i have always thought that americans where arrogant and gung ho i was so glad to see these guys are not like that.........i think i put it down to kendo :)
Another thing is to always white balance no matter where your at.....and when you use a clip....and there is alot of movement from you trying to get the tripod to a better spot...Id say make the first cut after that...and then when you find a spot where the Kendoka's are at a normal stance, start from there and keep going. All in all this isnt a bad video, but there are somethings that could be added to it to make it look more professional and still hit your target audience.
From one to another who did video and audio in high school, I would lower the audio while the guy is talking and then after slowly bring it back up. A Lapel mic wouldve been pretty good to get the sensei's history lesson. I think some transitions wouldve made this abit more. Too much head room on Tom sensei, You cut off Jeff's Head, It wouldve been better if you put Jeff of the the Right instead of the center and left..
@KagaKiyomitsu thank you for the tips. I agree a Lapel mic would have been good, but I have no access to one, so that was something I had to go without. also, as for the camera movements, I was not working the camera, my friend was, and I noticed that Marsten Sensei's head was being cut off, so I told Liam to move it up (I would have a redo of that shot, but sensei was very tired from 3 hours of Kendo). the rest of the shaky footage was not footage I shot, but still had to use.
@Admin5studios no problem. I understand not being able to get a lapel mic...and having to use someone elses b roll is a pain when its all shaky BUT this wasnt bad.
@sid25s well, this sensei has been studying Kendo for longer than you've been alive (the wording of ur comment tells me ur under the age of 31), and he's studied under countless Japanese Sensei.
Plus, i don't know who told U those meanings of "Shi" and "Nai", but bamboo is "Take," and Katana is "Katana," otherwise, sword=Ken, and knife="To." Evidenced by several words involving death that have the syllable "Shi," and the common knowledge that one ofthe main Japanese words for "No" is "Nai."
@Admin5studios I think this is a linguistic point rather than a kendo point. "Shi" CAN mean "death" and "nai" CAN mean a negation or "it isn't" but they use different characters: "shi" as in death is written 死 and "nai" as in a negation doesn't have a kanji and is written in hiragana ない. "Shinai" in the kendo context is written 竹刀, 竹 meaning "bamboo" (this can also be pronounced as "take," "shitsu" or "chiku") and 刀 meaning "sword" (this can also be pronounced "tou," "to," "katana" or "fune").
@Nurelius thats all very interesting, but it doesn't mean anyone's wrong here. u just said it CAN mean that, and in this case, it does. and like I said, sensei knows what it means, im just repeating it.
@Admin5studios I did want to point out that I was not saying anyone was wrong but I ran out of characters. I just wanted to clarify that while the separate pronunciations "shi" and "nai" can mean what Bolling Sensei said (and thus, he's right), this is not the case when the two are combined in the word "shinai" written as 竹刀. Perhaps he was using this explanation either as a way of remembering the word or as a metaphor.
@Nurelius Thank you for your mention. It is important that you pointed it out since the sensei didn't clarify. I as a Japanese would never say in that way because "shinai" is "竹刀." To say "not to die" in Japanese is "shinanai/死なない," never be "shinai/死ない (this word just doesn't make sense)." The sensei's idea is interesting though.
BKC... Im going to join next quarter and hope to have a good time :D
