The racers missed every gate, but the gates "blew up" as if they'd made every gate. I guess augmented reality is not only infinitely malleable but also infinitely fakeable.

@rekrapmij yeah, it appears they have some kinks to work out with the augmented reality technology, it doesn't appear as if the gate will appear behind the airplane.

I watched the streaming video of the event online, they used the augmented reality with a Cessna and didn't use it for the rocket racers, not sure if they used it for the people attending the event.

This will be very important for aerospace, with a performance envelope(of the engine, not the aircraft) similar to the Bell X-1.
