Pointless comment - seems you're the one being the fanboy.

V-TEC is undoubtedly a great piece of engineering because it flows so much air without forced induction. Turbocharging can however actually negate the VTEC system.

Although 12 valve VR6s don't flow well at high RPM, they respond very well to turbocharging. With standard internals, they can easily push 400 BHP with good torque to match. No boosted V-TEC will manage that without serious mods.

@CreditMunch 3.5 v8, 3.2 v6, 2.0 turbo and 2.2 vtec, those are the engines in the cars I own. Which is my least favourite? VTEC. Fanboy I'm not. My comment was based on the margin by which the Honda beat the VW - the extra 29bhp allowed it to gradually pull away like a 'stock' Type R would. A modded one (look on Youtube) would have beaten it by a greater margin.

OK, fair enough to the first part of your response.

Going back to your original comment though, of course a blown V-TEC is going to wipe the floor with a standard VR6. However, on an even playing field (i.e. turbo-charging both engines), the VR6 will reliably yield more power and torque than the V-TEC - the latter would require serious modifications and even then, the sheer lack of displacement (cc) would be detrimental to torque and drivability.

Why are people so hostile about a late 90's Honda beating an early 90's VW? If you look at the performance figures a stock Type R has 29bhp more than even the 2.9 VR6 Golf. The Golf has 23NM more torque which is why it was ahead early on but it didn't have a chance against a Type R in a flat out straight line race as the Type R will be in the VTEC zone the whole time once it reaches it in the original gear they started off in, which is where it all happens with the VTEC's.

They're all Golfs, they are not all Golf Gti's, Rabbits, etc, there are differences, hence the name adaptations. And I know, my brother has a Prelude, and it is a great car, I do not diss all Hondas just because they are Honda. But facts are facts and it takes a turbo and I hope it was just a small one because if not that sounds like Nos, and that would be sad if they were that desperate to win they used Nos... Let's hope it was a little turbo.. for prides sake.

Haha, Vw did not fail, it was stock vs. turbo, what do you expect, hondas stopped making good cars stock after they quit preludes. Also, the honda struggled take off even WITH the turbo. AND it's a golf, not a gti. Golf is the luxury car, while gti is the sporty one. Don't get a boner ricers, you don't see gti's lose often.

As much as love vr6's, this usually happens unless you get bigger cams or are boosted, they always get off the line really quickly, but most hondas have high revving engines, I still wouldn't trade my vr6 for anything else unless its an r32.

@adrianovtec well at 100+ kmh it really makes a difference to have them closed...get two identical cars with identical driver weight and do a rolling start from 80 kmh..one with the window down and the other with it closed...and do it to 160 kmh..you will see the difference...
