Wow, I like this huge debate below that unfolds between jenrob and lysel. People have so many different ideas and opinions; I would say you two are not going to agree. I believe that when profit is your first and only motivation, it can be a recipe for abuse. I fully believe that as christians it is our duty to take care of the underprivilaged, however, it is also the duty of all society to do as much for themselves as possible. if you want to put every burden on the government, THEN we tank as a society. The private sector functions at a much greater efficiency because it isn't as monolithic. the quotes you use were done out of a christian ideal, not that of the government.

gold/silver really helped during the great depression didn't it?! it was worthless as well. it doesn't matter what the money is backed by, if it tanks, it tanks. gold/silver precious metals are only as valuable as society deems them. they can't be eaten, and therefore, worthless at that time.

Even if you were able to start everyone at the same place with money/property/whatever there would again soon be a disparage because some people are willing to sacrifice and work hard to get ahead while others won't. that is human nature, like it or not. the "progressive" philosophy would be "rich/successful people just have what they have and it is unfair". my philosophy "You are where you are because of every decision you have made in your life to this point." It presumes too much about other people that may or may not be true. I determine my own destiny through self employment.This is what the discussion is about. We are accountable for our actions in quest of whatever we choose to acquire. Money has no inherent value . It only has what value we assign to it. There is a lot more room for everyone in the boat.

actually no I am not management, I am an independant contractor, who negotiates every thing that I get. I don't depend upon the government or anyone else, I depend upon what I can do for myself.
