Strange but true - Revere was not the first to arrive at the Clarke house to warn Hancock and Adams. By the time Revere got there - they had already been warned by someone else that the brits were out. and acutally had a gaurd of 6-8 men etc.
(cont) and sent back for the Salmon - which I do believe was delivered intact to Woburn where Hancock and Adams had first fled too. But I think they also left Woburb before the Salmon was delivered and someone else ended up eating it. Revere had gone back to get a trunk of papers of Hancocks, and walked over the lex green and in-between the minutemen jsut before the firing occurred. REvere heard Parker give his statement about not firing first but if they want a fight let it begin here etc.
some say Adams set up the Lexington Minutemen. One theory is - Adams wanted another Boston Massacre type massacre to rile up the countryside and thus instigated the Minutemen, a very small force, opposing the much larger 800 man Brit force. Of course - they did not REALLY oppose them as they were not in the road. An interesting note is Hancock wanted to join in the military fight and had to be talked out of it. Hancock and Adams were due to have a Salmon diner while at the Clarke house (cont)
Also, there was a relief force of at least one thousand Redcoats, led by British General Hugh, Earl Percy. These 1700 men in total, however, were set upon by the better part of four thousand militia mean and minute companies by the end of the day. The colonists were very lucky that day; they were better prepared than the British, and more willing to fight. They had no idea, however, that the war started here would go on until 1783, and be fought all over the world.
@baezalejandro The british suffered 74 dead. That's all. They had about 200 wounded, missing or taken prisoner. It was abad enough day, but i doubt there were piles of British dead as in this scene. The colonists lost about fifty dead, 45 wounded/missing. If there were large groups of casulaties, it would have been in Menotomy and West Cambridge, in and around houses, on the Bay Road in more thickly settled areas.
@baezalejandro Baz, I'm not sure what you mean, but great well-researched, footnoted works you can rely on would be "Paul Revere's Ride" by David Hackett Fischer, "The Minute Men and Their World", by Robert Gross, "The Whites of Their Eyes" by Paul Lockhart, and John Galvin's "The Minute Men: The First Fight: Myths and Realities of the American Revolution". These books will dispel a lot of notions about this event. The movie- I've since seen it- just perpetuates myths, I'm sorry to say.
@baezalejandro 1) It's not that anyone was waving a flag, it's that no account by anybody who was there, many of which agree in details, mentions flags or pennants, 2) "Undocumented facts" are what they are- no proof. Wishing something were true isn't the same as actually being true. 3) Adams kept extensive diaries. He does mention getting on a horse and going to the battle scene that evening, but mostly he mentions the burned-out houses and refugees still fleeing.
@95thFoot its a flag man a fucking flag. those flags were already in use before then. so whos to say he wouldn't leave out a small detail like that? you're picking at nuts and bolts and ignoring the engine.
@95thFoot They are just showing what happened you moron. Even if he did not go there the show is called John Adams and they wanted to show what happened there so they had him go there. What's the difference whether he went or not. Also, i know you made this comment a year ago but if a soldier ran through an American base, while it was being attacked, with some flag, no one will write that down... they just were showing what probably happened at the battlefield after the battle.

Where did all the trees come from? Eastern Massachusetts was clear-cut farm and cattle land in 1775.
And that flag? Nobody was waving flags that day, not even the British. Flank companies didn't carry flags.
Adams never even came to the Battle Road after the battle.
Another film pandering to beliefs, short on facts.

@95thFoot they chased them all the way to boston... it wasn't just a single battle.. they slaughtered them on the road back to base.

@baezalejandro
What historical sources do you base your opinions on? Just because you wish something to be true, doesn't make it so.

@95thFoot those were more likely new arrivals to the battle who were unaccustomed to how they should fight as of yet.

They even had the kids involved. It has always been the common folks that save the day, not the corrupt elite.
