
@TA152H01 - "He took such a beating, of course he was tired. That's my point! Duh."
He didn't take a beating. They only reason you want to say that is that you are trying to appear like you know something about the subject, when clearly you don't. You should realize that this is obvious to anyone who has actually boxed. If you don't have the experience to see that he was never 'hurt' in the video you should take the word of Leonard himself.
@KarlHeinzofWpg You don't know boxing, why are you presenting yourself like you do?
If you box a hard, grueling fight, you wear out over time. Body shots don't have to hurt an opponent to wear him out. In fact, you don't often see a big body shot knock a guy down, or have a huge effect, although sometimes it happens. It wears a guy down.
Duran got POUNDED every round, and he wore out.
You're clueless. Are you eight and fantasize about boxing?
@TA152H01- "Duran got POUNDED every round, and he wore out."
You're sticking with your original story because you're not man enough to just admit that you are wrong according to the people close to that fight. In fact you have it exactly backwards, it was SRL who was "pounded" every round. He told George Kimball for his book Four Kings - "I was mentally and physically exhausted. I'd never taken such a physical beating. The doctor had to come up to my room later to drain blood from my ears".
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're a very illogical person, and not very bright.
I didn't say Leonard didn't ever get hit. I said Duran DID get pounded every round. A dumb person would think they are mutually exclusive.
Leonard fought every minute of every round. Of course he was exhausted. Duran hit hard too. On the other hand, Duran was done by the 14th. Done! He couldn't even fight the 15th. He gave it up.
@TA152H01 - Just to clarify. "Stunned" is a punch that effects you mentally. It's when your brain gets shaken up and you can't focus for a second (or longer). You don't even feel hurt, just confused. "Hurt" is purely physical, it's when you're clear headed but your body doesn't obey your brain, all you can do is freeze for a second (or longer). For example, at 9:37 Leonard is hurt to the body, at 9:42 he is stunned.
In boxing, a fighter is said to be hurt by a punch when he's stunned. You're obviously not American, and don't know the parlance.
Being hurt in other contexts means something else. In boxing terms, when they say a guy has been hurt, he's been stunned most of the time. Of course, it could mean a hard body shot, or something like that, but most of the time they mean he's stunned.
Don't try to teach me English, and I won't teach you German.
@TA152H01 - I'm not German, I'm Canadian. My English is excellent. The reason you're harping on the word "stunned" and "hurt" is because you know that you have been proven wrong and you're just trying to wiggle and squirm your way out of it by redefining words so that your original assessment of this fight doesn't look so silly. Meanwhile everyone who has actually been in a boxing ring is having a laugh at your expense. BTW - you dodged the question. You've never boxed have you.
@KarlHeinzofWpg It's not actually, because you haven't boxed, and you still don't realize I did answer your question.
I'm not redefining words, I just know what they mean. By your brain-dead definition, stunned would pertain only to the head, and hurt would pertain only to the body. It's not so.
Listen to announcers. When they say he got hurt with that punch, they are saying he's stunned or dazed when it's to the head. Why don't you know this? It's not even arguable.
@TA152H01-"Don't try to teach me English, and I won't teach you German."
What I don't understand is why don't you let someone teach you boxing? If you're actually interested in the subject why not go down to your local club and learn something? That way you won't have to pretend on the internet, which makes you a sort of loser dontcha think? I can tell by the way you talk about fights that you don't even have a basic grasp of what boxing is. You speak like you're still in high school. Are you?
@KarlHeinzofWpg Dude, the only reason you watch boxing is to watch men next to each other.
I've forgotten more than you'll ever know. You're a typical blowhard that thinks his opinion is the only one that matters, and tries to be patronizing to gain an upper hand. It doesn't work with me. I see you're a dolt.
Your insights are all wrong. You don't understand boxing at all. You don't even know why Leonard didn't bring up his left (I wouldn't have either he did the right thing).
@TA152H01 - "Your insights are all wrong. You don't understand boxing at all. "
Projecting your own faults onto someone else will not solve your problem. All you need to do is actually train in boxing. Then you'll know what "hurt" is and what "stunned" is. I've explained why you were wrong. I've backed it up with quotes from SRL and Dundee. I've pointed out video to illustrate. All you've been able to do is plug your ears and repeat the same falsehoods over and over. You're failing.
@KarlHeinzofWpg Your quotes have nothing to do with the questions. You're completely illogical.
You don't know that when a guy gets stunned they refer to him as getting hurt? Are you a complete dunce? Have you ever seen boxing gloves in person? By your own, idiotic, definition, only a body shot could be said to hurt. It's not so. You're so ignorant.
@TA152H01 "Your quotes have nothing to do with the questions. You're completely illogical."
You think quoting SUGAR RAY (the fighter) and ANGELO DUNDEE (his corner) as they are talking about this very fight you can't seem to understand - has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTIONS. Well, that says it all right there doesn't it. You're determined to remain wrong indefinitely rather than man up and admit you're wrong. Ya know, the pain of embarrassment is temporary, but being a coward is for life.
@KarlHeinzofWpg I can come up with quotes that have nothing to do with anything.
Your brain is unfocused. You can't think logically. When someone says Duran took a beating, you make the logical fallacy that if Leonard said Duran hit hard, Duran didn't take a beating. It's stupid, but that's what you're doing.
Duran got pounded the whole fight. It's that simple. Leonard took shots too. No one said otherwise.
@TA152H01 - "Your brain is unfocused. You can't think logically."
Nope. I'm pretty focused. However I can see that you're getting quite frustrated with your replies. That will happen when you don't have anything on your side to back up your arguments, which were few and pitiful.
Luckily there is no need for me to make a career out of educating you, especially when you seem immune to it. All I can do is give you some advice, try to actually box for a while before you attempt to analyze fights.
Yall fools need ta pipe down on all this debating about who was better clearly duran won the fight sugar got the next one but at the end of the day fellas relax and admire the 80s days and the fantastic 4 sugar, duran, hagler, and "hitman" hearns love your favorite but respect the other homies favorite too JUST A SUGGESTION!
SRL stood toe to toe the whole f'n night . Can anybody who knows boxing say SRL wasn't a bad ass. SRL haters you have to give it up it was a brawl. SRL didn't quit when it got hard that is why I put srl ahead of duran.
SRL stood toe to toe the whole f'n night . Can anybody who knows boxing say SRL wasn't a bad ass. SRL haters you have to give it up it was a brawl. SRL didn't quit when it got hard that is why I put srl ahead of duran.
Duran really got stunned by those right uppercuts Leonard bombed him with. Nothing serious, but his legs were wobbly for a few seconds. Some of it is he's tired though. Probably in the first round, he'd have absorbed the bombs without buckling a little.
it also got better for duran as he moved on further into his looong career, and gained more popularity n fans than any latin fighter,..ever. he's loved,..actually loved, the world over,..like Ali is. Diifference is Ali stood for something different, as in social issues, whereas people just simply love roberto for his charisma n story, typical underdog as in lil man took on the big guys, and won,..that kind of thing. he's alot of what people wish they could be or been. it's all good .
I agree i much prefer a nonosense fighter like Duran or Hagler who went to fight not run around making faces @ people and your right Leonard knew in a 3rd fight Duran would be in top shape and Leonard did not want another beating like the 1 he got in Montreal. The judging in the 1st fight was not great they got the decision right but it was not that close.
