  • Wow, she is so subdued compared to her final performance were she almost blew her lungs out, still powerful though, always makes my hair stand on end, every single time.

  • Loretta Devine's skinny ass!!!!! LMAO!!!

  • I'm covered in goosebumps and have tears in my eyes.. this is just so spectacular, I don't even have the words.

  • 7:32

    "sang girl!"

  • Even though the quality is worse, I like this performance better than the one she did for the Tonys. I've seen thousands of Broadway shows, literally, and this was the single best performance I've ever seen. When she holds onto the chair to take two steps across the stage, you honestly feel that she's going to collapse. Thank God Michael Bennett didn't fire her, because he wanted to -- or at least he was very frustrated with her. There were other numbers in the show where she shined. Ths ws best

  • @ThosC747 Yea it seems like the Tony performance was toned down a bit even though it was a great performance.I guess to appeal to a wider audience....this one was raw and uncut..the best hands down!

  • @georgiaboi420 Yes there are some things that were toned down that was only for the broadway show that they could not say on television. Back then when this premiered on the Tony Award, television was was much much more censored than it is now. This was during the time when the word bitch could not be said on t.v. or when a sex scene or nudity was not seen on television. So some things were removed just for t.v. and u got the full blast of it onstage.

  • I think Jennifer Hudson did more than an admirable job but she had the BIGGEST shoes to fill. With all due respect to Ms Hudson, this song will ALWAYS belong to the incredible Jennifer Holiday. I saw this on Broadway and when she did this number, I thought I would jump out of my skin!!! Along with everyone in the audience, we could NOT contain ourselves and I've never seen a more riotous standing ovation before or since ... She is the original Effie and they don't make them like her anymore.

  • Thank you soooooo much for posting this. this gets me every time.

  • It crackles and spurts out sound, but you have posted a huge moment of theatre history and I thank you. I was maybe16 ,heard this and knew i wanted to act in some way.Thank you so much!

  • love. so much. my mother constantly reminds me she got to see jennifer in the original bway cast.... so freaking jealous lol.

  • Thanks so much for sharing that!

  • Hey it's DEE (Sheryl Lee Ralph) from Moesha, lookin' good as Deena... And Effie... my god... I'm a drag queen myself, and every chance I get I perform And I Am Telling You... It's my favorite! She's my favorite! Go Jennifer Holliday! :-)

  • yes!!! thanks to my mother i was exposed to this, she played this music weekly and thank goodness i grew up in the NYC! Jennifer Holiday is the truth...Jennifer Hudson was smart to study this .....

  • singin from her damn gut. Amazing!

  • I've always love Idina Menzel for Wicked, except she destroyed her voice. This woman here is pure gold.

  • @BlazedHearts Check out Lea Salonga in Miss Saigon.

  • I always hated that they cut off such a dramatic ending to such a climax, without giving you a chance to absorb what you just saw n heard. It wasn't necessary to bring the Dreams back out. The first act shoulda just ended with AND I AM TELLIN YOU. After that, you need time to run around the lobby n speak in tongues for a while.

  • @iknowdasright I disagree....I think bringing the Dreams(which is now known as Deena Jones and the Dreams)back out adds more emotion to the song and what just taken place.....it shows them moving forward without Effie, and leaving her all alone in spite of her plea

Its also a great play-on words.....the last line Effie sings is "love me"......and the name of the song The Dreams perform is "Love,Love Me Baby".....lol

  • @iknowdasright yea i always thought the part at the end when the girls come out is really dumb...

  • CHILLS CHILLS CHILLS ! 11***********

  • Oh my God that sob at 9:03!

  • Tk God I had the oppor2nity 2 c the original play while I wuz stationed n NY! There'z no per4mance dat will eva surpazz thiz flawlezz, heartfelt per4mance. I believe there r many who had, have & will relate on a personal lvl. Jennifet ur greatezt contribution 2 the artz eva!

  • DIOS MIO.....INCREIBLE...NO TENGO PALABRAS...

  • amazing and gave me chills!!

  • amazing..

  • I have goosebumps and my hair is standing up. so amazing.

  • Gives me goosebumps on so many levels..so hard to explain..

  • I wish someone would post some stuff of Fantasia in The Color Purple. PLEASE!

  • this is one of the altime greatest peformances on broadway ..it is legendary!

  • One of the most painful things about this scene, is that Effie is not just singing for herself- but for the baby inside her, too! Damn that Curtis!

