@NotechRX7 My dad got a old Dell back in 1998 and it was working fine about 2 months ago in Nov its CPU Fan went out and killed it sad it died and I had it Maxed out
Convert it into a very robust custom built firewall/server for free. Open source software at pfsense.com. Not trying to spam everyone, but there are many usefull things to do with old computers.
I bet this is a SDram, before the ddr ram came out.. Ebay will get you a cheap very cheap upgrade ram... Im sure its fragmented which a defrag will speed up the HDD... It doesn't matter how much space is used up, only matters if its frag... New thermal paste on the cpu would help... So for an extra what 20 to 30 dollars off of ebay u get a pertty nice PC.. You can load any server os and have things run though it or use it as a gate way for your net :|...Linux
I have a computer very similar tothis one ,looks just like it but has winxp on it andit stillworks and I won't sell it for anything!! It just keeps running and running ,I had to take twist ties to the cooling fan as oneof the clamps broke ,then I went and bout a new fan for it and while I had it out put a pentium 4 chip in it ,Still keeps up pretty good with the one I just bought at Christmas!!
I remember those older hideous piles of crap. The worst one made was the XE783 (Walmart Xmas Bundle in 2000/2001). Celeron with 64MB of RAM running Windows ME. Lovely POS i810 chipset to go along with it. Horrible hardware combined with a horrible Operating System.
I have an (older) HP Pavilion 514x it still works, aside from a Hard Drive failure and the fact whenever you open it, you seem to unplug the CPU Fan. It still runs from a USB EHDD. Very useful as a Linux server.
Srry about the long post, what I'm left out is "even old computers, like my T23 laptop that doesn't even have a true graphics card (it has a pci "chip"), can be useful and valuable
I believe I have the same computer growing up. It was a fun computer except for the fact that McAfee's Guard Dog blocked 80% of the websites, even children's sites.
As of now, it sits in the garage. If I could, I'd run it and see how it's doing.
Hey Roadgeek, I have a Question. I have the same computer except it is a 6630. I know you don't have it anymore. But the Question is, Why don't mine make a beep when i start it up anymore? I have the BIOS Update.
If I sold a computer, I would at least wipe the HDD and reinstall the OS (at least Windows 2000). And if it had low ram I would bump it up to at least 256mb.
I also shop at Value Village and have bought 3 computers from them, all for under $10. Gotta love that place. Newest one I found there was a Dimension with a Pentium 4 @2.8ghz with a $4 price. Re-installed windows and runs like a champ.
You should talk to your local mom&pop PC shops, we throw stuff like that away all the time, nobody wants 'em. as for those that said use it as a server? i hope you get electric for free with your rent friends, as any use you can think of for those dinosaurs will not be worth the power they suck. you could drop in a plug PC and be using sub 10 watts, those things? not great on power usage, no low power states on those old CPUs.
To all the people saying that they wouldn't take this computer even for free, there are a million things you could do with it, especially turning it into a home server, very useful for storing things or keeping network drives for storage, or a print server to keep the printers up and running.
even if you had it as a printer server or network server, the electricity used will be wasteful. There are a lot better energy conservative server computers out there now.
I bought an old gateway at a place called the chicken barn it's an antique store...well i got it for 35 bucks with windows xp and a intel pentium 4 processor and everything worked!
I know a computer shop that just throws working computers away at the back of the store, so i always go there when it's closed and take the computers with me :) it are mostly pentium 4's but i even had a pentium D with ddr2 ram once (i gave it away), they throw other things to away like working cellphone's, pc componements, and once i had a working lcd screen^^ (only lasted 1 year, but still^^)
Well it's still got Napster installed so there hasn't been a wipe since at least sometime back in 2001.I'd say it's the same install of windows that was on there when she got it back in 1999 or so.
Wow, computers that go for $8.00, and people that don't know how to restore their hard drives. That thrift store is the typical computer hacker's dream.. lol
I have a computer similar to this a HP Pavillion 6370Z... It was crazy to replace the floppy drive on that thing! I hope that you have better luck replacing any drives in your pc than what I did in mine! I'll make a video of it one day to show you. That's a good little pc! Does it take PC 100 RAM? I'll have to look for a Value Village in my area now!
That thrift store writes the prices the same way the "Unique" stores around here do, so they're probably run by the same company. Windows ME is okay if you don't load it up with too much crap, but tends to bog down and run low on memory if you install too many applications, because its extra graphical effects take up more memory than the plainer appearance of Windows 98.
Cool Find! I wish my local thrift stores had PCs. I'm eyeing a hot wheels one on eBay from 1999. I have an old emachine that has a hard drive mounted kind of like that. This one looks like a good candidate for Windows 2000, or maybe 98 if you can find the drivers.
Nice find. It's not that often that you find a computer that new for $8. I bet if the goodwill I go to had a computer that old it would cost around $50.
@computerkid1416 i know of a goodwill that sold the land and building then went across the street and tore down a closed restraunt and built a brand new store. the prices from close to open literally doubled. i stay out of goodwills because it seems more like a buisness than than something out help people save. like really really high yardsale prices
@buggy715 I installed all the new OSes on a new 20GB hard drive. I saved the original so all I have to do is stick it back then. I'll try and do a video of that shortly.
I custom built my computer. Booyea-kasha.