Just the more i hear these commentators,..the m ore i get nauseated,..they actually cry out for leonard , as in hurting duran or nailing him with this n that,..even the phantom 'bolo' punch that ray clearly missed,..yet ferdie goes "riiiiiight on the button!",..typical of media bias towards the american fighters that still exists today, tho alil less, especially in manny's case,.he get alot of good press here in america. Only the good announcers gave credence to roberto in announcing his fights.
me personally , i didnt like leonard cuz of both the media hype and his way of manipulation of the sport, let alone style, just not my kind of style i preferred to watch. ray was tough as they come tho, no doubt. talk about money?..nobody made more than ray during the eighties,..by far. I wouldnt mention delahoya in either sentence of duran or leonard.
yea well ur dislike for duran shows,..cuz the truth the third fight didnt happen for 8 yrs was ray was bitter about duran tainting his victory in new orleans my friend, wasnt about monwy at all. He also feared the press would ruin it,.as wellas his fear of duran goin into super-training mode for the rematch to win back his good name. ray felt duran had evenn more incentive to come in in top shape, and he feared that. wouldda been a helluva fight..
Can't beleive yu gys are sooo pro leonard in this fight. Duran 'controlled' the fight, the tempo, forcing leonard all over the ring, punishing him mercilessly on the ropes, right hand counters to his face, hurting him numerous times. not once did Duran actually seem shaken, yet ray fought his ass off, making this one of the best fights ever. i give leonard his due simply cuz he proved his mettle, not just as another 'pretty boy', but this was Duran's moment in time, to show it all to the world.
I agree Duran was an animal on this night and there is no way Leonard would have ever beat him when he was in shape.Chicken Lenoard even admitted he knew Duran partied between fights and thats why he forced the immidiate rematch.Something chicken Leonard would not give Duran another firght for 9 more years.
something about Duran quitting in the 2cnd fight put off promoters and the fans from spending money on a third right away. But after Duran beat Davey moore and then gave Hagler a good fight the third SRL Duran fight could make money. Fight game was by then was ALL about what fight could sell. It's all about the money.
Also, Duran was exposed the second fight. He knew he had no chance against Leonard, and Leonard knew how easy it was to beat him by moving. The scary thing is, why didn't he know that the first fight? De Jesus moved a lot when he raped Duran, and the lead-legged Panamanian got totally outclassed by a guy that wasn't close to Leonard's talent.
Even so, I'm watching these rounds and Duran's head moving back, and wonder what the judges saw. Of course, they had the second fight close too.
One of the talents Duran had was he played mind games well too. In the first fight because Duran baited SRL so well SRL went in bent on out slugging Duran and proving he was just as a bad ass Duran was . 2cnd fight SRL fights in his style and Duran can't hang period. Had he fought that way the 1rst fight we might have got to see SRL knock Duran out, because no way in hell does Duran quit like that in the debut bout
@northpoint43m Great fight IMO. A true classic. Either way, Leonard fought bravely and stood in there with Duran, making it a great brawl. This beats anything I've seen from Gayweather.
Sugar "Gay" Leonard - the biggest runner & holder in boxing!!! Never gave quick rematches. Fought Hagler with every advantage he could get. 22 ft ring - instead of 18 ft. 10 oz gloves instead of 8 oz. 12 round fight instead of a 15 rounds. Then he ran and held the whole fucken night. What was sadder - is Richard Steele warned his about 50 times to stop holding and never took a point away. Sugar "Gay" ...the biggest fraud in boxing -next to Oscar De La "Hoto"!!!
either you don't know boxing or were too young to see hmm the Olympics or SRL getting beat up by hearns then knocking him out or you just need attention.Any way, you're way wrong about both De Lahoya and SRL But some people let their personal dislike for certain types of people to distort reality. If the shoe fits wear it well
Ray fights durans style in the 1rst and gave him hell and could of won maybe did win. ray vs duran 2cnd fight it was ray fighting in his style and whuuupin the snot out out the hands that QUIT
You can see throughout the fight that both fighters try to play head games and gain dominance. Leonard with his clowning and pushing the ref away, and Duran with his incessant pushing and brawling. Duran falls for none of Leonard's nonsense, but at the same time, he's confused by the fact Leonard whacks him every time he thinks he's finally got him.
It's not until the 14th round one fighter dominates. Duran has no choice, but he tries to use bravado as he gets dominated.
@GBeret83 He sure was. He's the only fighter I've ever seen quit in the middle of fight because he was looking bad. Really tough dude. Even in this fight he gave away the last round in a close fight. Yup, tough guy.
Damn. Duran's right hand was fast. Leonard of course is known for his speed. But you see how fast Duran is also in how he is able to counter in between Leonard's flurries.
It's a good fight. Duran looked good in 2,3, and 4, and Leonard took over in 5, 6,7 and 8. It's amazing such a talented boxer like Leonard can get into a slugfest with an animal, and not give an inch. Don't forget, Leonard won the last three rounds of the fight.
And don't forget the second fight, when Duran emasculated.
TA152H01 ; you are so right. Duran was great but SR was better. You know styles make fights and SR gave Duran his chance in the 1rst one but when SR fought to his strength Duran couldn't compete. SR beat the 2 best of that era Duran and Hearns. Hearns put Duran to sleep. SR beat them both and took their best shots. SR is King of the hill of that group.
Yes, without a doubt. Leonard had so many tools, he could fight anyone, in any style. I've never before, or since, seen a fighter that did so many things well. We saw what happened. In the first fight, they fought Duran's style, and many still had Leonard winning (myself included). In the second, Leonard made him look absurd. Hearns raped him, the same guy Leonard beat.
Duran was a very good fighter, but he wasn't on the same level as Leonard. Would Leonard have quit like a dog?
1st and 2nd fights, Duran dominated the first, & SRL def outclassed Duran in the
2nd, but if you are talking about best in the 80's, I would have to say Hagler hands down. SRL may have won the fight between them in '87, but I think (and so do many others for that matter) that Hagler won, and there was some suspect judging involved, even though SRL used last minute bursts to "steal rounds", as I've heard Teddy Atlas quote.
robertina duran quit because he was a coward with no balls,he could never adjust to his opponents should they switch games during fights
duran did well if he knew what you was going to do but if you changed it up a little,he was a clueless little beaner
duran was exposed in the second leonard fight as a coward and a fraud and he was also exposed as a boxer against bums like kirland laing and robbie simms
Listening to the Leonard ass kissing announcers is so one sided its almost commical. Talking about Leonards courage - while getting his butt whupped, and his amazing hand speed - when his punches had absolutley no impact on Duran -disgusting. Leonard got has ass beat.
I love Duran he was a real fighter if Leonard wasn't holding he'd have got his ass knocked out.Thats y he ran and made faces in the rematch @ an out of shape Duran.
so you are saying duran didn't give boxing fans his best in the second fight ? you are so right he cheated every one who paid to see that fight; a warrior going out on his shield. Duran robbed us of seeing him get knocked out by SR. It was going to happen but he punkd out. Hearns got him though. Face down flat line. Sr beat them Both and took thier best
Ya in 23 rounds he never hurt Duran but running around the ring making faces had Duran ready to go.Leonard gave him the beating of a lifetime.Such crap they only ever fought once in top shape and if Leonard didn't hold so much in the 1st fight he would have been knocked out.
Isn't that the truth, why Leonard wasn't even warned for holding. At least a point should be taken, all he does is hold and Padilla slaps at Duran's gloves. Pacheco can't wait to tell us "how great a fighter SRL is" Hate the announcers, can't stand the ref and SRL wanted this strategy. He wanted to grab and frustrate, he miss judged Duran's patience.
To all of the boxing experts, please let me know what you think about the up-coming Pacman - Cotto fights. As a PR I'm going for Cotto, I think he is a solid fighter but my wife/co-workers are filipino so you know who they are going for.