  • no one ever sang as well as jennifer holliday, ever. ever ever

  • give it up man!!!

  • OMG!!! This is such a Jem! Thanx 4 posting

  • I just saw the new production at the Ahmanson Theater in LA last Sunday and I must say, the original version of this scene still gives me the chills. Moya Angela held her own singing this song but no one can compare to Ms. Holliday! The new production is a must see! The set is amazing, the costumes are incredible and its definitely better than the movie!

  • too bad this was before i was born =(. i would've loved to have been able to see it live.

  • jennifer holliday made this play. if she wasn't in it, no one would care about it today.

  • Nobody does it better than Holliday. Nobody.

  • My God.

  • Dreamgirls is now touring and they since the movie came out they have invested alot of money into it much more than the original one and they added some of the songs from the movie into it...

Put in the search bar Dreamgirls apollo and there is an website too....

  • 7:32..."sang girl"... I love it!!!

  • @Demismyname Lmao thats to much lol

  • So there's two musicals in the world witch original productions i'd die to see

    Funny Girl and Dreamgirls

  • absolutley agree!

  • They wern't allowed to say "bullshit" on the Tony's

  • I loved your description. I am so pained at being so young. If only I could be there... Oh god, I would give a testicle to be there.

  • Yep - this is the REAL history-making experience, including the audience reaction at the theater, online for the first time. Thank you for posting it! One thing I would love to see again, since you seem to have the full show, is the portion where they are touring from city to city. The three are lined up, step backward, lift their arms, and are in different costumes in a split-second on their return step forward. I remember my jaw dropping when I saw it live, and would love to see it again.

  • I saw a later recording with jennifer holliday in this show, before the bells of the beginning of "and I am telling you" and even before jennifer turned around to face the auidence, just when curtis walks off stage, the crowd knows that THE SONG is coming and starts yelling madly like its a pop concert, i act and i think her preformance in dreamgrisl is one of the best theatre preformances of all time, there are others up there with it, but she is truely breathtaking

  • cooooooooooooool

  • This is Musical Theater History right here... I Love this show.... Thanks for posting this

  • I envy to the extreme the person taping this and everyone else in the theater lol. It wouldve been awesome to see this in person.

  • Thank you for posting....Amazing

  • Wow! No more words have to be said and theOriginalSupreme I couldn't hear Love Love me Baby as well She's just amazing

  • i love how the audienced clapped through all of the "love love me baby love love me child..." part hahaha

  • That was too fierce! They should have professionally video tapped the musical but nobody would've guessed (at that time) at how big the home video market would become.

Thanks for keeping the showdown right before And I'm Telling You, that was great!

  • Couldn't even hear "Love Love Me Baby", that's says it all.

  • Wow...I wish I had been alive back then...

  • Comment removed

  • When I was younger and watched apollo I always wondered why people sang this song. I had no idea what it was. When I saw the play re-enacted in college the lightbulb went off. Now I've sen the original. Thanks for posting.

  • didn't know there were small video cameras back then! ..lol

  • I wish I could give her more than 5 stars! There aren;t enough stars in the sky to match this song!

  • God damn, I have some crazy goosebumps. That woman is incredible, beyond words. A once in a lifetime talent.

Also, all I could think about was being the guy who played Curtis, when she had to hug him and sing ridiculously loud in his ear. That must have quite an experience.

  • i think i just died and came back...breathtaking greatness.

  • If anyone gets rid of this video... Its like taking away a bit of history.

I know its ilegal to video... however ... With out people videoing ilegaly you can lose some of the best historical moments of the stage. Such as this.

If youtube takes this of.. they may as well be sinners!

  • A Goddess

  • YEs. This is amazing. She is amazing. She created "Effie". And she performed it on a Bway schedule....

One of the most astounding feats in Bway history.

Without Jennifer holiday, there really would be no Dreamgirls as we know it.

With all due respect-- and I do offer respect and love to Ms. Hudson-- Jennifer Holiday created the mold that everyone else has aspired to fill.

    THank you, Ms. Holiday...!

    God bless you!

  • And- please, don't take this as a bad joke!- that's a pretty big mould to fill.

I only ask that of you, because- even though I said big, on account of how powerful her performance and personality are; I realise that there will be some people out there who, if I hadn't; probably would have thought I was making a tasteless, hurtful joke at Miss Holliday's expense. (I would never do that!)

