I've read somewhere about Magpie being interpreted in words of unexpected child and a marriage reluctance afterwards. But I strongly feel that it is all about standing at the crossroads of dramatic young boy decision to make - whether to go society-safe-and-faked or to choose the unknown narrow upstream backroad but to run it wide and open. Fake-straight or true-gay. Marianne Faithfull's voice seems to be of unknown or mixed gender and therefore Patrick can make a decision on his OWN.
I think I've become addicted to Patrick Wolf now. I am a Marianne Faithfull fan and when I heard this I played it over and over.....Wow what an amazing artist. In my opinion this man is a genius! Marianne's vocals are like ummm...intense foreplay. Their voices melt together. Gotta love this guy. ;-) Eric.
They always say The Magic Position is Patrick's upbeat album. But this to me is the heart & soul of that album. He can't deny his melancholy side and it brings out the best in him.
Actually, this song is good after the first minute.