ray's game plan was to hold an arm in each clinch and swing away...fuck him...same to those disgusting commentators who are just licking 'sugar's balls.
By Leonard's first retirement, he was 32-1, 7-1 in title fights and 3-1 vs HOFers. By Pryor's first retirement he was 36-0, 11-0 in title fights and 3-0 vs HOFers, with one of the best KO streaks in recent times. So yes, they're similar, only Pryor has a better title record, showed more career durability and dominated his division more thoroughly than Leonard did any of his. The difference is Leonard's well choreographed comeback which padded his record.
dominated his division? look at the division once again. 140? not even 1 of the original 8? and yes your right Leonard's career was very well manipulated & choreographed.
Actually, the 140lb division has a much longer history than many realise, dating back to the 1920s - Kid Berg, Barney Ross, Tony Canzoneri, Nicolino Locche, Carlos Ortiz, JC Chavez were all champions there. It's just not been as prominent as the original 8. And Pryor was only there in the first place because he was being ducked at lightweight.
Why talk of Aaron Pryor? That's the guy who took the steroids in the drink against Arguelloe, right?? This is two of the greats, at SRL's weight division, with Duran giving the performance of his life. What a Fight! Thanks for posting
This fight was a lot closer than most people want to admit. Just from reading or hearing other people talk about this fight you would have thought Duran destroyed him. It looks to me like Leonard stood his own ground pretty well. Duran deserved to win but it was a very close fight.
@TA152H01 The punch to SRL's head at 2:26 SRL stagger big time, again Padilla made sure SRL recup before break them. Duran did not have the chance to finish SRL. I bet this was pre-arrenge SRL's stile always having a big edge over his opponent before entering the ring. Not even having the ref. and applying nasty tastic was able win over a smaller opponent. LOL Read, all the highest rating comments and 50,000 at the arena have Duran winning.YOU ARE IN DENIAL SRL LOST both at 100% Duran is Better
@mittaku Duran was a 147 pounder by the time he had fought Leonard. He couldn't fight at 135 anymore. He had been fighting over 140 for three years before he fought Leonard.
Leonard had a very strong chin before he retired, and even Duran couldn't seriously hurt him. Leonard couldn't hurt Duran either though, except for a body shot in the second fight that took the life out of Duran.
But, Leonard's shots wore Duran down, and he expired late in the fight. The reverse didn't happen.
@TA152H01 Duran did not seriously hurt SRL, LOLOL hey man you are in Denial lol, so why SRL was holding for more than 13 sec. to survive twice on the 2nd round, once on the 4th and once on the 7th? Duran did not k.O SRL because the ref. was all the way in SRL's side. PLEASE Duran was the best in the business to finish any one in trouble. SRL was not hurt he was just dancing with out control 4 times at least. Why did he go plan B? Why was he holding and hanging all night? LOL you are a joke!
@rickyp4ever He was fighting Plan A the whole fight - slug with Duran and wear him out. He didn't hurt Leonard at all in rounds 4 and 7, although I gave him round 4. Round 2 he stunned Leonard, for sure, but, as you say, Duran was an excellent finisher and couldn't even knock Leonard down, and never got close to finishing him.
Duran actually got stunned a little by Leonard uppercuts in this video. Nothing serious, and it's amazing he only got a little stunned after taking those shots.
@TA152H01 I know, you only see what the commentators say. But here it is: on the 4th at 00:13 a combination to SRL's head sent him to the ropes and he held on D for 14sec. on the 7th at 3:27 a right hook to the head have SRL stunned, dancing without control, holding D for his life, again SRL allowed to hold D for 13 sec. You know shit, you think because SRL landed some good punches D have to be stunned? LOL, When? what tell you he was stunned? I don't see D staggering or try to hold SRL at all
@rickyp4ever Are you crazy? First, Duran can't throw a right hook, he throws a left hook. He's a right handed fighter? In both cases you mention, Leonard hit Duran with a good shot and Duran landed NOTHING. Did Leonard get hurt from whacking Duran with a left hook? Too funny. You know nothing about boxing. You can't even tell when a punch is landed.
At 7:37, Leonard lands two bombs, Duran gets limp after the first, and then staggers slightly from the second. Not serious though.
@TA152H01 Look on this same video at 3:28 SRL got hit with a right hook to the temple, SRL stagger, and his upper body was turning without control, SRL was allowed to hold Duran again 12 sec. AGAIN Padilla did not broke them appart. Now look at 3:14 when Padilla broke them appart, he got in btw both boxers got his arms in btw and pushed them appart, HOW WEIRD HE NEVER DID THIS WHEN SRL WAS HURT 4 TIMES AT LEAST. SRL LOST EVEN HAVING THE REF. BACKING HIM OFF. DURAN STAGGER IN YOUR CRAZY MIND LOL
@rickyp4ever You don't know boxing at all. The punch at 3:28 glanced off the side of his head, and did no damage.
You're absolutely clueless. You see Duran stagger for a moment from a second uppercut, and you don't recognize he was briefly stunned, but you say Leonard was stunned when a punch from Duran glanced off the side of his head.
For the record, Leonard said the punch in the 2nd round "rung his bell", but after that, nothing Duran threw hurt.
@TA152H01 Wow, you are so full of shit. Leonard said himself that in the first fight, it felt like he was getting hit with rocks every time Duran hit him. He said all the punches hurt because Roberto was hitting him so hard. What is your freakin angle? You just keep trolling these vids all day spewing garbage, get a freakin life.
@blite13 You're quite wrong, as usual. Leonard said he came into the fight in a daze, and was overwhelmed by the attention of the fight. He said that's why Duran's punch in the second round stunned him, and that none of the shots after that did. He did say Duran hit hard, but only the second round shot stunned him.
Do a search on SI's article on the fight, if you can actually read.
@TA152H01 did no damage, thats why Ray hung on for his life. It's why Rays legs went to noodles, cause he wasn't hurt, right? You need the same shot to your temple, it might knock some sense into ya.
@blite13 Duran stunned him in the second round, that's it. And not very much, since he couldn't do anything after it.
How about Duran after getting nailed big time by the uppercuts? Why did he back up awkwardly to his side if he wasn't stunned? Not that I blame him, he got nailed very hard, and was only very briefly stunned. But, he got rocked throughout the fight by very clean shots.
@TA152H01 You must be calling Leonard a liar. Leonard on film said, Duran hurt him every round. He said he was such a demon and every time he hit him, it felt like someone hitting him with rocks. It's on YT, do you want me to find it for you?
@blite13 You're misunderstanding what he was saying, obviously. After the fight, Duran said Leonard was the best fighter he ever fought, and Leonard said Duran hit hard, etc...
Leonard also said the only time he was stunned was in the second round. He said it wasn't until the 5th round until he was completely clear, but that Duran never stunned him again.
Obviously, Leonard wasn't too afraid of Duran's punching power, considering he traded with him the whole fight.
@TA152H01 Duran can't throw a R hook? What is that he digs into the left side of his opponent? Then, as Mike Tyson used to love, Duran would come back with a R uppercut. R hook to the kidney/rib area, then followed with a wicked R uppercut. It's a Duran trademark. Sit down you clown.
@TA152H01 I had read so many comments here and you are the only one CRAZY enough to say that Duran stagger. Do you know what stager means? Stagger is when you receive a punch and you have no control of your legs. (not a mis-step, that happen 40 times in a fight) on the 4th combination to SRL head sent him to the ropes AGAIN allowed to hold 12 sec. No warning from Padilla. WEIRD a veteran REF. slaping boxers glove when the other is hurt is not a good way to brake boxers appart.
Repeating Clancy's commentary towards the end, Duran didn't just overpower Leonard in a 'brawl,' he also outsmarted him: Leonard mistook Duran's style to be simply one of pushing forward, but that's an oversimplification. Consistently, Duran dazzled Leonard with lateral movement, slipping, turning Leonard and delivering short powerful punches on the inside, ducking out and capping with punches from the outside.
Durand pelea limpio, es duro, es macho, Leonard es mas alto, tiene más alcance, es rápido, técnico, golpea pero luego amarra; en conclusión Durand es mejor boxeador.

