A 50p catheter valve emptied at 2-3hr intervals or when the feeling the need to void if able,is a far cheaper, disposable option.Obviously it would be minatureised for the actual market but would many people fancy the idea of having a "RoboCock" TM or "RoboQuim"TM?
@wtbman2 As I use both catheters and diapers,I prefer the cath over the diaper anyday, despite the discomfort you get with a cath you get used to it,diapers cause your skin to break down very quickly if wet for any period of time.No doubt when this unit is manufactured the control unit and the valve will be made far smaller and sleeker and possibly wireless, wouldnt be so bad then. This is just a mock up to demonstrate the system. Its far too big and bulky for daily use!!
I love the fact that I'm moderately incontinent, I love that I get the US Govt. to buy me several cases of "Medline Air Active Briefs" monthly, so comfy-soft and dry, I will never go back to wearing harsh underwear or have irritating catheters stuck in me.
You guys need to expand your horizons on all the adult diaper advancements we have now.
There's so many great new products, once your customers try some brands, they will refuse to wear anything BUT diapers!
@GayWorldOrder All my supplies are supplied by the government.Though my care trust only supplies Tena products.Tena,as with all pads, have a habit of disintegrating and clumping up in the crotch while being worn actively. This means that sometimes I have to change and throw away a clean pad after a few hours. If they could find a way of matting the core so that it didnt fluff up and collapse into the crotch it would be a vast improvement. This is ofcourse not a problem at night or in bed when ill.
@GayWorldOrder I find it hard to believe that you "love" being incontinent. As my problems are caused by illness I find it very distressing. When I use a catheter I am released from the horrors of extreme urgency and frequency,it saves me from being in dashing distance of a toilet all the time, pads don't help with that, they just catch an accident.I also hate the thought of being ridiculed by others for being seen to be wearing a pad.Thank god for the catheter despite occasional infections.
Good idea as it allows the user to maintain bladder tone and volume, which is lost with long term foley use.I can see a night application where the unit allows the bladder to fill to a certain sprecified pressure then to release automaticaly into a night bag,I understand its in early development but a wireless system with a wrist worn watch/controller would certainly improve the product as timing between voids is also important, the ability to record pressures/volume/times would be helpful too.
Um what is the point? The person would still have a catheter inserted, which increases their chance of infection...what about individuals who do not have the mental capacity to know they need to void? Is this a joke?
@kgurl13 I agree. I would love to see this energy put into ways to empty the bladder without a catheter. Until then, this device could reduce use of urine drainage bags and, for some, increase bladder management independence in indwelling catheter wearers.
@krissovich An implantable valve into the abdominal wall with a suprapubic catheter into the bladder is another idea to make obsolete the urethral catheter and their problems, the device could be implanted so that it would never need to be changed,it could be made co-axial,the device implanted and a replaceable SCath going through the middle that can be changed incase of blockage/incrustation etc, being anchored no balloon is needed.Infection could be reduced/iliminated,lots of possibilities.
The alarms are customizable (can select any combination of visual, audible, or vibrate). And there is a safety switch that must be engaged before you can void.
The thigh strap is there since our valve is so bulky but that likely wouldn't be required in future prototype.
ummm human factors engineering anyone? audible alarm that you need to pee? That would be a bit embarassing. Also, a single accidental button bump causes pants wetting?
Still though, interesting and original idea. Kudos for the working prototype too.
Is this for real? or a joke?

Thoughtful response to an increasing and distressing problem. With some more development, l hope to see your device available for patient use.
Thanks to your team for their ingenuity and diligence.
