'curvy', in his prime, Arthur Godfrey was as much an attraction and influence in broadcasting as Oprah Winfrey is these days...but after finishing his daily radio show in April 1972 (after 27 years), he really didn't have that much to do in broadcasting until his death over a decade later. VERY few people know who he is- and what he was.
What is it that makes Godfrey so hypnotic to watch? Is it that Wallace Beery-like voice? Or what? He's always fascinated me, since early childhood, and I'll comb through the kinescopes at the Paley Center for Media in New York looking for clips I haven't seen. (He and Beery were both doing some radio at the same time and I wonder if he ever interviewed Beery. Probably not, but if so, I'd love to hear that.)
Okay...I've been told the tapes don't exist, but if this is from Jan. 3, 57, then Patsy Cline's winning performance on "Talent Scouts" just two weeks later has to exist. I wish it would surface. We have the audio, but the kinescope would be great.
Being 57 I remember the Godfrey show, and I remember the McGuire Sister with much affection. I had that Children's Holiday album. Is it possible that you have more of the that broadcast? I loved that album. My sister and I played it to death.
Amazing. Thanks so much for posting this. I had almost given up trying to find the Capris (or Capri) Sisters. I was beginning to wonder if they were a studio group with 1 picture and a discography, but no names and no history behind them. This makes them real. I knew there had to be an Archie Bleyer/Arthur Godfrey connection. What a marvelous performance and production. Thank you.
Sorry, I am out on the road working on a music tour...don't get to check this often. I screen comments ONLY for content...I can't believe some of the rude and out-of-line comments some people try to post here...including off color, inappropriate comments. Thanks for your nice one.
I love this stuff and from the vantage point of the 21st century, it has a lot of charm. I still have to say, though, that I'm glad that I'm not living as a adult in the 1950s - for a whole lot of reasons.
The McGuires were and are three sharp cookies. They began as three small-town girls but as their career proceeded they diligently perfected their performances and pursued more and more sophisticated music. When they hit Las Vegas they were ready--glamorous, sophisticated and musically complex. Today still look fabulous and can say with pride they kept their high performing standards. As a famous singer told me, "I've never seen an act so thoroughly rehearsed and flawlessly presented."

Gee, was the world EVER that innocent? It seems like another world... (The "little" Arthur looks like a punk though).