I think Leonard must've held a personal record for most misses in a fight at a time when Leonard was suppose to make the other boxers miss him.

If RD was a nat 160 and Heagler a nat 135...imaging the outcome of that fight, RD would have killed Heagler, RD was fighting much bigger boxers and legents,

bertelliish 9 months ago
@bertelliish He also gave Duran a beating this fight. He lands four times for every time Duran lands, but judges LOVED Duran. Did you know the second fight was scored very, very close? Did he win a round? Was he even competitive in a round? Look at the scoring for his fight with Benitez.
Duran never recovered from the beatings he took in his fights with Leonard. He was never the same fighter again.

counterstriving 8 months ago in playlist Roberto Duran Leonard 1
@counterstriving He took a worst beating in this fight than he had before. He got hit with very hard body shots the entire fight, by a guy that was a pretty good puncher, with great stamina. He also took a decent amount of shots in the head. It wasn't one round, it was 15 rounds of constantly getting hit by a guy. The 14th he got hammered to the head, and the 15th you can see he's just submissive from the beating. This was an extremely active fight.
TA152H01 8 months ago
@TA152H01 I really don't see what you mean by "submissive." OK both guys took a lot of hard shots in this fight, but I don't think it's at the level where you can say so-and-so "wasn't the same fighter" afterward, etc. Anyway the punishment was about equal, more or less.
counterstriving 7 months ago
@counterstriving He submitted to Leonard's will, and gave up a round he should have been fighting very hard for. It was a close fight, Leonard was dominating the later rounds, and he was the champ. When you give up, you have submitted to the stronger man. He was lucky it didn't cost him the decision.
Leonard lands many more shots to Duran, it's not close to equal. Regardless, Leonard went on to be Hearns, Duran never was a top fighter after Leonard 1.
TA152H01 7 months ago
@TA152H01 - Quote..."He took a worst beating in this fight than he had before. He got hit with very hard body shots the entire fight..."
in his autobiography, Leonard himself says that he, quote - "didn't come close to hurting Duran". This is coming from a man who not only hated Duran, but who has a real problem admitting any kind of flaw. Duran never 'submitted' to Leonard's will in this fight, he had the mental edge from start to finish and he knew he won even before the final bell.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Hurt in boxing terms means to stun, or have another fighter in trouble. I never said he hurt Duran in that sense. He gave him a beating the entire fight, mostly with body shots, and Duran quit in the 15th round. Your last line is a mistake. His own corner screamed at him to fight more in the last round. Duran couldn't, he was beaten. No one gives up a last round in a very close fight, against a very popular champion. He had no choice. He submitted.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - I'm guessing you don't box, but just watch the videos. Hurt means hurt. I see plenty of times when Leonard was hurt, very few times when Duran was hurt, or stunned. Leonard didn't give Duran a beating, the fight was a brawl, which is exactly what Duran wanted to happen and exactly what Leonard and his corner trained NOT to happen. Duran suckered SRL into his type of fight with his pre-fight antics. This isn't my opinion, it's Sugar Ray Leonard's and Angelo Dundee's.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Actually, you're wrong in your first assumption, and you're dead wrong with your last.
When you say a fighter hurt another fighter, you mean stunned, or did something extraordinary beyond landing punches solidly.
This definitely wasn't the style Leonard should have fought, but he did, and he did it well. To the point Duran lost the last three round he was so beaten up. Did the ref do that?
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - Actually, I do box. How about you?
You're trying to redefine 'hurt' so that your original statement isn't wrong, but it is wrong as per by Leonard himself saying he never 'hurt' Duran in this fight. Clearly you don't understand the term, or you are claiming Leonard doesn't understand the term. Hurt doesn't mean stunned. I've been hurt plenty of times and I've been stunned, they're different things. If you've ever been in a boxing match you would know that. But you haven't, have you.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Didn't you understand my first statement?
I always thought Germans were smart, you're changing my assessment.
I never said Leonard hurt him. They aren't different things. Maybe you don't understand English as well as you think. When someone is stunned, it's said they are hurt. You can be hurt other ways, like a hard body shot, but generally, it means stunned or something like it.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "you're changing my assessment."
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg I meant that Germans were smart, you dumb ass. Duh. Don't speak English well? Understand the word "context"?
You're wrong again. Duran didn't slow down Round 14, he was quite active in it. He just lost it.
Round 15, of a very close fight, against a popular and great champion, with your corner screaming at you to throw punches, and you don't? You just give it away? You don't even make an effort?
Are you really THAT stupid?
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - " I meant that Germans were smart, you dumb ass."
I told you, I'm not German, I'm Canadian. You're rambling now.
"You just give it away? " If you call winning a unanimous decision just giving it away. LOL
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're dumb, so you're probably not German. You're so dumb, you didn't realize I wrote that before you said you were Canadian? You're a retard or something.
To prove it, you think Duran knew the scorecards? How stupid are you? You never know with fights like that, especially against a champ. Scoring could go either way, and even the announcers thought Leonard won. You'd give away a round in such an important fight? Are you THAT stupid?
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - You would realize (if you weren't so young) that resorting so quickly to "stupid, dumb, retard, bla bla" comments is only revealing your own insecurity on this topic. Your embarrassment would go away quicker if you just admit you are wrong and learn from your mistake.
No Duran didn't know the scorecards, but he certainly felt he won. As I quoted from Dundee's biography "My View from the Corner", Duran was "sure of imminent victory". I guess you think Dundee is a retard. Right? :)
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg And you'd realize that you're a hypocrite because you're quick to throw insults, but, really, you're very stupid.
How could Dundee know this more than anyone else in the ring. He had a connection with Duran's mind? He couldn't know, no one but Duran could. His corner certainly didn't. The announcers felt he needed to win. All the people commented after the fight that he lost the last rounds, and many felt Leonard won.
Reality, Duran couldn't know the scoring.

