hardly anyone i know has ever heard of bill, because im 26 haha, but i met him at a bluegrass show when i was about 5 years old ( my parents were in a bluegrass group ) and mr bill sat and talked to me, i have a picture of us! doesnt mean much to my friends, but music is a special part of my life and it still means alot to me!!
i grew up on mr Bill's music..I remember our Christmas song there in the east Tennessee mountains was CHRISTMAS TIME A COMMING... seems he had so many great songs and the pickin you could put in there was amazing.
I can't tell you the number of times I would see Bill Monroe at the Ryman Auditorium, and he would get done playing the show there, and head to the Station Inn, cause he wasn't done playing yet...I would always go to the Station after the Ryman, cause I knew he would more than likely be there...
How I loved this number when Bill performed it...my friend Robert Bowlin does a fine job on the fiddle. No one will ever be able to compare to The Father of Bluegrass...He created a musical genre, nurtured it his entire life and left that most marvelous legacy for us to enjoy...Thanks for sharing this wonderful video!
I got to see Bill and the Bluegrass Boys at Poor David's Pub in '90 in Dallas. The Dixis Chicks opened up, in full gingham! When he started to play, he seem to get younger as the night went on! I was 15ft from him.
Ha! Bill Monroe was the father of bluegrass. Hank Williams NOT the father of country music. There were several. Jimmie Rodgers was certainly one. He popularized it certainly. Hank came along in the late 40s, long after country music and Grand Ole Opry began.
Bill Monroe is unquestionably one of the best and most influential country/bluegrass musicians of all time....but Hank Williams was the "Father of Country Music"
I disagree. Jimmy Rogers was born, became a star, and died before Hank Williams was knee high to a grasshopper. I'm pretty sure Hank would agree...don't get me wrong Hank Williams did add a whole new flavor and is a legend in the music, but like I said Rogers had been in country and alot bigger well before Williams.
I love it! Keep pickin up there in Heaven Bill! Not too many good bands out there playing this great trad stuff anymore except The Out of Town Boys and 1946. They both got some good videos y'all ought to check out.
Of my many trips to Mr. Bill's Beanblossom Festival, one in particular stands out. Bill steps up to the mic and says...."Folks, I feel the power and the speed"....and proceeds to tear into "Rawhide".
Just remember, Bill was about 82 years old when he performed this show! I hope I can still feed myself at that age, let alone have the energy that he did. I had the privilege of going to one of his shows in WV in '93. He blew me away. He did the same thing at that show with "Rawhide" that he did here (where he asks the audience "are you ready?") Then he flat out burns it up until the end of the song. It's things like this that make him my favorite artist of all time.
Right on the money sirduff. For my money, Bill that short list of greatest artists in history - for all generations and genres. He was the consummate artist, showman and hard working professional 'till his final days. There will NEVER be another one like him. We owe so much to him.
Wow... I play music with the bass player. We just played tonight. He is all the time telling us stories about this trip!!!

Your right, but Hank is known as the father of Honky Tonk, not country in general.

Let's get our fathers right, people:
Jimmie Rodgers=country
Bill Monroe=bluegrass
Bill was just a teenager when Jimmie and The Carter Family were making the first country recordings and Hank Williams was 4.
