If you ever want to be or be worthy of being an actual musician, then your ears are the only road to musicianship. Everyone else is just a puppet, doing nothing more than exercising their "paint-by-number" skills. Anybody can learn guitar licks, few can inherently understand them.

SRV, Jimi, Clapton, and JM. and if you look at just what songs he plays you'd assume its more of a hendrix influence unless you listen to them. also, i'd say its a good influence, considering that mayer is an incredible rhythmic player and has a signature way of phrasing that is not easily copied

one way of doing it is by keeping the volume knob on the guitar on around 5-6. that way if you hit the strings hard ip plays loud, if you hit them low it plays softly, when clapton plays the solo in this song he turns it right up. anouther way to get that is by keeping your preamp level up and your amp level low, although i reccomend tho e other way.

Why do you need tabs? He's playing it right in front of you. You're not going to get a "feel" from tabs. Forget tabs. They're holding you back. Learn some scales beyond the minor pents and go to work. It's all inside you, brother!

@motokev i used tabs alot, but then I started to ear out this stuff. My instructor's instructor said that sheet music/tabs is a shortcut to learning it by ear. My playing has sky rocketed just from learning pilky's cover of gravity. If you're serious about guitar you'll make time. As you progress you'll get faster at earing it out.
