you have to really try hard to expose the glitches

VHS (video tapes) was the de facto substandard standard at the time of the PS2 launch. DVD was kinda starting to pick up in the states, but in the rest of the world (Japan especially), almost nobody had it and the PS2 was the single cheapest DVD player on the market and at the same time backwards compatible with the most popular game console at the time and it was the DVD player alone that allowed Sony to take Japan.

Most of the people who bought it in its first year weren't even gamers- they just thought "Oh! This thing plays DVDs at affordable prices!
