Actually it cures epilepsy that was otherwise killing these people. They discovered these strange effects after the fact.

there's a reason that technique would not be used today.

@koeber They've altered the procedure though so they cut the anterior end of the Corpus Callosum but leave the posterior end in tact, this means that we don't see the same effects because visual crossover (though not motor cross-over) is retained.
