@RoyVanNistelrooij you have to take everything Rockwell says with a grain of salt, does the kit lens go to 2.8? No, that is what you are paying for with this lens, Your paying for depth of field, this lens gives u better background separation. and it is better in low light. There is a huge difference between f5.6 at the tele end of the kit lens vs the 2.8 of this lens. It is also much much better built.
Look at Ken rockwel's portfolio, its pretty awful, maybe 4 great pics.
@zamanakhan The difference is not really noticeable when you use both lens in daylight, sure I give points to the 2.8 for better low light performance, but lets be honest, if I were to shoot in low light I'd be using my fast primes, so the kitlens is a better zoom option for regular shooting, you get the best bang for the buck.
@RoyVanNistelrooij The only advantage of the kit lens is the low price, nothing else. 17-55/2.8 is better in build quality (it's durable and weather sealed), focus (lightning fast AF) and optics (even corners are sharp at 2.8!).
Thanks for comparing it w/ the 18-55 kit lens, especially the sharpness. I'm commiting suicide now! The 17-55 costs around 1300 Euros here in Germany. Damnid!
Kai! You should know better than to sit a lens down on it's rear element without a lens cap! Other than that, good review. Been waiting for you guys to do a review of this lens.
PLEASE CHECK OUT MY VIDEO I MADE ABOUT SKIN RETOUCHING UNDER 5 MIN! IM A FASHION AND BEAUTY PHOTOGRAPHER, SO GET TIPS FROM SOME ONE WHOS IN THE INDUSTRY!
I rented this lens for a day to shoot an event, and I was a bit underwhelmed with the performance and image quality compared to the much smaller, cheaper, and lighter Tamron 17-50 mm f 2.8. Plus it is ridiculous to pay for something that expensive and it's only a DX lens. Did not want
2:07 Kai, I hope you guys are aware that a DX (crop-sensor) lens on a FF camera such as the D700 will automatically produce 5 Mega pixel instead of 12 Mega pixels pictures, but as you said later in the video you can change the setting, with its drawbacks of course.
You would had wait / get another D7000 with 16 Mp, and would have been nice to know how the lens performs on that one as well, instead of the D700.
Next interesting video anyone...Nikon D7000 + 17-55mm f/2.8 vs Canon 7d + 17-55mm f/2.8 vs Sony a77 + 16-50mm f/2.8? would be awesome IMO :) I own the sony, and the bokeh is amazing!
@isctony But I think that the Nikon is too expensive about its features. And in the other hand the tamron is too soft at f/2.8 and corners. I supose that finally i'll decide in concordance with my pocket.
@MightyTabooTiki Why would you compare the Nikon to the Canon? It's not like the Canon would work on a Nikon body. I'd rather see it compared to the Tamron and Sigma.
Usually i just watch commentary video's like this and watch porn at the same time, but and just can do with Kai, are can hear him, say "ooh, you dirty little boy... sitting there... watching porn" it's just so wrong... Maybe there is just something wrong with me ! -.-

I've owned this lens for a number of years and it stays on my camera 95% of the time. I have never felt the need for VR, nor would I want the VR if it meant added weight or additional design complexity that might affect image quality.
Often times I wonder if people clamoring for VR simply want it to say that they have it or whether it is truly absolutely essential. For a telephoto lens, I can understand, but for a standard zoom, I think it is pretty optional.
@vluu80 I haven't used the 17-55/2.8, so I cannot comment on that. However, I can say that when I used the 18-55 VR kit lens that came with my D3100, I had use for the VR functionality, when taking indoor vacation shots (architecture, dark bazaars etc). I later bought the 16-85 VR, in which the VR is slightly more effective. It is not just for tele shots, it's for taking 1/10 second shots in general. Just wait for 0.5 - 1 seconds when pressing the shutter, and everything "freezes".
@0debug VR might let you steady a shot at 1/10 seconds, but it won't let you stop motion in your subjects. If you're photographing non-moving objects, e.g. architecture, VR makes sense. But when you're photographing performers in a dimly lit place, there is no substitute for a faster lens and a camera with low noise at high ISO. It's all about using the right tool for the job. For my purposes, VR has very little use. I do however have a use for fast (wide aperture) lenses.
