So basically its a mechanical computer?

I suppose if you do study the races again and again you maybe able to work out the winning patten as its pseudo random ?

Different horses can be programmed (by moving air hoses around) so that when a given horse wins, the piano roll is automatically reversed and moves in the opposite direction. With this added feature, the outcome is impossible to predict, no matter how many races you watch. Especially if the owner moved the hoses periodically.