  • it's so wonderful that we can actually watch this as it happened in the theatre all of those years ago and hear the audience and feel the energy instead of just seeing it redone on television or some such. what a blessing. thank you interweb!!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting these amazing videos...I've been looking for footage for years. I never got to see the original cast and oh....how I wish I could have!

  • Jimmy said "you think a star is a king, but wake up baby, a star is a slave." Get the OBC CD and look at the lyrics.

  • can you believe this woman sung like this every night i'm awe struck i love it

  • I had the honor of meeting the OB cast members while the show was in workshop.Debbie Burrell, who player Michelle, was a friend at the time. Awesome nice people!

  • and Billy's voice is so plain

  • Did anyone notice how many times they moved the make up bag on the table...lol

  • she kind of shouts her high notes.

  • And with the tears rolling outta my eyes i say Thankya Thankya Thankya Ms Holliday. Thankya. Don't she LIVE that song! Thankya Ms Holliday.

  • Alot smaller than the Tony's. Amazing. Thanks. xxx

  • The single greatest performance ever to have graced a broadway stage - regardless of colour . It is the most REAL performance with an earth shattering vocal which has not been repeated on the great white way in my opinion , Ms Holliday along with this amazing cast and creative team poured out their souls onto this stage in the most believable performances ever portrayed on a stage ...Incredible ...And this song !! Best Live vocal ever recorded of any type of entertainment...THANK YOU JENNIFER

  • why the racist crap.

    talent crosses all boundareies.

    and she oosez it.magnificent.:)

  • BITCH BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE!

  • Great cast of players! One thing is how some people have commented on facial expressions made by Jennifer Holliday performing her song.

Her face has to be over the top and exaggerated for people in a theater to see it.

Looking at this video is like from a normal persons view who's not up close to her face.

Besides emotion it's a habit she would obviously keep from staring on Broadway in her early career.

  • That's (THE QUEEN OF BLACK BROADWAY) at her best in her golden momment!!!!

  • why can't she be just one of queens of broadway period. why does it have to be black broadway?

  • i said that she was the queen of black Broadway. because Broadway is mostly white people and black theater is very different.holliday stard in two of the most shows where she wasen't playing a house keeper or a slave she was playing in your arms too short to box with god and her famous role of(EFFIE)that she tood up fof that's why she is (THE QUEEN OF BLACK BROADWAY)

  • ...true that....but why limit her to only black? in Ms. Holliday's case she truley is the queen of Broadway(blk/ wht/yellow/orange......)

  • i'm glad someone agrees with me...you beat me to the punch..lol

  • exactly what i am saying with summerholliday...i ssee what you are saying but i feel that she is one of the greatest of all time. who cares what color she is...she is just one of the greats that made Broadway what it is today...period.

  • why would you limit that to Black Broadway ?

  • She is the queen of Broadway period.

Don't try to limit her and her accomplishments by saying that she is only the queen of "Black" Broadway.

  • Are y'all still on that old bull sh** look i said i was sorry.that should be good.the sh** is old how many months was that GET OVER IT

  • Well, I'm just seeing your ignorant, stupid comment now.

  • well get the hell over it now since you just now seein it and please DO NOT REPLY TO ME ANY MORE

  • Deal with it!

  • he says wake up baby your story`s the same

  • When was this recorded

  • its really different in the 2006 version - jimmy early is not even in the scene

  • i wish i waz alive to see this!! thank u for the footage!

  • What does Jimmy say after 'Wake up baby!"?

  • i'm sorry to slay

  • its acrually wake up baby a stories a spade

  • okay now i kno it ain't that

  • I though it was "a star is a slave"

  • No, its "you think a stories a king? wake up baby a stories a spade!"

  • That doesn't make any sense. It says, "you think a star is a king, wake up baby a star is a slave"....he's trying ti expain to Effie that being a star is not everything she thinks.

  • no! he's reffering to cards, as in effie thinking her plea is of any importance, while in actually it is irrelavant like a spade in a card game, i think i know way more than you, i have the OBC video and the tour also 2 different audios from different performances!

  • Isn't spade an important part in a card game....but who cares...mines make better sense....the only way I can make sure it says what you said it says is if I had a copy of the OBC(hint*hint*)

  • i'll be uploading it soon, say your prayers!

  • Well,I was asking for you to sell it,but I would love for you to upload it for free...lol

  • I am selling it but not for high high prices like some people on the internet.I am gonna upload some scenes for all the fans. I am a die hard fan myself and i know how it feels to want to see the OBC video so bad! I'll message you the prices

  • Cool

  • Post 'em all, baby. POST THEM ALL!!!!!!!