Well that is surprising, because you certainly act like a kid. So you must be a very immature man. But why don't you come right out and say whether or not you have ever boxed? What avoid that? Have you boxed? You say your reflexes were so good - in what combat sport?
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Why do you spam your own posts.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - LOL, ok. I see you're getting pretty upset. You can't seem to answer anything without saying things like retard, or dumbass or slow-witted. It's been a long time since I was in grade school so I think we're done here. If you could actually make an argument you wouldn't have to rely on that. But it's obvious that you can't, because you haven't. There's a plus side though, maybe this little schooling will encourage you to get back to the gym. I hope so. Good luck with that.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@TA152H01 some pros drop their hands to lure a fighter forward so they can counter punch or capitalize on their mistakes. people tend not to do it as much in the am's because every tough/jab counts as pts. In the pros..its all about damage.

@TA152H01 - "All the people commented after the fight that he lost the last rounds, and many felt Leonard won."
He did lose the last rounds. But it wasn't because he was beaten up or intimidated or hurt or stunned.

You don't think a boxer has a feeling as to where he's at in a fight? Sure he could have been wrong. Turns out he wasn't.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago

KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Make up your mind, dumb ass. Did he make an effort to win the round, or did he think he was so far ahead he didn't need to win it.
You're a retard. You said he didn't make an effort because he had it won. Now you're confusing yourself? What a complete idiot.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "Make up your mind, dumb ass. Did he make an effort to win the round, or did he think he was so far ahead he didn't need to win it."
I'm quoting Dundee. You know, that guy that is contradicting you, along with Sugar Ray himself.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Again, what are you trying to say? You're confusing yourself? Are you feebleminded?
He either was gassed and couldn't win the round, or gave it up. You're saying both things, and don't realize it? You're one dumb puppy.
It's obvious he couldn't win it. It's no shame after that type of fight, but saying he gave it up willingly is borderline insane.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "Are you feebleminded?" LOL more projecting.
"It's obvious he couldn't win it." but he did win. He felt he had done enough to win it and he was right. Actually, his strategy was probably the only way he could have won against SR. He lured him into the classic Duran brawl, a place SR should never have gone. He basically brought him down to his level where he thrives. He knocked the hell out of him and won in the end. Not a pretty strategy, but it worked. It could only work once.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Dude, you're really stupid. You don't understand context?
I was talking about the last round!!!! He couldn't win it, he was too tired. Everything in that remark indicates I'm talking about the last round. Why can't you understand anything? Are you reading impaired?
You're too stupid to be interesting to me. You don't even understand English well. It's frustrating dealing with idiots like you.

