But under those conditions, when it is unknown if the suspect is becoming unstable or not, it is best to keep yourself safe and wait for backup. That's just what he did.

Gosh, police are the only people who have difficult jobs. The constructive outcome is for this person to be charged with the crimes *he* committed. This person could not control himself. He is probably guility of, at least, assault and battery under state law and almost certainly guilty of depriving Gates of a federal right. You really have to wonder about the sanity of his supporters--many of whom carry guns. Gates also got death threats--there's some good cops.

I know, with out a doubt, that in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana it is against the law to stand on your porch or anywhere for that matter and yell profanities. All this does not matter because it is normal, not in a potential combat situation. The situation was dealt with as a robbery, not the bellow. When the situation as deduced that it was not a robbery, the officer began to leave. When he was cursed at and called a racist, he called is superiors in to help him deduce the situation.

Why would you show someone your badge while they are becoming disrupting, yelling, and cursing. YOu do not know what will happen next. If he asked nicely, then I suspect he would show it. But under those conditions, when it is unknown if the suspect is becoming unstable or not, it is best to keep yourself safe and wait for backup. That's just what he did.

He didn't break the law though. He identified himself, and he brought in his other cops before he even brought him out. The cop is not bad. In fact, a new picture even shows him helping Gates down the stairs, while Obama does nothing.
I would like to think that the two have grown closer due to this. Gates over reacted, and the cop simply did as regulations told him to do, never getting angry or spiteful. He dealed with the situation perfectly, and even after the controversy helps Gates.

And when you continue to make a scene over simply asking a question, even in your own home (depending on the circumstances), then you are still at fault. Gormanmod, you don't really invite people to prove you wrong. You invite them to continue talking to a blank wall...in other words you enjoy arguing for the sake of argument...not for the sake of truth and clarity. You do not see wrong on Crowley part because you have chosen not to. You prefer a lie over the truth and thus...you do not see.

It's easy to tell right from wrong. When your getting cursed at for asking a question you have reasonable suspicion to take someone in. Yes he was suppose to show his badge, but after identifying himself and asking a question, and receiving nothing but insults in return, this is reasonable suspicion to think that he might try something.
When a suspect behaves uncontrollably, it is unwise to let him out of your site, such as to fetch your wallet.

You cannot have such a way under the constitution. Sorry, but that's life. Not every case is the same. A murderer who murders because the person raped them is not necessarily guilty, for example.
There are special circumstances that basic logic should make obvious.
It's called an elastic constitution for a reason.

But that is what YOU say. It is not YOU who decides the fate one who has committed a crime. The penalty of breaking the law is decided by the Judge who decides based on various things.

Wrong...again. There was malcontent. This is EXACTLY why they HAD TO drop the charges against Gates. In their own words, they said that Crowley's arrest was regrettable and unfortunate. Reason? Also, people drop charges all the time. Sometimes until a person calms down, sometimes just to teach a lesson. This isn't some 18 year old who just got his license and sped is first red, so it is until he calmed down.
Dropping charges simply means that there is no reason to charge him anymore. What with the charge essentially being civil disobedience, and he being part of a university, and an old crippled man, dropping charges seems kind of obvious to do.

Dropping charges also does not mean something wrong. Again, a charge is just a charge. It must go to the legal system. Why would a very liberal area charge an old man with such things? Why would you want to have a court case and all the legal mumbo jumble just because he spoke improper and disrespectful.
The legal system has far more important things to attend to than an old man who cursed.

Charges were and are always dropped for valid reasons Gorman. Let's go over this one more time and then if you do not clearly see the wrongs here, I promise that I will leave it be with you.
1. Crowley broke the law by lying under oath when he completed and signed a police report with false statements.
2. Crowley broke the law when he made an arrest when NO LAW was broken.
3. Crowley broke the law when he neglected to read Gates his rights.
This is why they HAD to release Gates.

Sure Crowley felt humiliated in front of others. But it is against the law to create a trumped charge and arrest someone just because they humiliated you in front of others by yelling and cursing. It is not against the law to yell and curse at a policeman while standing on your porch in Cambridge, MA.
This is WHY they HAD to release Gates. They clearly had no grounds to hold him.
Had America not been watching and had Gates been a common black man, one could only wonder...hmmm???

Disorderly conduct is not a trumped-up charge.
The people who live in nice quiet residential areas have rights, too - the right to not be dragged involuntarily into some jerk's game-playing drama queen hissy fit, for instance.
That is why almost all decent neighborhoods have some variation on "It is illegal to disturb the peace".
If ppl wanted to live with screaming and abuse they'd move to *your* neighborhood, since apparently *you* never heard of respecting your neighbors.
