I remember seeing an ad for the 1st SNME in the TV Guide. I was 13 years old and I was a huge, huge wrestling fan since 1979. I really didn't know what to expect when I saw the ad but I was very excited about it. Before SNME, there were rarely major matches on TV, especially title defenses, and I didn't have cable which aired the MSG matches on MSG. This was a very exciting time. I think I still have the 1st SNME on VHS somewhere. Haven't watched it in more than 20 years.
Omg...'Obsession' is the theme song...i forgot that...Up here in canada it was the theme music for a show called 'Fashion Television'.....it was good song until then...it fit for wrestling cuz since i was 5,it was an obsession
It was so fucking great!!!! Great memories from my childhood. I still love this theme song 25 years later and of course the old matches. It was Hulkamania.
I was also at this event too, really high up in the seats. It has been such a LONG time since I've seen any footage from this. Christ, I was 12 or 13 then. What a blast it was! Of all my time at the Nassau Coliseum, this was the best show for me. I didn't even know this was the very first SNME that night, which I think was a Friday when they taped it. My grandmother, now deceased, really loved being at this show with me.
I was @ this event in the Nassau Coliseum. I still have the ticket stub. It came across a million times better on TV. I love the opening video with the song, its so perfect to define its "time". The best time of wrestling, the 80's. The 90's brought crap.
@NYPrimrose how the hell can u say the 90s brought crap to wrestling ... hell son ... didn't u watch the ROCK vs AUSTIN FEUD and the monday night rivalry ??? and the RAW IS WAR from 97-99 ???
@bigpat666 Actually, he's right. It was in the 90s that wrestling really stopped being the main focus. I still love the monday night wars, and even today's product. There are still great storylines. But there is not less wrestling then there was in the 80s, but things are starting to slowly get better again.
See here what sold WWF? A singer in one segment of the promo, an actor in the other! That's something the WWE now severely underplays. They could hypothetically be the American Bandstand of all entertainment by cultivating singers, actors... the whole bit! That's what makes Raw so good right now with celebs! What if SmackDown had Musician hosts in the same vein ala' Alice Cooper or Cyndi Lauper in the old days? Some crossover, sure but like Raw has pop celebs, this could be more character hosts.
Whose talking about Jesse Ventura's kid? j/k All I'm saying is it sold back then, sells now and the only thing assholes can do about it is hope for me to jump ship and watch TNA. Then maybe when I'm not looking one after another current young Superstar can have something tragic happen to them too.
Pfft, if you had a spine at all there'd be a rant following what you just said explaining in detail who you are like Duvall telling off punk greasers in Secondhand Lions. Go home, little boy and don't blame me for whatever is up your ass. I was there when Pee-Wee was still being dissed by Cheech and Chong *before* the Tequila dance. If it weren't for T and Stallone, Hogan would still be either a heel dying his hair red or having his belt taken away by Bockwinkle. Friends help each other out!
@Mysterwright I agree with you. However, back in '85, the WWF paired flashy pop celebrities with some solid wrestling. Today, RAW does a decent job (usually) with bringing in the celebs, but for the most part, the wrestling sucks.
Amen! Well, look @ it: They pin all their hopes on Orton. Who was Orton's dad, Cowboy Bob? A guy in a cast. That's it! Might as well pair Randy with IRS! No offense, Teddy. DiBiase should be Big Show's partner. What they need are babyfaces like Snuka, heels like Piper and upcoming friends in the wings like Hogan and Mr. Wonderful. I think the main reason McMahon hasn't done so is he still feels burned by all the talent flocking first to WCW and today TNA. Its made him bitter. Offer better deals!
Saturday Night's Main Event had debuted only a month after and a half after WrestleMania and this was long before we had a pay-per-view every month, which I believe has long since run its course.
@Mysterwright I think it would also be creative if she played a Betty Boop who mentored the WWE Divas. Did you know that many of the extreme antics the divas have done were also practiced in old pre-1935 Betty Boop cartoons? In one cartoon, I saw a grizzly old man strip Betty down to her bra and panties. I think it would be an interesting story. I can already picture the tagline for it: one of the first divas mentoring the current-day divas, with Cyndi Lauper as Betty Boop.
Haha, that'd be awesome! I can totally see that! Dig it, what if, when she were swinging her whistle pacing back and forth, with all the divas lined up like grunts in front of their bunks, Cyndi got called over to Mae Young and Moola whom told her the Divas' orders like The Godfather? Haha! Perhaps Slaughter could show up and be like "you want to *really get their attention? try this" before going vintage GI Joe drill instructor. Hehehe!
i will upload a highlights for this event soon