@TA152H01 "You don't even understand English well."
Grammar alert. LOL
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "at 9:37 Leonard is hurt , at 9:42 he is stunned." <--further to this.
Why is Leonard's left hand down after 9:42? Why did he let Duran walk in and tag him with the right? Anyone who has boxed knows exactly why, because we've all been there. His hand is down because he CAN'T raise it after Duran's body shot. It's not that he forgets to raise it, he physically can't until his muscles unseize. His jab is useless until the end of the round. This happens a lot to SRL during this fight.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You are completely clueless. Leonard kept his left down before that. Boxers, which you CLEARLY are not, block with the shoulder, which Leonard does extremely well. He can't lift his arm, but he can throw hard body shots? Are you completely clueless?
He wasn't stunned at all during that round, and he hit Duran with the cleaner shots. Duran's shots late in the round were not hard.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01-"He can't lift his arm, but he can throw hard body shots?"
So even when I point out a specific second in the video you still can see when someone is hurt AND unable to throw for the rest of the round? Actually, I knew you wouldn't be able to see it, or if you did, admit it. Perhaps you're young and feel if you just keep bullshitting then people will come around to your inane assessment of this fight. You know, the one where you disagree with both Angelo Dundee AND Sugar Ray Leonard.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're not smart enough, or wise enough, to realize you don't know much. You assume anyone disagreeing with you, isn't seeing it right, because you're infallible.
Actually, you don't know much of anything. He wasn't keeping his arm down because he couldn't bring it up, he threw a hard left hook shortly after. You didn't notice it? One blocks the left side of his face with a shoulder, especially when someone is going to the body, or you want to come up. Learn something.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "You assume anyone disagreeing with you, isn't seeing it right, because you're infallible."
You're not just disagreeing with me, you're disagreeing with Sugar Ray Leonard and Angelo Dundee.
About the "hard left". So you didn't see the wince? No, I didn't think you'd notice that either. A boxer would see those things easily. But then, you aren't one and seem to have trouble admitting it. I'll give you another chance.
Have you ever boxed?
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg I don't see Leonard saying anything you are. I see you making crap up, and then misunderstanding like you're an idiot.
Leonard thought he won the fight. I was alive then. I didn't like Leonard, but after seeing the fight, felt he got robbed and gained respect for him. Many thought he got robbed.
Look it up in Sports Illustrated. You can still see the old articles, if you're smart enough to know how to do a search. So get someone to help you.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H0 -"don't see Leonard saying anything you are."
I'll give you the book and the page number of any quote I provide. You can look it up in your own boxing library.Wait. You don't actually have one of those do you? A collection of books by, and about, the great fighters.
It's ok to think he got robbed. Nothing wrong with that. But it's not ok to make things up, which is what you are doing. I didn't like Leonard OR Duran. But I wouldn't lie about them if I didn't have anything real to say.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg The point is, your quotes don't say anything regarding the argument. You quote Leonard saying how he felt after the fight. I never said he didn't get hit at all. I said Duran took a beating.
Leonard actually said Duran didn't hurt him after the first couple of rounds. He said he went into the fight in a daze of sorts, and the punch that hurt/stunned him in the 2nd round didn't have any effect later on. Do a search on SI, maybe you'll learn something.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "Do a search on SI, maybe you'll learn something."
I quote the main players and you send me to SI.
LOL, let me guess, you have a stack of swimsuit issues where your parents can't find them?
This is getting tedious.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "No one gives up a last round in a very close fight, against a very popular champion. He had no choice. He submitted."
Duran didn't give up, he was gassed from the 14 previous rounds of brawling with a champion of Leonard's quality. He had no choice but to keep up the pressure all fight because if he hadn't SRL would of realized the mistake he was making. Things is, SR was gassed too and had no power in his punches in the last rounds. Again, that's SRL talking, not me.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg He took such a beating, of course he was tired. That's my point! Duh.
Leonard landed HARD body shots towards the end of the round. He had power in the last three rounds, or the ref was hitting Duran's head and making sweat fly off it.
Obviously, you're not a boxer, but the way you can tell is the other guy's head. If someone's head moves a lot, and sweat flies, it's a good shot. He landed some, especially in the 13th and 14th. Only late in the 15th did he.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "He took such a beating, of course he was tired. That's my point! Duh."
He didn't take a beating. They only reason you want to say that is that you are trying to appear like you know something about the subject, when clearly you don't. You should realize that this is obvious to anyone who has actually boxed. If you don't have the experience to see that he was never 'hurt' in the video you should take the word of Leonard himself.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You don't know boxing, why are you presenting yourself like you do?
If you box a hard, grueling fight, you wear out over time. Body shots don't have to hurt an opponent to wear him out. In fact, you don't often see a big body shot knock a guy down, or have a huge effect, although sometimes it happens. It wears a guy down.
Duran got POUNDED every round, and he wore out.
You're clueless. Are you eight and fantasize about boxing?
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01- "Duran got POUNDED every round, and he wore out."
You're sticking with your original story because you're not man enough to just admit that you are wrong according to the people close to that fight. In fact you have it exactly backwards, it was SRL who was "pounded" every round. He told George Kimball for his book Four Kings - "I was mentally and physically exhausted. I'd never taken such a physical beating. The doctor had to come up to my room later to drain blood from my ears".
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're a very illogical person, and not very bright.
I didn't say Leonard didn't ever get hit. I said Duran DID get pounded every round. A dumb person would think they are mutually exclusive.
Leonard fought every minute of every round. Of course he was exhausted. Duran hit hard too. On the other hand, Duran was done by the 14th. Done! He couldn't even fight the 15th. He gave it up.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - Just to clarify. "Stunned" is a punch that effects you mentally. It's when your brain gets shaken up and you can't focus for a second (or longer). You don't even feel hurt, just confused. "Hurt" is purely physical, it's when you're clear headed but your body doesn't obey your brain, all you can do is freeze for a second (or longer). For example, at 9:37 Leonard is hurt to the body, at 9:42 he is stunned.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg You're talking out your ass.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - I'm not German, I'm Canadian. My English is excellent. The reason you're harping on the word "stunned" and "hurt" is because you know that you have been proven wrong and you're just trying to wiggle and squirm your way out of it by redefining words so that your original assessment of this fight doesn't look so silly. Meanwhile everyone who has actually been in a boxing ring is having a laugh at your expense. BTW - you dodged the question. You've never boxed have you.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg It's not actually, because you haven't boxed, and you still don't realize I did answer your question.
I'm not redefining words, I just know what they mean. By your brain-dead definition, stunned would pertain only to the head, and hurt would pertain only to the body. It's not so.
Listen to announcers. When they say he got hurt with that punch, they are saying he's stunned or dazed when it's to the head. Why don't you know this? It's not even arguable.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01-"Don't try to teach me English, and I won't teach you German."
What I don't understand is why don't you let someone teach you boxing? If you're actually interested in the subject why not go down to your local club and learn something? That way you won't have to pretend on the internet, which makes you a sort of loser dontcha think? I can tell by the way you talk about fights that you don't even have a basic grasp of what boxing is. You speak like you're still in high school. Are you?
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Dude, the only reason you watch boxing is to watch men next to each other.
I've forgotten more than you'll ever know. You're a typical blowhard that thinks his opinion is the only one that matters, and tries to be patronizing to gain an upper hand. It doesn't work with me. I see you're a dolt.
Your insights are all wrong. You don't understand boxing at all. You don't even know why Leonard didn't bring up his left (I wouldn't have either he did the right thing).
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "Your insights are all wrong. You don't understand boxing at all. "
Projecting your own faults onto someone else will not solve your problem. All you need to do is actually train in boxing. Then you'll know what "hurt" is and what "stunned" is. I've explained why you were wrong. I've backed it up with quotes from SRL and Dundee. I've pointed out video to illustrate. All you've been able to do is plug your ears and repeat the same falsehoods over and over. You're failing.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg Your quotes have nothing to do with the questions. You're completely illogical.
You don't know that when a guy gets stunned they refer to him as getting hurt? Are you a complete dunce? Have you ever seen boxing gloves in person? By your own, idiotic, definition, only a body shot could be said to hurt. It's not so. You're so ignorant.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 "Your quotes have nothing to do with the questions. You're completely illogical."
You think quoting SUGAR RAY (the fighter) and ANGELO DUNDEE (his corner) as they are talking about this very fight you can't seem to understand - has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTIONS. Well, that says it all right there doesn't it. You're determined to remain wrong indefinitely rather than man up and admit you're wrong. Ya know, the pain of embarrassment is temporary, but being a coward is for life.
KarlHeinzofWpg 5 months ago
@KarlHeinzofWpg I can come up with quotes that have nothing to do with anything.
Your brain is unfocused. You can't think logically. When someone says Duran took a beating, you make the logical fallacy that if Leonard said Duran hit hard, Duran didn't take a beating. It's stupid, but that's what you're doing.
Duran got pounded the whole fight. It's that simple. Leonard took shots too. No one said otherwise.
TA152H01 5 months ago
@TA152H01 - "Your brain is unfocused. You can't think logically."
Nope. I'm pretty focused. However I can see that you're getting quite frustrated with your replies. That will happen when you don't have anything on your side to back up your arguments, which were few and pitiful.
Luckily there is no need for me to make a career out of educating you, especially when you seem immune to it. All I can do is give you some advice, try to actually box for a while before you attempt to analyze fights.