  • You're correct Jimmy says "a star is a slave". As in as a performer you are under the control of the studio, manager, etc....

The clearest recording of "It's All Over" is on the 2001 Dreamgirls In Concert CD. Billy Porter plays Jimmy and it's very clear that he says slave.

  • THANK YOU!!!! I thought it made better sense..

  • Jimmy says: "Wake up baby, a star is a slave."

  • it sho is but on another dreamgirls vid, it was a school production, and i believe its still on here if you want to check it out, but they said wake up baby i'm sorry to slay

  • well its obvious to me that slave was changed in a school production for social correction people can be easily offended but the original word is slave

  • i know that now thankx

  • a stories a spade

  • he says wake up baby, a star is a spell

  • he says wake up baby, a star is a slave.

  • Hey, thank you so much, this footage is amazing, you have made a Dreamgirls fan dreams come true, i've loved dreamgirls for 2 years now, thank you soooooo much. Can you upload more?

  • I love the fact that the audience is in such an uproar over Jennifer's performance you cannot hear the other girls when they come out. Work Jennifer Holiday!!!!

  • My God, I wish I was alive and old enough to witness the OBC of Dreamgirls. I'm envious of you, Greg, that you had the privilege to see a performance by Ms. Holliday.

  • i luv this! and i luv the movie!

  • I CAN DIE NOW.

  • AMAZING!!!!!

  • What did Effie say to Jimmy? He sounded like who?

  • Perry Como

  • I didn't understand when Jen said the name 'COMO'.

  • she said he sounded like Perry Como (a popular singer of that time, but known for his laidback/whitebread style.....)

  • wow, thanks so much,.. this is awesome footage.. i love youtube! man this is great! thanks again!

  • please post more! i dont even care which ones they are since every second of Dreamgirls is phenomenal espescially with Jennifer Holliday!

  • Wow you cant even hear the audio at the end everyone is clapping so loud.

  • increadiable so great to be alive !!!!

  • I can't thank you enough for uploading this. This is phenomenal. Thank you for allowing people who missed out on it witness the next best thing to a live performance. This is historic and it's phenomenal.

  • Your welcome......that's why i put it out. I know what the show(jennifer) did for me~

  • that last breath she takes befor the last me in and i am telling you is so heartbreaking!!!

  • ...OH...MY...GOD!!!!! NEVER HAVE I EVER BEEN SO MOVED BY A PERFORMANCE!!! I ALWAYS KNEW JENNIFER HOLLIDAY WAS AMAZING ESPECIALLY WITH TOTALLY OWNING THIS SONG...BUT REALLY, I STARTED CRYING AT 7:50...GOOSEBUMPS ALL OVER...i mean, my ex just broke up with me yesterday and feel the exact same pain effie did, so i guess i can relate more now than ever, but still...wow...this is definitley going on my iPod!!

  • wat about the 3 cadillac cars post them

shyle i can't wait to see that

  • please post more videos. i know people are hungry for more. I know a lot of people want you to put up the whole musical. I dont know if you want to do that but can you at least upload more scenes please! Like i said before, you are a blessing.

    Thanks Summerholliday44 for posting.

  • sensational

It's okay if the video's not really good but i will ABSOLUTELY appreaciate it and i will very much treasure it like my life. PS., T.Y. for posting these amazing clips for HUGE & DIEHARD fans like me! i appreciate it VERY MUCH!

  • Well, thank goodness that there is a tape of this somewhere and that it is being shared! I saw Jennifer as Effie in Dreamgirls (for the last time she says!!!!???) last summer in Atlanta. Truly, there is nothing that compares to hearing her sing this song IN CHARACTER as she really sings it differently than as a stand-alone song! She received 6 standing ovations before the song was even finished! What a blessing to see it in person!

  • Loretta could really belt with the best of them! So weird to hear her sing.

  • damn i cried again. i wish i was born in 1962 lol i would have been old enough to go see it

  • summerholliday44, do you have the finale when Effie reunites with the Dreams at the end?

  • This is great! This is the original from the actual show (not the Tony Awards).

  • I just don't have the words to repsond to this right now. Let me gather my thoughts, and I will get back with you.

  • Breathe,honey.....breathe! (smile....)

  • Such power. Such emotion. Such pure and utter talent.
