The only guess I could come up with was "MAN," but then we see that there is no "N", and I couldn't think of anything else. I was on the right track, though, because a "guy" is a "man," but that word didn't come to me without seeing any letters in the puzzle.

I think the same thing happened on an episode I remember seeing in 1993 or 94. The category was "thing" and the puzzle was "JOY." I don't think there were any letters showing for the 10 seconds there either.

first, it's not that rare. if you watched it for even a month or so you will see this does happen on occasion. second they didn't use to give you the freebies of rstlne, and players commonly picked many of these letters including other frequent ones. and since the puzzle was only 3 letters, it's not terribly surprising that they didn't happen to guess a letter. it would be more rare if the puzzle was a bit longer like 2 or 3 words and they didn't get a letter either by free or by choice

Years back, during the bonus round, the contestants were asked to choose 5 letters and one vowel. More often than not, the contestants would choose R-S-T-L-N for consonants and E for the vowel.

After a while, they just decided to just give them the 6 letters and let them choose 3 more consonants and another vowel.