Duran really got stunned by those right uppercuts Leonard bombed him with. Nothing serious, but his legs were wobbly for a few seconds. Some of it is he's tired though. Probably in the first round, he'd have absorbed the bombs without buckling a little.
TA152H01 2 years ago
it also got better for duran as he moved on further into his looong career, and gained more popularity n fans than any latin fighter,..ever. he's loved,..actually loved, the world over,..like Ali is.

72768487912002 2 years ago
Just the more i hear these commentators,..the m ore i get nauseated,..they actually cry out for leonard , as in hurting duran or nailing him with this n that,..even the phantom 'bolo' punch that ray clearly missed,..yet ferdie goes "riiiiiight on the button!",..typical of media bias towards the american fighters that still exists today, tho alil less, especially in manny's case,.he get alot of good press here in america. Only the good announcers gave credence to roberto in announcing his fights.
northpoint43m 2 years ago
me personally , i didnt like leonard cuz of both the media hype and his way of manipulation of the sport, let alone style, just not my kind of style i preferred to watch. ray was tough as they come tho, no doubt. talk about money?..nobody made more than ray during the eighties,..by far. I wouldnt mention delahoya in either sentence of duran or leonard.
northpoint43m 2 years ago
yea well ur dislike for duran shows,..cuz the truth the third fight didnt happen for 8 yrs was ray was bitter about duran tainting his victory in new orleans my friend, wasnt about monwy at all. He also feared the press would ruin it,.as wellas his fear of duran goin into super-training mode for the rematch to win back his good name. ray felt duran had evenn more incentive to come in in top shape, and he feared that. wouldda been a helluva fight..
northpoint43m 2 years ago
Can't beleive yu gys are sooo pro leonard in this fight. Duran 'controlled' the fight, the tempo, forcing leonard all over the ring, punishing him mercilessly on the ropes, right hand counters to his face, hurting him numerous times. not once did Duran actually seem shaken, yet ray fought his ass off, making this one of the best fights ever. i give leonard his due simply cuz he proved his mettle, not just as another 'pretty boy', but this was Duran's moment in time, to show it all to the world.
northpoint43m 2 years ago
I agree Duran was an animal on this night and there is no way Leonard would have ever beat him when he was in shape.Chicken Lenoard even admitted he knew Duran partied between fights and thats why he forced the immidiate rematch.Something chicken Leonard would not give Duran another firght for 9 more years.
72768487912002 2 years ago
something about Duran quitting in the 2cnd fight put off promoters and the fans from spending money on a third right away. But after Duran beat Davey moore and then gave Hagler a good fight the third SRL Duran fight could make money. Fight game was by then was ALL about what fight could sell. It's all about the money.
tellthetruthg 2 years ago
Also, Duran was exposed the second fight. He knew he had no chance against Leonard, and Leonard knew how easy it was to beat him by moving. The scary thing is, why didn't he know that the first fight? De Jesus moved a lot when he raped Duran, and the lead-legged Panamanian got totally outclassed by a guy that wasn't close to Leonard's talent.
Even so, I'm watching these rounds and Duran's head moving back, and wonder what the judges saw. Of course, they had the second fight close too.
TA152H01 1 year ago
One of the talents Duran had was he played mind games well too. In the first fight because Duran baited SRL so well SRL went in bent on out slugging Duran and proving he was just as a bad ass Duran was . 2cnd fight SRL fights in his style and Duran can't hang period. Had he fought that way the 1rst fight we might have got to see SRL knock Duran out, because no way in hell does Duran quit like that in the debut bout

Sugar "Gay" ...the biggest fraud in boxing -next to Oscar De La "Hoto"!!!

tellthetruthg 2 years ago
You can see throughout the fight that both fighters try to play head games and gain dominance. Leonard with his clowning and pushing the ref away, and Duran with his incessant pushing and brawling. Duran falls for none of Leonard's nonsense, but at the same time, he's confused by the fact Leonard whacks him every time he thinks he's finally got him.
It's not until the 14th round one fighter dominates. Duran has no choice, but he tries to use bravado as he gets dominated.

TA152H01 2 years ago
TA152H01 ; you are so right. Duran was great but SR was better. You know styles make fights and SR gave Duran his chance in the 1rst one but when SR fought to his strength Duran couldn't compete. SR beat the 2 best of that era Duran and Hearns. Hearns put Duran to sleep. SR beat them both and took their best shots. SR is King of the hill of that group.
tellthetruthg 2 years ago
Yes, without a doubt. Leonard had so many tools, he could fight anyone, in any style. I've never before, or since, seen a fighter that did so many things well. We saw what happened. In the first fight, they fought Duran's style, and many still had Leonard winning (myself included). In the second, Leonard made him look absurd. Hearns raped him, the same guy Leonard beat.
Duran was a very good fighter, but he wasn't on the same level as Leonard. Would Leonard have quit like a dog?
TA152H01 2 years ago
Almost every legitimate boxing expert ranks Duran as a greater fighter than Leonard.
CyrusTab 2 years ago
I agree about the difference between the
1st and 2nd fights, Duran dominated the first, & SRL def outclassed Duran in the
2nd, but if you are talking about best in the 80's, I would have to say Hagler hands down. SRL may have won the fight between them in '87, but I think (and so do many others for that matter) that Hagler won, and there was some suspect judging involved, even though SRL used last minute bursts to "steal rounds", as I've heard Teddy Atlas quote.

FlaviusConstantius 2 years ago
dominated his division? look at the division once again. 140? not even 1 of the original 8? and yes your right Leonard's career was very well manipulated & choreographed.

