PARADJANOV'S ART AND VISION IS NOT FOR VIEWERS FROM THE KITCHEN. ITS NOT FOR REDNECKS OR THAT TYPE OF "ART LOVERS" COMPREHENTION OF HIS ART CAN BE ONLY FOUND BUT NOT TOUGHT OR LEARNED FROM SOMEBODY.
The first time i saw a Paradjanov film i started to cry because i never saw something like this... and since that moment (2 years ago) when i work, to write, to edit or "to think", i watch a little of any Paradjanov film...
He managed to direct three more films before he died of cancer in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1990. A house was built for him in Yerevan which was completed shortly after his death, but which now houses all his belongings and has been turned into the Parajanov Museum
Sergei Parajanov or Paradjanov (born Sarkis Paradjanian; 1924-1990) was one of the best known directors of Soviet films. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, to an Armenian family, his work reflected the ethnic diversity of the Caucusus where he was raised. His first major work was Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964), which earned him an international reputation for its rich use of costume and color, and its whimsical portrayal of rural life.
How about the idea that he belongs to all human beings who understand and love and appreciate the creativity of the individual, the spirit of uniqueness, as opposed to following tribal thinking, instead of belonging to some ancient sense of "other than us" because of a land border or a way of understanding a Creator or the way a certain stew is cooked or head-dress displayed. We don't belong to nations. We belong to each other.
rosajan tsavatanem! His greatest movies: Sayat Nova and Suramis Tsihe were made in Georgia, in Georgian churches and castles, with Georgian actors and he wanted to be burried in Tbilisi! He belongs to Georgia and yes he belongs to Armenia too, because of his roots and he for sure does not belong to Ukraine, you know that very well.
Sayat Nova was shot in Sanahin and Haxbat, Armenian monasteries in Armenia. Please don't spread false information.
Surami is a Georgian film, but for which Georgian nationalists treated Parajanov rudely.
On the other hand, Parajanov was the founder and leader of the so called Ukrainian poetic cinema, as he had created the greatest Ukrainian movie ever, "The shadows of the forgotten ancestors". Also he considered Dovjenko as his master, so I think he fully belongs to the Ukraine too.
Parajanov was a genius anyone who knows anything about film should realise this,a one off, magical director & extremely influentual,i wish we had him around today the world needs the creative & majestic cinema of which he was so capable!
P.S. No doubts, many people will not understand his art, or may dislike it, in any case, he was not kind of 'blockbuster' film-maker to ensure mainstream acceptance. And I like him for that too.
I completely disagree with you, Berdjum. For me, Parajanov was one of the most talented, original and creative directors, and yes, great film-maker. I consider him great not because he was Armenian, but because of his work. Take a time, read some books, or browse internet, and you'll see that most people who praised his work and think of him highly are other talented and creative people, mainly non-Armenian.
Paradjanov is a very medium film-maker. The exhibition of his works of Art in Paris was a disaster and only chauvinistic armenians beleive that he is great. It is true that there is not a lot of armenian better film-makers, but it does not mean that because your are one of the best: that you are good.
To spit on him was stupid in 1985, but to try to make him great in 2007, is stupid too.

Parajanov was actually a Georgian of Armenian roots. His will was to be burried in Tbilisi.
He was a genious.

Or maybe an Armenian of Georgian roots? or an Ukrainian of Georgian roots (he has lived and made movies during 20 years in Kiev!)?
Anyway, he actually said: "I'm Armenian until the deepest of myself" (quotation from a French book about Parajanov, by Patrick Cazals, p.142)

Island "Parajanov" -- wonderful title [ I am placing this video on my film-north pages -- see "Russian Cinema" ]. Great documentary footage!
Thanks. Anatoly
