This exercise may be nothing like the real world, but you need to remember that what you're paying the training company to do is to train you to the standard require to pass the test as it currently stands. I'm sure that they would happily give you extra tuition to practice more "real world" stuff, but I'd rather keep the money and learn & earn on the job.
just a add flemingates comment, i took my c-ridged and ce and passed them both first time with TIR and thought the instructor nick was very good and put me at ease and would recommend them to any one
I would not book a training course with TIR as they have lost all the qualified instructors they had. The pass rate has dropped dramatically in the last year and they do not have any DSA registered instructors at all. Would suggest you book somewhere else.
probably the best reversing video on youtube :) no high wind noises.. no crappy music, no mistakes.. good all rounder :) I just booked my Class1.. its in a draw bar tho... wishing i took the tractor unit/trailer company now tho :-/ nvm.. :)
I've driven all over Sub Saharan Africa in artics, but had to redo my test in the UK when I drove there. These test are so easy, it's when you get into the real situations like driving in London or Birmingham that the real test starts! Try backing into some of the small dairies in B'Ham with a double decker on the blind side! Nobody tests you for that.
@Lousypenguin Thanks pal. Sounds like you know how to do it...backwards! Easy on the test....come on London & B'Ham, lets show em how to really back up! Never seen cones on a double yellow or next a bus stop! Where you driving compadre?
@iltidsn I drive a Scania 220 in Dublin Ireland. As you said the test is a piece of piss when compared to driving for a living. The public hate us, the police hate us, road users hate us!! With all these new one way systems and road narrowing my life is a living hell. Reversing a 44t in central dublin during rush hour is an experience you never forget!!
Good reversing!! I passed my hgv test 20 years ago, but few people are aware that you can now take the test at 18 years of age. This fact has not been well advertised though??? Check DVLA website!!
I agree with MsBraunGP I passed three months ago and the reversing exercise was very easy but once you get to the docking bays and small yards with a SMALL ammount of space to move in it's a whole different ball game.
I've ripped two curtains in my own company's yard so far.
I have to say that this "setup" sitution is very easy to do, but out on the real roads with 4 wheeler's ect, pedestrins, docking onto bay's blindside is 100 times harder. pisses me off that they only test you on a "setup" like this where it's easy to master but then when you pass you're test you get onto the "real" roads and reversing onto docks blindside and you think "fuck me"!!
I'm soon to be training class 1 and i would prefer being taken to real loading docks and real situations!!!
The easiest mistake to make is starting to straighten up too soon after going past cone B. On my test I went past cone B at quite a steep angle which allowed me to straighten the trailer up long before I got to the bay. No forward shunts required.
No point in taking a shunt if you don't need to on the test. If you practice enough then the manouver should be simple on test. Also. surely learning with a 45ft trailer on is more beneficial to the learner in gaining a true perspective of driving with a standard trailer on rather than using a 30ft one for test. Adaptation is surely easier when goin from a 45ft to a 30ft and not the opposite way!!!
Shorter trailers are more difficult to control on a reverse as they cut in more quickly.
As for the shunt on the test .... The reverse is the first thing you do, so safe option is not to risk failing before you leave the test centre, as each test costs £300.00 (inc. lorry and instructor).
It's far easier to reverse seeing both cones as opposed to one!!!!
1 minor (ie the shunt), leaves you with 14 minors remaining, if you exceed this you probably need more training anyway!!!!
not sure about the info on the vid, i drive class 1 lorries, with a 30 ft and 45ft trailer and the 30ft trailer is much harder to drive with, it cuts in more on turns and reacts so quickly when reversing, so not sure what point they are trying to prove with using the long trailer?

Don't mind reversing, infact there's not much that bother me. Apart from early starts and icey roads.

I agree, shorter trailers are harder to reverse!
This bloke went straight into the bay ..... If you're about to take your test though .... Don't forget ....... Don't be a c*nt, take a shunt!!
You're allowed 2 shunts, you get 1 minor for this and are allowed 15 in total!!!!!