Thanks for posting
peterlally 2 years ago
This fight was a lot closer than most people want to admit. Just from reading or hearing other people talk about this fight you would have thought Duran destroyed him. It looks to me like Leonard stood his own ground pretty well. Duran deserved to win but it was a very close fight.

@81bulldog Round 6 was Leonard's easily. In forums that people debate this fight on, no one discusses round 6 because it's so obviously for Leonard.
In other words, you don't have the slightest idea on how to score fights.

LOL Read, all the highest rating comments and 50,000 at the arena have Duran winning.YOU ARE IN DENIAL SRL LOST both at 100% Duran is Better
rickyp4ever 1 year ago
@TA152H01 if SRL was the nat. 135 and Duran 147 not even Padilla aplying CPR to SRL he would of survive LOL
mittaku 1 year ago
@mittaku Duran was a 147 pounder by the time he had fought Leonard. He couldn't fight at 135 anymore. He had been fighting over 140 for three years before he fought Leonard.
Leonard had a very strong chin before he retired, and even Duran couldn't seriously hurt him. Leonard couldn't hurt Duran either though, except for a body shot in the second fight that took the life out of Duran.
But, Leonard's shots wore Duran down, and he expired late in the fight. The reverse didn't happen.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 Duran did not seriously hurt SRL, LOLOL hey man you are in Denial lol, so why SRL was holding for more than 13 sec. to survive twice on the 2nd round, once on the 4th and once on the 7th? Duran did not k.O SRL because the ref. was all the way in SRL's side. PLEASE Duran was the best in the business to finish any one in trouble. SRL was not hurt he was just dancing with out control 4 times at least. Why did he go plan B? Why was he holding and hanging all night? LOL you are a joke!
rickyp4ever 1 year ago
@rickyp4ever He was fighting Plan A the whole fight - slug with Duran and wear him out. He didn't hurt Leonard at all in rounds 4 and 7, although I gave him round 4. Round 2 he stunned Leonard, for sure, but, as you say, Duran was an excellent finisher and couldn't even knock Leonard down, and never got close to finishing him.
Duran actually got stunned a little by Leonard uppercuts in this video. Nothing serious, and it's amazing he only got a little stunned after taking those shots.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 I know, you only see what the commentators say. But here it is: on the 4th at 00:13 a combination to SRL's head sent him to the ropes and he held on D for 14sec. on the 7th at 3:27 a right hook to the head have SRL stunned, dancing without control, holding D for his life, again SRL allowed to hold D for 13 sec. You know shit, you think because SRL landed some good punches D have to be stunned? LOL, When? what tell you he was stunned? I don't see D staggering or try to hold SRL at all
rickyp4ever 1 year ago
@rickyp4ever Are you crazy? First, Duran can't throw a right hook, he throws a left hook. He's a right handed fighter? In both cases you mention, Leonard hit Duran with a good shot and Duran landed NOTHING. Did Leonard get hurt from whacking Duran with a left hook? Too funny. You know nothing about boxing. You can't even tell when a punch is landed.
At 7:37, Leonard lands two bombs, Duran gets limp after the first, and then staggers slightly from the second. Not serious though.
TA152H01 1 year ago
DURAN STAGGER IN YOUR CRAZY MIND LOL
rickyp4ever 1 year ago
@rickyp4ever You don't know boxing at all. The punch at 3:28 glanced off the side of his head, and did no damage.
You're absolutely clueless. You see Duran stagger for a moment from a second uppercut, and you don't recognize he was briefly stunned, but you say Leonard was stunned when a punch from Duran glanced off the side of his head.
For the record, Leonard said the punch in the 2nd round "rung his bell", but after that, nothing Duran threw hurt.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 Wow, you are so full of shit. Leonard said himself that in the first fight, it felt like he was getting hit with rocks every time Duran hit him. He said all the punches hurt because Roberto was hitting him so hard. What is your freakin angle? You just keep trolling these vids all day spewing garbage, get a freakin life.
blite13 1 year ago
@blite13 You're quite wrong, as usual. Leonard said he came into the fight in a daze, and was overwhelmed by the attention of the fight. He said that's why Duran's punch in the second round stunned him, and that none of the shots after that did. He did say Duran hit hard, but only the second round shot stunned him.
Do a search on SI's article on the fight, if you can actually read.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 did no damage, thats why Ray hung on for his life. It's why Rays legs went to noodles, cause he wasn't hurt, right? You need the same shot to your temple, it might knock some sense into ya.
blite13 1 year ago
@blite13 Duran stunned him in the second round, that's it. And not very much, since he couldn't do anything after it.
How about Duran after getting nailed big time by the uppercuts? Why did he back up awkwardly to his side if he wasn't stunned? Not that I blame him, he got nailed very hard, and was only very briefly stunned. But, he got rocked throughout the fight by very clean shots.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 You must be calling Leonard a liar. Leonard on film said, Duran hurt him every round. He said he was such a demon and every time he hit him, it felt like someone hitting him with rocks. It's on YT, do you want me to find it for you?
blite13 1 year ago
@blite13 You're misunderstanding what he was saying, obviously. After the fight, Duran said Leonard was the best fighter he ever fought, and Leonard said Duran hit hard, etc...
Leonard also said the only time he was stunned was in the second round. He said it wasn't until the 5th round until he was completely clear, but that Duran never stunned him again.
Obviously, Leonard wasn't too afraid of Duran's punching power, considering he traded with him the whole fight.
TA152H01 1 year ago
@TA152H01 Duran can't throw a R hook? What is that he digs into the left side of his opponent? Then, as Mike Tyson used to love, Duran would come back with a R uppercut. R hook to the kidney/rib area, then followed with a wicked R uppercut. It's a Duran trademark. Sit down you clown.
blite13 1 year ago
@TA152H01 I had read so many comments here and you are the only one CRAZY enough to say that Duran stagger. Do you know what stager means? Stagger is when you receive a punch and you have no control of your legs. (not a mis-step, that happen 40 times in a fight) on the 4th combination to SRL head sent him to the ropes AGAIN allowed to hold 12 sec. No warning from Padilla. WEIRD a veteran REF. slaping boxers glove when the other is hurt is not a good way to brake boxers appart.

Watching all the Duran videos here, am compelled to agree.
Who was that Australian guy he knocked out? Same guy that killed two other men in the ring, right?
willsclassic 2 years ago
Repeating Clancy's commentary towards the end, Duran didn't just overpower Leonard in a 'brawl,' he also outsmarted him: Leonard mistook Duran's style to be simply one of pushing forward, but that's an oversimplification. Consistently, Duran dazzled Leonard with lateral movement, slipping, turning Leonard and delivering short powerful punches on the inside, ducking out and capping with punches from the outside.
